Does A Garmin Legend Float?

I know in the manual it mentions the waterproof standard of the Garmin eTrex Legend (1 m for 30 minutes, I think), but does any know if it floats. The water proof standard doesn't help much if it falls into a lake and sinks to the bottom.

If it doesn't float, does anyone have any ideas about how to make it float. I was thinking of attaching the 'floatie' keychains (used for boating), but I'm not sure if that would make it bouyant enough.

I realize the best thing is to keep it out of lake in the first place but I'd like to have some extra protection.

Thanks for any input.

No, the Legend does not float! It is fairly waterproof, however. I've had mine (both Legend and Legend C) in my pocket or fanny pack on several occasions involving situations like canoe tipping, falling in creek, swimming to island, hard rain, and so forth, with no problems at all.

You could attach a large fishing bobber to the lanyard. Those things go on and off easily, and they're easy to see in the water.

If you want a naturally bouyant unit comparable to a Legend, have a look at the GPSMAP® 76. According to Garmin, "this unit will actually float if accidentally dropped in the water."

Yep, sinks. I know for a fact. But as someone else said, it does great in creeks--even partially frozen ones. (Now, if only I could say the same for that nice watch I was wearing at the time).
