GOT GPS?

Recommended Posts

Presently Own: Garmin eTrex Legend

Previously Owned: Magellan 315

Future: ???? Any suggestions? Preferablly under $300 w/mapping

Try the Legend C , bundled I purchased mine for 250 bucks from Gander mountain.. (It may have been a sale)

And the topo maps that come with that, will work with your legend. (And any other garmin mapping device)

Right now, to my wife's dismay--she will never understand that you have got to have back up stuff and that no--they are not toys, but tools!

anyway I have got an explorist 300, a roadmate 300 and just picked up an explorist 210

I have had a Meridian Platinum--good one and I had an Explorist 600 but hated the lithium battery that never seemed to live up to the life expectancy that it was supposed to have so sold it on ebay and bought the 300 and had enough left over to pay for most of the roadmate 300....

Had a dell axim with the GPS that was kind of cool, but felt it was akward..

They have all come along ways from the first GPS units that I used in the Army a long time ago....

I have 4 units

1. Garmin Quest

2. Garmin 60 CSx

3. MS Streets and Trips 06 (With GPSr Puck)

4. Lowrance iFinder Go

I use the Quest for routing, the 60 for actually hunting the cache

The MS system I got for my laptop to make it easier to view a large area in relation to current position and then decide where I want to head to next.

My daughter uses the iFinder on her Girlscout trips, and my wife uses it when she travels...

Radioshack Digitraveler

Lowrance iFinder Pro

I bought the Radioshack Digitraveler really cheap off of Ebay to see if I would enjoy GPS. That got me hooked on geocaching. Pain in the rear though because it had to be wired to my Palm to work. Took two hands to carry it and was not very accurate. Just bought the Lowrance iFinder Pro on clearance at Academy. So far been real impressed with the accuracy. When I have the coordinates on the money on my GPSr I have been within a couple of feet of the cache.

<_< I just received my first unit, a Garmin eTrex (Yellow). It is very basic and it seems to be doing what I need, but I can see that one day I might want to get something better. My kids are really liking this new adventure, so I might pass it down to them someday.

In order of purchase:

Magellan GPS Companion for Palm

Magellan Meridian Platinum (my primary gpsr)

Garmin Etrex Vista (backup gpsr)

I never used the Magellan GPS Companion for geocaching. In fact, I forgot I had it when I first heard about geocaching. I found the processor in the Palm (Vx) too be incredibly underpowered to update the screen fast enough to make using the gpsr worthwhile for driving. It has since ended up in a drawer somewhere.

The MeriPlat has been my most reliable unit for geocaching and getting around. Augmented with the DirectRoute software, I find it hard to part with altho I do think about it from time to time. I have a picture in my mind of the "killer unit" for geocaching. I'll buy it and retire the MeriPlat when I see it.

I picked up the Vista when I found a price that was too good to resist. I used it for a month and half during that summer as my primary unit in the field while the MeriPlat handled turn-by-turn routing duty. I absolutely could not tolerate it constantly losing satelite lock. I'm utterly amazed that all my geocaching friends who used Etrexs had to constantly deal with that. In a way, I can see it making you a better hunter if didn't totally have to rely on the gpsr. On the other hand, I found it un-nerving to have to rely on a gpsr that sometimes knew where it was when I'm absolutely lost. I was happy to go back to my MeriPlat that very rarely lost it's lock, altho I still keep the Vista as a backup...you know, in case Bigfoot steals my MeriPlat.

As for that "killer unit", I have to say that Garmin is getting ever so closer to it...especially with the addition (finally!) of external flash memory. I thought Magellan might have nailed it with the eXplorist series, but there solution was lacking and might have even taken a step backwards by adopting a proprietary rechargeable battery. What I'm waiting for...something like the MeriPlat or the Garmin GPSMap 60CSx...i.e, external memory, electronic compass, great receiver, AA-batteries, turn-by-turn routing, and that one missing feature: the abilty to import full geocache descriptions including logs. I currently run Cachemate on my Palm Vx that only has 8 megs of memory. I can easily load descriptions for 300 caches including the last 5 logs with memory to spare. It just kills me that gpsrs can handle 1-2 GB SD cards, but yet don't fully make use of all that real estate! The hardware is in place...it just takes a little programming to write an import utility to handle gpx files and to write a geocaching mode screen to display the decriptions...maybe even allow you to decode the hint (like Cachemate). Garmin and Magellan are so close...they just need to have the commitment to see it all the way thru. One device that can truly do it all and do it well would be the geocaching killer app. For now, I make due with two devices...my MeriPlat with DirectRoute and my Palm Vx with Cachemate. Hopefully neither one will fail me before my dream gpsr sees the light of day.

Left my Garmin GPS 12 sitting on the roof of my car after logging I-64 Travel Bug B&B. ;)

After comparing models and 2 weeks of bidding wars on e-bay I ended up with ........ anoter GPS 12! At $50, couldn't beat the price and don't have to learn to use it. Was also bidding on GPS 60 models but they were mostly "buy now" rather than high bid sales.

Heh, nice thread :P

In my boat, a Philips AP-navigator Mk7 (a 1995-vintage GPS black box which upgrades an even older AP-navigator Mk 5 (originally a Decca-system navigator). Still works and has features that todays units lack

Handheld: Garmin GPS II (sold), Magellan 315A (lost), Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx (trying to learn it :) )

I may have the most basic of all units...

Motorola i710 Nextel cell phone running Trimble Navigation Silver.

No topo maps, just direction, speed, distance, and a track/waypoint map. Very challenging.

Looking to buy Garmin etrex Venture soon. I just want to make sure I can hook it up to the computer for topo maps and easy downloading of geocaching.com cache data.
