ZackJones
I'm thinking about having a coin made and I want to make one that sells well since I don't have a ton of money that I want to tie up in this project . With that in mind is there a generally accepted diameter and thickness of a coin? Not that it matters but I'll state this anyway - I'm not trying this to make money, but if I happen to make any money off of it I would donate any extra money to BikeDog's memorial fund. Given options of 1" (25mm) 1.5" (38mm) 1 5/8" (42mm) 1.75" (45mm) 2.0" (50mm) for diameter and options of 2 mm 2.5 mm 3.0 mm 3.5 mm 4.0 mm 4.5 mm for thickness what do you prefer? The cheapest price for a coin would be 1 inch diameter and 2 mm thickness but is that too small or too thin? Edited March 22, 2006 by ZackJones Quote Link to comment

Better Half
I'll be serious on this one.... Some friends were actually talking about the thickness of the coins over the weekend and we all agreed that the thicker coins were preferred. I like the thicker coins. Especially if there is a lot of detail in the coin as far as the 2 and 3 D effects and the depth of the design. Size doesn't matter. I like the micro coins. I guess a 2mm thickness on a 1 inch coin is okay, but as the size of the coin increases, so should the thickness. If you go with a 1.5 inch coin, at least go with the 3mm thickness. I think you will be much happier with it. Looking forward to your design. Quote Link to comment
Rick618
The bigger thicker coins just feel better. Yep, I'll stick with that. They have more heft and those are the ones I like the most. The ones that Crake has produced are at the top of my list. Quote Link to comment

AtlantaGal
I like thicker coins. So 3MM minimum, but if you're doing a 42MM coin or larger go with 3.5MM or 4MM for the thickness. It's worth the extra $. Quote Link to comment
Renegade Knight
3-4mm 1.5 to 1.75 inches are about typical. If it's your coin though it's your choice. Quote Link to comment

pdxmarathonman
Thick is good. 1.75" and SMALLER is good. Unless it's truly Ginormous Quote Link to comment

ZackJones
Thanks for the replies so far. One of the goals I had for the coin was to try and create one that I could sell for $5.00. I don't see that happening, especially if it is going to be trackable which is a must have, IMO. Quote Link to comment
nfa
It's not the size of the coin, it's the passion of your cachin'... I'm about to release 2 geocoins that are 38mm (thick) and about 400mm across, but am also working on some that will only be about the size of a US penny...I love every size of geocoin I've ever seen! Here are a few $5.00 and under: http://www.usageocoins.com/geocoins.htm http://www.genericgeocoin.com/ http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=125804 ADDED: Outside of USA Geocoins, the other two listed are 1" x 2mm 'Micro' Geocoins. And they were both runs of 1000+. maybe others? Edited March 22, 2006 by nielsenc Quote Link to comment
junglehair
I agree with everyone that the thicker coins are better. The thinner coins just end up feeling cheap. Quote Link to comment

dhenninger
$6 is quite possible for a trackable w/icon (if you make 500) $5 is getting harder (unless you don't get an icon, or you make 1,000+) Quote Link to comment
