+TheBeanTeam Posted January 31, 2006 Posted January 31, 2006 Proposal: for category Earth Science Places Subcategory-SNOTEL Test Sites SNOTEL=SNOwpack TELemetry From the NRCS web site “The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) installs, operates, and maintains an extensive, automated system to collect snowpack and related climatic data in the Western United States called SNOTEL (for SNOwpack TELemetry). The system evolved from NRCS's Congressional mandate in the mid-1930's "to measure snowpack in the mountains of the West and forecast the water supply." The programs began with manual measurements of snow courses; since 1980, SNOTEL has reliably and efficiently collected the data needed to produce water supply forecasts and to support the resource management activities of NRCS and others.” Currently there are 778 Snotel test sites in 13 Western states. Each state has its own interactive map of sites Sample state map Each site has its own page which includes Latitude and Longitude coordinates. Google Earth and NRCS Snotel Sites In order to place a waymark for this subcategory a waymarker must post at least two photos taken at the Snotel location, one picture of the test site with the waymarker and or GPSr included and at least one other photo of the best view from the test site. Variables would include: A link to the particular Snotel site page What state it is located in? Elevation What do you think? Anyone beat me to this idea?
