Night Caching?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I just tried a cache at night, and found it to be VERY interesting! I live in the NY area and very close to the Hudson River. I checked my Palm, and sure enough there was a cache right on(or overlooking actually  ) the Hudson River. I soon set off with my dog Sparky and my sister, and did the cache as we normally do, but then found that people actually visited it at night. We decided that we would give this a shot later that day, since we had already been to the cache and knew the terrain, there was a less chance for injury. We'll sure enough, we arrived at the cache without a problem, amongst the chatter of deer, owls and the occaisonal cricket. We arrived at a small cliff that jutted out over the river and took in a breath taking view of the moonlight Hudson River. I hope that every avid cacher has tried this, and I encourage them to do so.(With the proper saftey precautions of course

Night caching is fun. Just make sure you do not violate any park regulations by being there after sunset, or between certain hours.

And if by chance you do, please, please don't brag about it in your log. It doesn't look good for us if a park official checks the logs for a park that closes at sunset and sees "Snuck past the closed gate and found this at 1 am".

I've found at least a third of my caches at night. Is is interesting, in the woods or urban areas. Most regular (daytime) caches make great night caches.

My favorite night caching experiences typically involve a moderate hike in the woods and some bushwacking. In most places, while caching at night, it is best to use ambient light as much as possible to avoid night blindness if you have retinal issues.:blink:

I, too, have found a few caches at night, but I'd like to remind everyone to be ready to explain what you are doing to the police! Let's face it, you are already acting suspicious---looking warily around to see if anyone is looking, crawling under the bench, crawling into the shrubbery, etc. Muggles might sometimes think you are up to no good, and having a papertrail of the cache location or other geocache paraphenalia handy might keep you from a night in jail for suspicious behavior :anibad: Believe me, I was in this situation just last Saturday night! (By the way, we were on a public sidewalk near a strip mall!)

Took the words right out of my mouth! Though my preference would be for not doing it at all, not just not talking about it.

I've done a couple caches at night, but only because night fell as I was looking for them. Unfortunately, most of the forest preserves and parks around close at sunset, and we've already gotten one parking ticket. This annoys me, but there's nothing you can do about it.

I've found that using a mini flashlight tucked inside a hat is a perfect combination. You see your surroundings much better without a powerful flashlight, but the small amount of light does a great job at lighting up branches just before they hit you in the face.
