Wrath9 Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 I went to a event last night and this other cacher ask me now long have I been playing the game???I thought it was a hobby..along with other hobbies....cv Quote
+VO2WW Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Hmmmmm, I would say it is first and foremost it is an activity, one which can be a game. As a game or an activity it can be, and often is, a hobby. In my opinion I don't think it could be considered a sport but yes it can become an obsession, often do. Quote
+wizard1974uk Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 I think geocaching can be what ever you want it to be, I see it as a hobby, even though I am taking it seriously. Quote
+Frodo13 Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Obsession also works here. As everybody has already said or at least thought a hobby does not always require a time clock, a score, other players, a referee, uniforms, special equipment, training, etc. Oh wait, what side of the argument was I on? OK, a sport requires some competition, colorful fans, corporate sponsorship, steriods, explotation of child labor to produce high priced shoes.... darn, I can't seem to get it all together. OK, I can at least say Geocaching is more fun than watching Olympic curling replays on TEVO. Quote
+briansnat Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Main Entry: sport Function: noun 1 a : a source of diversion : RECREATION (1) : physical activity engaged in for pleasure Main Entry: hobby Function: noun 1: a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation Looks like its both to me! +AuntieWeasel Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 When this topic comes up, I always vote "sport" -- because there has to be ONE sport in my life I didn't totally suck at. Please? Pleeeeeease??? Quote
+Jimblonduk Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Main Entry: hobbyFunction: noun 1: a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation Relaxation ????? .... I just dont think so. Up mountain, down dale, thru the brush and in all kinds of hideous weather...... Definitley NOT relaxing But totally fun and obsessive Quote
bogleman Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Ask a FTF hound if it is a hobby or a SPORT. I go with sport myself, I have ventured after a few that were well beyone the hobby aspect of caching. Quote
+HaLiJuSaPa Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Wikipedia defines it as an outdoor "activity"; Geocaching Actually, they initially had the whole "sport" vs. "game" vs. "hobby" debate in the entry, but then simply called it an "activity". Personally I think it is a cross between a game and a hobby. More a hobby, the main reason I barely consider it a game and not really a sport is that there's no good competitive measurement, for most of the measurements, skill is either based on one's time/ability to do more/many or based on a subjective rating. +BlueDeuce Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 (edited) I called it a sport once and my wife gave me one of those looks and asked if it was in the Olympics. So now I just call it a pastime. Edited February 26, 2006 by BlueDeuce Quote

+atascadero Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 I think geocaching can be what ever you want it to be I agree. I kinda dislike labels but understand they serve a purpose for some. If pressed, I'd say a fun outdoor activity with aspects of sport and game depending on how you decide to approach it. In the end, for me, to answer the question. What is geocaching to you? I'd answer, enjoyable! Quote
+humanloofa Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Golf is called a sport but I get more exercise caching. If you live by the numbers alone than it could be a sport. If you go by just having fun and enjoying it than it is a hobby. I think I'll just call it and obssesive activity and leave it there. Quote
+Foothills Drifter Posted February 26, 2006 Author Posted February 26, 2006 Howdy...... Thankx for all your replys (sofar...) I really enjoy this 'outdoor activity', it's a nice 'hobby' and if I don't get too 'obsessed' with it my wife will be a good 'sport' about it. It's a 'past time' that can be relaxing (if ya find what you're lookin for...) Oh well.....you get the point Vern... Quote

SPKr Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Geocaching can't be a sport, there's no ball (or puck, for you northerners) involved. Well, unless you find a ball in one, then there is a ball involved. I just call it fun, a heckuva way to spend an afternoon (or a whole day for that matter). Scott Quote
