icefall5 Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 (edited) What will happen if I try to go through airport security with my GPSr? Will I have any problems? Edited March 17, 2006 by icefall5
Jennifer&Dean Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 I haven't had any problems in 3 years of traveling with a Garmin Legend in my purse. Have a fun trip! -Jen
Polar B's Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 (edited) I can't imagine there would be any more of a problem with a GPS than a PDA, computer, or digital camera. All of which I regularly take as carry on. Edited March 17, 2006 by Polar B's
DavidMac Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Most likely not. I've never had a problem and have never heard of any incidents involving security and GPS equipment. Many airlines even allow the use of GPS receivers in flight (above 10,000 feet). To baggage screeners, the GPS stowed in your bag looks like any other handheld electronic device (phone, blackberry, etc) and shouldn't raise any red flags.
TotemLake Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 At the very least, you might need to prove that it works. They might want to see you turn it on. I've had that happen on a couple of occasions with my laptop.
gpstrekkers Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Ditto the above responses. Flew down to Orlando two weeks ago on Continental. Went thru security with two gps's. I asked the flight attendants if I could use them during the flight. I was called a gadget geek on the flight down. On the flight back, the one attendant was a gadget geek. He asked if they showed speed and altitude. He loved the display on the the 60cs.
wimseyguy Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 In 3.5 years of traveling with it I've never been questioned about it at security, or on board the plane. It's fun to see what you actually are flying over. Most airlines even mention them in the fine print of allowed electronic devices in the inflite magazines. In fact carrying on a bag with cell phone, GPS, laptop, digital camera, extra batteries, power cords and converters, the only time I was ever stopped was when I had a golf divot tool in the bag as well. They thought it was a sharp pointed weapon, until I grabbed it from his hand and demo'ed the fact that it could not even puncture my palm, only bruise it.
LostPuppy Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 I've flown with mine several times with no problems. It's just another electronic device, not like a taser or something dangerous...
Big Sky Explorers Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Flown a lot and used mine on many filghts. All were Northwest who allow GPS devices to be used on the aircraft. Got to have a window seat for them to work though. PS. I would carry the GPS only on the carry on baggage. If you check it through, it might not make the flight! It might be taken and never seen again......
brodiebunch Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 I don't travel that regularly, but I pack it in my carry-on and have never had a problem.
Team Tired Boy Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 I fly all the time and almost always have my GPSr in my laptop bag. No security person has ever raised an eyebrow anywhere in the US, France, Germany, Italy, or the UK. It's a non-issue.
icefall5 Posted March 18, 2006 Author Posted March 18, 2006 Ok. Thanks for all the advice. And to save the mods all the trouble ...
