+jhammer Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I'm fairly new to this so I'm not sure of all the rules yet. I plan on getting more finds, when the weather gets better, before hiding my first cache. But I've been at least thinking about what I'd like to do when the time comes. I was sitting here looking at my bookcase, thinking about how badly it needs culled, and started thinking about using it in a cache. Would it be acceptable (or more importantly, appreciated) to do a book cache and/or a CD cache? I read in some other threads about using CD's, the impression I got is that it is ok as long as the CDs are original and not copies. These would be factory CD's with the original packaging. Books would be paperbacks in good shape and I would have to find a way to ensure water tightness so they aren't ruined. I was thinking either sealed bucket or .50 cal can. I don't know if I would make them take a book/cd, leave a book/cd or just take one and exchange for regular swag. Any suggestions? Quote
+nfa Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Ziplock bags work well for books in caches, and I would assume for CDs as well. I might also throw a piece of chalk into each ziplock...I've heard that it will absorb moisture pretty effectively in small areas. Jamie Quote

I'm getting ready to incorporate this into a cache in the woods. I've got a couple of books on CD and some paperbacks I'm going to put in. Saw somebody do this in S. IL and thought it a great idea. Just like a cache, each book gets a Book Crossing ID (BCID). Book can be entered into the website and tracked to see where they've been and read any comments of people who cared to leave them. This site was originally set up to just leave a book in a public place to be found, but geoching makes a neat tie-in. My only problem is in getting rid of books. I tend to hang onto them. +Lord Stirling Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I've found a number of book and CD exchange caches. One popular idea is the Bookcrossing cache. Register the books in the cache on Bookcrossing.com so you can follow their travels after you've sent them on their way. A large .50 cal ammo box would be perfect for this purpose. As NFA mentioned, you might also want to bag the books individually in Ziplocs too. Quote
+Torchbearer Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I think it's a great idea. I would love to find a good book in a cache as long as I had something to trade for it. I have a book and a children's Disney CD in my mess of swag. I haven't dropped them off but I would suspect someone would want them. Quote

Jamie We found a cache recently where the cache had lots of the little dessicant bags in it, to keep it dry. If you are bagging the books, and can scavenge through old shoe boxes, etc., you might want to toss them into each bag. This is probably not as critical for the cd's if they are still in the original packaging. How critical it will be for the books likely depends on where you live (do you live in the Southeast, where humidity hits 99%, or in the Sahara...). Quote
+wiseye Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I have a cache in Florida, BOOKS ABOUND!, I put paperbacks in it. I registered them on Bookcrossing.com. I made it an easy cache to find for cachers, it has never been muggled. People seem to enjoy it. I ask them to take one leave one or just sign the log. People put other swag in as well and TBs. A .50 cal ammo can works great. Also use Freezer bags rather than regular zip locks. Good luck. Quote

Was a nice large cache and my kids loved it. They got an antique Peter Rabbit book out of it. GCJ1F9 Quote
+Team Snoopy Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 There is a cache here where you trade book for book. Quote
