Hi

 

Does anyone know where those cool US maps come from that show what states you have found caches in. You usually see them in user profiles with the states visited in a differant color.

What a coincidence! I just today updated the state map on my profile to incorporate the shading based on number of finds, using the first link in Airmapper's post. I'm working on a map now for keeping track of the counties in Ohio and Pennsylvania where I've found caches. Here's my US map:

Can you tell me where you post the map jpeg so it can be linked to your profile page. I can't find a convenient place.

When you generate the map, it should give you a page to view it, this is it's online storage, and you link to it.

 

Should look something like this:

Let me clear that up a little, I think I confused you and myself.

 

When you make your map, there is a link to view it, highlight and copy the URL address. Then using the above code, swap my maps URL for yours, and insert that on your profile page, and select the check box "HTML used in description" or something like that.

Note how Ambrosia's map and my map display a bit smaller. We each saved the image generated by the website, then edited down its size using imaging software like PhotoShop, PaintShop Pro, etc. When finished, upload the saved image to your profile page's image gallery, then copy its URL to paste into your profile. If you do this, then your map won't throw off the display of the other information on your profile page.

 

Today I finished my Ohio and Pennsylvania County Maps.

I need to do the same. I can't stand that it trows off the rest of the profile page. Now if you can tell me where to upload images to the profile page I would apreciate it. I can only find places to upload to the individual cache pages.

To find a nice template for your state map, Google is your friend. I entered "Map of Ohio Counties" and found this one. I like maps that include the names as well as the boundaries. Then, I just used my photo software to change the un-cached counties to white. Tip: A *cool* and *fast* way to get a county map: Order an "All My Finds" pocket query and open that GPX file in Google Earth. Under the "Layers" menu on the left, select the option to show the County border lines. Then pan around the state.

Upload *any* image to your profile gallery just like you did when you created your avatar. It is a good place to store things that you want to link to from your profile page. (My Account ==> Edit My Profile ==> Change Avatar ==> Upload New Image)

Too bad I can't use Goofle Earth. My main system doesn't run MS products, and the kids' computer runs win 98.

One possible page is www.keenpeople.com and use their GPX Mapping Tool. The trick to know there is that a gpx file as sent from GC.com won't work directly, or at least it doesn't for me. The work around is to open the GC GPX file in EasyGPS and save it as a gpx file. This file is then selected for inclusion in the map and will work fine.

Another use of the Keenpeople gpx mapping tool, will generate maps of a state. Using the advanced functions define the center of the state (lat/long) and a width and height to cover the state. If you've filtered your gpx file to only include caches of interest in the state, then you can further manipulate the image in any photo software package. Here is my home state of Oklahoma (less two counties in the panhandle) showing my finds. You can see that the individual counties are noted. This image was generated at the 640x480 settings. Use of the other resolutions will change the detail shown.
