+qichina Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 (edited) Release em, no good at home eh? I put another 2 out today. I guess most people collect, seeing as I hardly ever see pretty icons listed next to caches when I search :-( I agree - there are 1000s of geocoins owned by UK cachers, but probably less than 1% of caches list them as being there to find. Maybe the reason people don't want to let them out of their sight is that there some geocachers out there who like to 'collect' (ie steal) other people's coins. I'm gathering a whole set of coins with interesting icons which I will both keep at home, and release in the spring. What I'm doing is making a replica (metal disc + photo) coin held together in a laminated folder. That way people get to pick up a physical travel bug/coin, log the find and move it on for others to enjoy. No-one in their right mind would want to keep a replica, but if it does go missing, all I have to do is make another replica and re-release. You wouldn't keep an activated travel bug at home (would you?), so it seems a shame that people feel they have to keep geocoins at home, and at best, email out the tracking code to people who've never even seen the coin! +little-miss-naughty Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 i agree i must admitt the coins are very nice but the felling of finding one is evan better. its a shame to find a vritual coin as there is nothing as such to pick up. andys101 an redfrock came up with a good idea with their coins an they attatched a goal by drilling a small hole in the coin therefore making it worhtless to collectors. No-one in their right mind would want to keep a replica, but if it does go missing, all I have to do is make another replica and re-release. I bought a load of clear keyrings off ebay. For each coin I print out a mission statement and the tracking number of the coin in a decent sized font (lets face it, some of them are very hard to read from the coins) and put this inside the keyring. Then I drill a couple of holes in the coin, attach the keyring through one of them and let it go free. I figure a couple of holes makes the coin far less collectable and they keyring ensures people realise its a traveller, not a trade item. I know some people release replicas but I would be a bit gutted to go to a cache expecting to find a coin, and then not to find it. Coins are all very different in feel as well as design, you can't beat the real deal IMHO. If they go missing then so be it, its not the end of the world. The logs people post on the coins I have set loose in the wild are often quite rewarding, cachers seem to be very pleased to have found a real geocoin in a real cache. +scaw Posted February 25, 2006 Author Posted February 25, 2006 i drill holes in mine and attatch a laminate to them Quote
+The Mars Bars Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 I now own:- 3 x EU coins 2 x UK coins 3 x EEG coins (1 gold, 2 silver) I have so far released:- 1 x EU coin 1 x UK coin I intend to release at least another:- 1 x EU coin 2 x EEG coins So that will be 5 in the wild and three to keep in cotton wool at home. Theyre nice to keep but I agree more need to be set free to do what they're supposed to do!!!! I have encased the 2 that I have set free in a block of clear resin 60mm dia x 15mm thick. Cheers Dave Quote
+The Golem Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 i drill holes in mine and attatch a laminate to them What's happened to your EU coin that I left in "Light at the end of the tunnel"? - Have you had any news about it? Quote

The people who were there after you got one of my tb's from a near by cache so i am hoping they have got it and just not logged it yet as they have had the bug for nearly 2 months as well so fingers crossed Quote

That is if I like a coin enough to buy one I try and buy two, one to keep (un activated in case I decide to pass it on later) and one to set free. Therefore I will be releasing a UK, Scotland & Wales coin soon (missed out on getting an English one). However, I'm not sure if I can bring myself to drill a hole in them before letting them go. Andys101 & Redfrock Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 (edited) However, I'm not sure if I can bring myself to drill a hole in them before letting them go. It's not so bad - we don't go to the extremes of Crptic S C , we just do a small hole on the outer edge just big enought to put a key ring through it and then attach the laminated card - this way, as Naughty says, they are not collectable and also obvious in a pretty full cache, rather than possibly sinking to the bottom. Saying that, we released our UK Coin in Greenwich last weekend and it hasn't been picked up yet - we thought it would go really quite quickly - being a busy area 'n' all. Have noticed locally as well that coins are not being picked up quickly - dare I say that maybe there is becaoming a 'glut' of them and they don't hold the value they once used to???? PLease don't flame me, please, ouch Edited February 25, 2006 by Andys101 & Redfrock Quote
+Kitty Hawk Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 I think you are right - I'd still go after one, but not as a special/urgent trip. I notice that they rarely go for more than a few £'s on ebeay these days too. I have six or seven in the wild: Compass Rose is actually wild Michigan, EU, England, Screw, Midwest, Maryland and Seven Summit all activated and ready for me to get handy with my drill and also set some caches set up. Collection of keepsies is growing nicely. I'm not sure why, it just is. Quote
+Haggis Hunter Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Bar one of the Scotland coins which I have just recieved I release all of my coins, no good at home, unless you are a collector. Quote
The Washers UK Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 I have got the Geocoin Bug when I can buy two I release 1 of them and keep the other I have just released my first 4 yesterday and have 1 more to release into the next cache I love to find a coin, so if I can share mine I will, the coins have a hole and a geoswag tag with our name engraved on. happy caching to one and all. +freespirit1402 Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 havent got any yet though ive orderdd two pengy and tigger ones for zr7 and myself so at least one will go into the wild Quote
+Happy Humphrey Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 (edited) A fair proportion of my collection is here. And here is the most valuable one. I'll have to add Scottish and English ones to the hoard now! HH Edited February 26, 2006 by Happy Humphrey Quote
+Kitty Hawk Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 (edited) Yes, I thought about popping over to get it when you first released it, but the prospect of probably having to make (at least) two trips is just putting me off. How come your IOM has a personal geocoin icon, when I've seen a IOM icon floating around? Good cache contents though! Edited February 27, 2006 by Kitty Hawk Quote
+Happy Humphrey Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 when I've seen a IOM icon floating around The next lot will have an icon, but AFAIK there are none with the icon available yet - where did you see it? You should be able to log these in the summer, anyway...although I'm sure that the FTF will be long gone by then. HH Quote
+Bud Lightbeer Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 I just received my first geo-coins, 2 of the very nice Scottish variety. I am keeping one to log into every cache I visit and record the mileage and one will be released very soon into a cache in Devon to travel. In future I will likely only buy one, but being a Glasweigan, this one was a special case. I can understand why people collect them, but it would certainly be nice to see more in the wild. If only we could rely on all cachers to keep them mobile Quote
+Alibags Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 I was contemplating this very issue after attending an event yesterday where loads of personal collections of geocoins were seen, my own included. I like to collect coins and take them out for a gloat from time to time, but I am less and less satisfied with hauling them out at events for mass grabbing. I was trying to think of how I could release an acceptable replica coin. I picked up a laminated version of a coin one time, and it was not very satisfying. I have decided therefore to release the numbers of the coins, but attached to a suitable object, like a regular TB number. Therefore, I will release a badger coin number attached to a small cuddly badger and an Isle of Man coin number attached to a manx cat. I am sure you get the idea. The 'coin' (in reality the number) will travel as normal and be tracked and I get to keep the pretty shiney coins to indulge my Gollem moments. Quote
+scaw Posted February 27, 2006 Author Posted February 27, 2006 i must admit i love to see where my coins go to and who logs them. Ive got a few waiting for a hole drilled in them then they go wild as my local geocachers know i just let them go then i watch The Golem and see how many hours (minutes) it takes for him to find them :D Quote
+Happy Humphrey Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 Alibags, It's one way of coping with the dilemma, but won't it rather disappoint those who go out of their way to pick up the coin, only to find it's not really there? They may not bother to read the travel bug page. The surrogate coins may be subjected to coin rage when found . I prefer to buy 2, release one and keep one. HH Quote
+lathama Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 i get 2 gcc coins a month, 1 release 1 keep 1 Quote

+Pharisee Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 I buy two of any coins that take my fancy. One I keep, the other I release. Quote
+purple_pineapple Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 Like others, I buy two and release one. However, not being collectors as such, I'm only buying a few (EGG, Wales, Scotland, UK and EU so far - Ireland and NI if they are made). I agree that having them 'collected' in the wild is a worry, but I still think its worth putting out the original. I have had some wonderful logs from people who have come across the UK one in the wild (only bought one EU coin) and it makes it worth the risk. PS - walkergeoff - I haven't pinched yours - its going in a nice cache soon - would you rather an easy to find or a good tough cache?! What about other peoples opinions? Quote
+Alibags Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 nice for all you moneybags who can afford two of every coin. I have already spent silly money on the coins I do have. "Coin Rage" you say? Hmm, well I think I will take my chance of coin rage against having then nicked. Mind you, you are right that people do not habitually read the cache/TB page so perhaps I will have to rename my coins to make this clear. Ultimately, it's impossible to proof your cache/TB/coin against all the varieties of mad/bad/stupid things that you could possibly imagine could happen to them, so yer pays yer money, yer makes your choice! Quote
alistair_uk Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 I am mot a fan of all this swapping coin numbers to get the icon. It was good fun when not many coins were in circulation, but now I can go to an event and log dozens. What I have decided to do is only log coins that I actually move. As a result I do aim to get a coin in circulation that is a bit different that people will chase it to get the icon, but not different enough to want to nick. I would also like a fairly rare coin to carry for people who meet me can log, but perhaps that is a bit hypocritical. Quote
