Cars And Caching

Recommended Posts

If anyone wants to drive a large, thirsty 4 x 4 with a clear conscience then get in touch with the low impact living initiative on the web and they will teach you how to make biodiesel from the waste fat from your local chippy or teach you how to convert your car so it will run safely on pure veg. oil. They will also supply you with ready made bio diesel but this is more expensive than regularv diesel, but hey, what price the planet?

Two good looking caching mobiles you have there Dakar....

Heres our caching mobile...

oooooo me like very much!!!!

I bet that set you back a bit :anibad:

Now thats what you call a cachemobile!!!!!!

I owned a Disco for a while before caching but fuel costs too high and always breaking down so i traded it for a smaller one (freelander) and that was no better!

I wait with abaited breath, but Hey! I am not going to be forced by anyone into a communist society. ( I have my cars because of freedom of ownership, not to be forced to be "Mrs" same as everyone else!)

Next they will be insiting that all cars are to be painted green! forgetting the implications of paint thinners on the enviroment. At least Rust is a natural colour and older cars have that! FREE!

I am still saving up for one of these :)

Taken at the local quarry on a 4x4 day

I will be driving around the Wirrel on Saturday in my People carrier 1.9TDi , Its served me well over the past 2 years, it does a good 40-50 MPG on a run out and only has a few minor battle scar’s ;)

Do you watch Petrolheads?

Nope... What is that? sounds a bit sky tv to me?

How do you know the model ? :D

Very sad to say that I saw the air intake for the snorkel is on the drivers side, so is a 300 Tdi.

Petrolheads is to cars as 'Never Mind the Buzzcocks ' is to music. Sunday BBC2 10 PM after TopGear.

You are the Richard Hammond of Geocaching, but probably taller :)

Respect :)

Range Rovers are my specialist subject, although I can tell a Landie what it is by looking it at the rear!

Now that is sad! Me a 48 years 11.5 months old woman at that!

Mayby this thread should be renamed 'Name that 4X4' or 'Opinions on your 4x4 cachemobil' ;)

.....The mud inside my car is very embarrassing I hate offering lifts at the moment.

Ditto!!! ;)

Only damage to my car was ruining the exhaust on a large rock that had been knocked off a dry-stone wall. (Oh and lots of little scratches from hedges! :) )

I'm eventually going to get a big meaty 4x4, no worries about muddy tracks then ;)

No worries about muddy tracks but Mr Brown will take a nice big chunk of car tax off you!! :)

Editted to say...should have read the rest of the thread before posting...this point seems to have been covered :)

Not sure why people want to drive off road for caching. Most of the enjoyment for me is the walk and getting away from vehicles!

Ours too. Most of our cache finds are one waypoint incorporated into a circular walk. I don't favour our growing disposition towards the American way - using the car to get as close as possible to every destination.

Not sure why people want to stay on or near the ground, either on foot or in a vehicle, for caching. Most of the enjoyment for me is flying around and landing near one!

Ask a woman what car she's got and she'll say 'A red one' :D

Wrong! I don't own a red one, I do have 2 blue ones and a Beige on though!

AND they are all Range Rovers, AND we will only be paying an increase on car tax of £5 a year per vehicle now the Budget has been announced.

YippEE!!!

terrible when you need to have all three cars the same as you can't identify more than one type!!!

all of them are steel umbrellas with wheels. never understood why people got so upset when they dented them in accidents. any accident you walk away from is a good one.

You should try MartyBartfast's Bistromath drive - it's a wonderful new method of crossing vast

interstellar distances without all that dangerous mucking about with Improbability Factors.

And the SEP field means that you can park near caches without getting spotted by muggles

My reply, not technicaly true about Range Rovers!

The body work, except from a few panels is made of a metal called Birmabright, its a alloy, so does not rust, just dent!

OK, the under part is steel, but is designed to last for decades. like Dakar 4x4 said, when the Range Rovers body is beyond repair, remove it and replace it with a fibreglass body kit!

Just think, how many Range Rovers older than a "M" plate do you see on the road? Thousands! Of course M plate was the last year of manufactor for the Classic shape, so they are all over 11 years old. I regularly drive a 1969 Velar (Range Rover prototype) thats still original and is 37 years old! How many Mondeo's will last that long? The Velar still gets used a s an everyday vehicle, its been just under 3 times round the clock, and still has its original clutch! I have seen it work by towing trailers with land rovers on them, through to haveing a lawn mower attachment put on the back to mow the meadows. Could a Smart car last and do that?

I couldn't agree more, in the past my family and I have had a few bumps (none our fault) and one write off (this was my fault, if your going to do it do it in style :tired: ). On every occassion the most important thing to me was that everyone was ok, including those in the other vehicle. Nothing more important than a persons health. The car is just a chunk of metal that can be replaced.

But I love my cars!

I talk to them and take them out for drivies, like a dog goes out for walkies! I would be gutted if my steads were hurt in anyway!

I have a good surgen that keeps them healthy and gives them body lifts! No! I would be very upset if I lost one due to a careless driver.

No! I would be very upset if I lost one due to a careless driver.

Depending on how upset you get, depends on whether there are more injuries at the scene??

Also we can all be careless at some time (I have), that wee mini driver, motorcyclist or cyclist may be pleased that they are still alive by being hit by a Landy?

we have been caching for nearly a year now and looking back over that year we have written off one ford mondeo wrecked a ford fiesta so badly we had to scrap it michelles pride and joy was a nice ford escort we have smashed the front bumper driven 1000`s of miles down muddy tracks and little country lanes all in the name of caching are we the only ones or are there more people out there who have done the same or worse

Not sure how long the other cars will last now as teaching the eldest child how to drive!!!!!!! This would be the Sammy jo part of the Cantor clan....

Not sure if you know or not, but being hit by a 4x4 rather than a car can have advantages,

Firstly, although the car may be higher at the body line, so is the undercarriage of the vehicle. This means that the clearance is greater, so can actually drive over the top of a person or child, instead of crushing them under a cars wheels.

Secondly, OK, someone may hit the front and then colapse on the bonnet, but the chances of smashing your head on the windscreen, or being bounced off the bonnet and thrown to the ground behind the vehicle is very rare!

Anyway, if everyone drove to the high way code and speed limits, then driving accident or should I say road traffic collisions would not happen, not unless the driver of the offending vehilce was acting or driving irresposible. As for people walking or running / cycling in front of the vehicles, that is just irresponsible of the walker etc, not of the driver. Sureley a road is clearly marked, so care should be taken by the walker etc, not just the car driver.

It is a fact that everyone has the duty of care to drive and behave responsibly on the roads. No one particular group is anymore careless than another. Its just a fact accidents do happen and to all users regardless.

Me! I blame the irresponsible!

Link to comment

yeah but my only point was i used to turn up to accidents and people would be hysterical becasue their pride and joy had been dented or written off.

they had little or no injuries and the other persons involved likewise. full insurance etc. so what the heck is the problem?

car insurance has that advantage over life insurance, you get to enjoy the first!

who cares if a cars been written off no matter how rare expensive or special the dadgum thing is?

accidents can only happen when we make a mistake....... and we all make mistakes sooner or later

relax and enjoy.

One point with BVs, as they're called is that you need an H classification on your driving licence for tracked vechicles. But if anyone wants to buy one and needs a chauffeur, I have an H courtesy of HM Forces.

I have driven one of these beauties and they will go just about anywhere, up and down what feels like 45* slopes, bogs, sand, snow, even tarmac. I have been told as long as you make sure the bung is in the hull base they will swim. The beauty is that they're automatic and drive just like a car. In fact they have a volve engine.

Much easier to drive than what I learnt on...

http://www.militaryvehicles.com/vehicle_150.shtml

Just 8mpg but it does have a 90 gallon tank

Now that will go almost anywhere, even over Ford Escorts. I know from experience!

LOL there is a FV 432 Mk 2 going for £4,500

BareClawz what do you think of the GKN Saxon? My m8 has one being delivered next week.

Or if that does not float your boat you could just go for the Vogue 3.9 Armoured Range Rover, thats only £12,500 and its white.

Link to comment

You need a commander (friend poking their head out the top) to watch out for you whilst driving a Saxon. The windows are extremely narrow, and you cannot see any traffic down to the side. If you need a volunteer I am willing to come along, used the Saxon many times, and just like Bear Claws thanks to the military I can drive your BV for you and the 432.

Did you know that a 432 doesn't have a footbrake, you brake using the steering tillers. I forgot this the first time I drove one, and crashed it into the hangar door. :)
