+Baralak
Greetings, As a fairly new geocacher, and upon reading some of the situation some geocachers get involved with, I believe the largest problem is the lack of education that the general public has concerning geocaching. Some see it as nothing more than high tech cow tipping, or a cloke and dagger type of event when iit isn't... Most geocaches in my area are linked to some type of educational or place of interest that is either long forgotten in the area, or something of a well known local place not known outside of the local area. Our small band of geocachers(around 25 in my direct area) have teamed up with the local NBC station in town and they are doing a week long sweeps story concerning geocaching. The reporter is going to ride along and find caches and at the end of the week will hide his own cache. During this week we will discuss the rules of geocaching, proper locations, tools, current locations (with out spoilers) and how to contact a local geocaching organization. Even though geocaching does not have a "bad rap" in our area this is the first step into changing the preception of geocaching. I'm sure we will have a influx of short timers, but hopefully we will have some good geocachers spun out of this program. Also local law enforcement, and political leaders will be interviewed and informed as part of this story. We are currently updateing our website that will be given as a link for more information as well as our links to Groundspeak and gc.com. These are just a few steps you can do in your local communities to inform the public exactly of what geocaching is all about. Television, and new paper news departments are always looking for interesting and compelling stories to tell concerning the people that live in their area. In your local groups, find someone that wouldn't mind contacting the media. Don't be susprised if you have to contact them more than once. Really don't be susprised to find them wanting to do a story about this wonderful sport of geocaching. Peace Baralak www.nelageo.net Edited February 11, 2006 by Baralak Quote Link to comment

+cudlecub
Great job in educating those in your area. I hope it turns out well. Quote Link to comment
+SgtSue
Great that it is going to be a week long piece. That will allow you the time to say what you need to and people who see it might talk to others who will pick up on it as the week goes on. If the station puts it on their web page to be viewed later remember to post a link for us to check it out. Quote Link to comment

CoyoteRed
That is fantastic! BTW, I was born in Bastrop and much of my family is from the area. Military brat so moved away at an early age and settled elsewhere. Come back for family visits. EDIT: clarity. Edited February 26, 2006 by CoyoteRed Quote Link to comment
