Poidawg Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Okay I have two possible places to put my first cache. I went out and got some ammo cans from the army surplus store and am now realizing how inadequate they will be for the areas I have picked out. I am wondering. Does anyone know if the paint can type containers which Michaels and OSH sell are any good. I would plan to paint them with rustoleum, but want to know if anyone has used them and if they have any staying power. Thanks. Quote
StarBrand Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Never have seen one myself - but let me suggest Lock-n-Locks - tupperware type containers that have a rubber seal in the lids to make them (mostly) waterproof. Pretty cheap at WalMart or Targets. Quote
Magoonies Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 This cache uses one but it is largely protected from the elements. It was also pretty rusted and the lid did not seal well when I was there. This area gets some snow but not too bad. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...52-9e4786ecfaa4 Quote
TetrAmigos Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 (edited) I use old Army decon containers for the mid-small caches, pill fob and 35mm film cases containers for the micros. In fact, I just posted a update on our blog here: http://gc4dummies.blogspot.com/ Here's a link to my article about the pill FOB's: http://gc4dummies.blogspot.com/2005/04/new...os-arrived.html Here's a link to my article about the Decon containers: http://gc4dummies.blogspot.com/2005/04/new...rs-arrived.html (GREAT DEAL) I guarantee you won't find a better way to stash a cache of this style. These containers were CHEAP! Edited February 21, 2006 by Trace Amigos Quote
TeamGuisinger Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 What's wroung with the ammo cans? Exactly, what could be wrong with an ammo can besides size? I'd say no way on the paint cans. They're made to keep paint in, not water out. Plus they rust easy not because they're not painted, but because they're made out of cheap metal that degrades quickly. Quote
Dave_W6DPS Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 What's wroung with the ammo cans? I tend to worry about the military appearance. I can just hear someone guessing about why an ammo can is there: "It's a bomb!" or "Someone is stockpiling ammo!" I prefer innocuous looking containers, and really prefer to camo the container so it is less likely to attract the wrong sorts of attention. Dave_W6DPS Quote
GIDEON-X Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 There was a fellow in the Imperial Valley (southren Califorina) that used "Paint Cans".... they worked ok, but the finder best have a tool to open them (pry-type)........ Quote
