Ripley's Believe It Or Not

Recommended Posts

If anyone cares, I have the distinction of having disproven a Ripleyism.  I even have a letter to that effect, somewhere, from a representative of the organization.

There was a poster in the Ripley museum in Hollywood that had what was claimed to be an unsolvable math puzzle.  I guess math wasn't one of Robert Ripley's strengths.

The puzzle went something like this:

A man drives his car at a speed of 40 MPH.  He then turns around, and drives back over the same route, the same distance, at a speed of 30 MPH.  What is his average speed for the entire trip?

  The answer is 34 + 2/7 MPH.
