E.C.O. - Evansville (in) Area Caching Organization

On Saturday, a group of cachers got together in Evansville, IN, to start a new caching group - ECO (the Evansville area Caching Organization). ECO is a spin-off group from Indigo, and fortunately many members of Indigo were able to come and help us get started and to find our way. At the suggestion of some of the other attendees, I'm posting about it here, in case anyone is interested in joining who wasn't able to come on Saturday.

Almost 50 cachers braved the cold and snow to come out to eat and discuss plans for the new group. I must admit to some concern when I woke up Saturday morning, with a couple inches of snow already on the ground and more falling. But, thankfully most were able to come. We had quite a blend of cachers from Indiana (Deermark, Daggy, Kepnfit, Prariepartners, WCNut, Sparhawk&Sparslady, Shaggy and Daphne of Mysteries Inc, Kayak-cowboy, solarwib, Camp Monsters, Krawhcs, JHB50 & Better 1/2, Team Neos, Mama Jane, bballgirl22, Cutter Mike, Peacecamp1, and JAPTKD), Illinois (Wolf Pack 359, Gibson5String, and ChetLeague), and Kentucky (Kodiak_62, MetroGT, Wheresitat&Overthere, HotRodonFire, and t girl) who were able to make it out.

Wheresitat and Overthere brought some great door prizes (the Owensboro cachers must get to see lots of unique and interesting hides!) and the biggest TB and TB hitch-hiker that we'd seen yet FOMOCO pickmeup truck ! After we'd settled in with some food, we finally got down to business, and came up with a few tentative plans. We don't have an entire year of meetings and plans worked out already or anything like that - for now we're playing it one get-together at a time. But we did make the following plans:

On April 22nd Mama Jane and bballgirl22 volunteered to host the next event, in the Patoka, IN area. We're still planning out the details (might include a CITO in it, since that's CITO day/Earth day, or might just have a potluck-style get together with people heading out and caching afterwards - still in the planning stages). Details will follow as we figure them out. :o Second, we set up a mailing list/yahoogroups group for ECO (eco_geocaching). The list/website is already flourishing, with a Frappr map (thanks kodiak_62!), potential logos (thanks MetroGT!), links to other geocaching groups, and an on-going discussion of what to plan for the April 22nd meeting.

I would like to say thanks again to everyone who was able to come out on Saturday. It was great to see how many people were excited about starting a new local group. I also know that several individuals really wanted to attend on Saturday, but were unable due to weather or work or ... We wanted to make sure that all area geocachers knew that they are welcome to join the group at any time, and for everyone to know that our definition of "area geocachers" is pretty wide open. Most of our events will likely center on the tri-state/Evansville area, but anyone who is interested in coming is welcome, no matter where you live.

If you are interested in joining the mailing list/yahoo group, feel free to contact me and I can give you information on how to join. If you are looking for information about our next event (but aren't up for joining another mailing list :o ), you can also feel free to contact us. We'll try to post more information back here as well as on some of the other geocaching websites (such as Indigo's, INKy's, River Valley Geocaching's, etc.). Some of our events will be full-fledged event caches listed on gc.com, while other get-togethers won't be; but we'll try to make sure people find out about all events.

One last thanks to everyone, especially some of the more experienced cachers who came to help us sort out what details we needed to settle, and what things we could play by ear. And a big thanks to Mama Jane and bballgirl22 who volunteered to host our next event!

Does he know that he can change his name any time that he wants to, and his stats will all carry over to the new name?

of course, it will just encourage him more... you've seen his collection of caches that are ready to be placed as soon as he finds a good spot! :P:)

Hope the folks in your area have their bifocals cleaned and ready to go.

Has anyone looked at the upcoming weather forecast? Looks like we're finally getting to spring. Time to really go hunt (and hopefully hide :)) some caches. What do you think? I know there's a bunch of cachers in Evansvile, but noone (myself and Beffums included) seems to have hidden any caches in the past couple of weeks. If everyone would just hide 2-3 caches in the next month, imagine how many new caches would be in Evansville. Just a thought...

At the risk of looking like I'm talking to myself, it looks like Team Viagra and Kirksters have taken me up on my challenge and then some. Has anyone else seen all the Beavis and Butthead caches they're putting out. And they're doing it in clumps too of 6-12 at a time seems like. I just hope and Beavis and Butthead don't cause too much trouble in Evansville. :o

I've been working in Eville the past few weeks on the corner of 1st & Diamond (sorry if you drive thruogh there!) I want to get some caches in the area, but can't seen to make time! "Four Cache" Seems to be the closest, but i always get there before opening, and have to work the rest of the day! Maybe one day I'll hit this town in one good trip!

TLC should be near as well, and also has no opening hours issues. And, I think at least one Beavis and Butthead cache is really close to there - just north of Diamond in the parking lot to the west of 1st.

Finally, if you get a break... Go to Uhlhorn Street (on first, just south of Diamond), and park by animal control. You'll see the starting point for the Greenway passage at the end of the little parking lot. There is one of my Goldilocks caches right at the start of the trail, and then if you follow the trail to Garvin park (about 1/2 mi to 3/4 mi), you'll find about 7 or 8 caches along the way. Easy paved path to walk along, none of the caches involve bushwhacking, though some do require walking across the grass.

Our next ECO event will be on June 17th in Princeton, IN. Reiki Angel has graciously offer to be the hostess for the event - a pot luck lunch at a local park. All are welcome to attend - you do not need to be a member to come. For details, check out the event cache page:

Thanks for the suggestions! I have a freind that lives on the West side, and i think he is interrested in caching. Maybe i can set up a day of caching for the both of us. i'll also point him to this forum. Thanks again! jade

Just a reminder about tomorrow's event, if anyone will be in the Princeton, IN, area. Looking forward to seeing everyone there (and introducing the new geopups - Bo and Luke). (hey - talk to JAPTKD about the names; I was just firm about not renaming the cats Daisy and Rosco)

FREE TO GOOD OWNER: FALLEN ACES

I keep the "Fallen Aces" cache in Evansville, and recently posted a memo to the log indicating that it will be archived by the end of June, as I relocate to Charlotte, NC.

Since posting that memo, however, I've reflected further on the subject, and it really seems a waste to let this cache go. It's in such a nice spot and I've enjoyed the comments from all who have found it.

Therefore, I decided I would see if I could find someone to take over stewardship of the cache so that we could keep it going. Anyone in the Evansville area interested in taking over this cache can email me at amweltz@att.net

Thanx.

I work at UE and would happily take it over for you - it's less than 100 feet from my office. I'll send an e-mail as well.

Time to announce yet another ECO event - this time the July event. As always, anyone who is in the area on the day of the event is welcome to attend, whether or not you are or want to be a member of ECO. Given the potential for sweltering weather, the July event will be held indoors - aka in air conditioning! So, check out the event page for details, but the basics are July 29th, 11 am (Central time), in Evansville, IN. Hope to see you there!

Ok, the July event is in the books. Lots of talking and eating, and then (surprise surprise) some of us found time to go caching afterwards.

But, this is to note that the August event is already planned and ready for people to start considering. This time we'll be meeting in Owensboro, KY. Plan is to meet on Satruday, August 26th, at 11 am. MetroGT is planning the event, and thinks this might be the first event cache in Owensboro. Hopefully, with a month of warning, those who are interested in coming will have a chance to hear about it and see if it works in their schedule.

All are welcome - you do not have to be a member of E.C.O. to attend. Owensboro has many many hides, if you've never been there, and one of the main local hiders (and finders) - GeoJimmie - is planning on attending. So if you are free that day, and not all that far from Owensboro, come on out and join us - we'd love to see you.

There is going to be a group heading sound this Sunday, August 20th, to make yet another attempt on the infamous nano-multicache "A Small Town Nightmare (GCT7P9)", amongst others. If anyone is interested, let Beffums, Solarwib, BigT, or japtkd know. The more the merrier (and I REALLY want this one off my DNF list!).

Hi! My family is new to the area, but we hope to start getting caught up on the area caches. Looking forward to meeting folks and seeing the local hides.

You've got good timing on your post. The group is having its next meeting in Owensboro this Saturday at 11 am if you're free. The waypoint is GCXC5G.
