+drbugs
Ok it was worth a try. I asked about linux support, and here is my reply: At this time, the only OS that is supported is Windows. Coming sometime this Fall 2006, Garmin will begin supporting the Mac OS X, but no Linux has been announced currently. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me! I search portage and I find (filtered results): * app-misc/gpsdrive * sci-geosciences/gpsbabel [ Masked ] * sci-geosciences/gpsd [ Masked ] it's too bad they haven't thought about providing open specs, some base framework (opensourcing an initial version on base software, for example) and letting the community to build up solutions. i'm currently geocaching together with friends that have gps units, and i would getmyself one that had full linux support for all the functionality. unfortunately, i haven't found one. now, as i found here : http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=127780 gpsbabel supposedly should be able to upload loc waypoints. gpsd really is just a daemon to communicate with the unit and is included with gpsdrive (i've tried them myself). gpsdrive works, but is in a heavy development state. i had unexplainable slowdowns, some crashes and some of the things are overhauled in backend but are not reflected in the frontend. nevertheless, developer is very welcoming and helpful - and the application is not abandoned. though it probably still isn't as featureful as most windows applications. moonpup
I am a linux user as well, but have relinquished myself to using an old laptop with windows 2000 to load mapsource. It would be nice if they ported the app over to linux, but your only option is windows or wait until the mac release this fall if you hate microsoft that much Cheers! Quote Link to comment
+drbugs
Tx for all the replys! I'm kinda bummed, I've been using linux as my primary OS for 10 years. I hate dualbooting my laptop, so I may explore using vmware. Still painful though. I've put in a request for linux support, but I'm not gonna hold my breath. moonpup, I figured you for a linux user from the first time I saw your avatar. nice! Randy Quote Link to comment
moonpup
As an FYI I tried using cross over office and it failed miserably. That was on the 4.x version. Not sure if 5.x is any better as I haven't tried it. If you have any luck with vmware, post back with the results. Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
gpsbabel supposedly should be able to upload loc waypoints. GPSBabel is better tested by its main developers on Linux than it is on any other system. Waypoint transfer works very well to a variety of serial and USB models and .loc was one of the very first formats supported. Quote Link to comment
