What Is A "project Ape" Cahce?

Recommended Posts

From GeoLex:

Project A.P.E. – A promotional tie-in with 20th Century Fox, to publicize their remake of the movie Planet of the Apes. A number of caches were set up around the country, stocked with promotional items from the movie. A few of these caches still exist, and now function as Traditional caches. For the curious, A.P.E. stood for Alternative Primate Evolution.

Though they function as traditional caches, you still get the cool 'Project A.P.E.' icon in your profile.

And, as a bit of trivia, most typographical errors that make it into print are in the headlines, because we tend to skim over them and concentrate on the body copy. But two in a row -- headline and sub-head -- is pretty special.

The ape cache nearest me is almost a thousand miles away and, yes, I've been considering doing it as a day trip. Because, you know...ICON!!!

Edit: remove typo. Well, I never!

It's something that forces the Icon Hos to travel far distances (unless they happen to live near one) just for that ONE cache find. And yes, I resemble that remark.

Nicely put

Been there done that got the ICON !

It was actually a "type" of event for geocachers in Indiana .. but not an official Event . A group of Indiana cachers got together one Saturday and decided to make a run for the boarder so to speak to specifically grab the "APE Cache " that was in the state of IL .

It was done as a day trip with other caches grabbed wilst we were all there .

It was a really cool invasion so to speak of IL , this "caravan" of Indiana auto's roaming around .

If AuntieWeasel is in Rhode Island, the nearest A.P.E. Cache would be in Maryland, about 400 miles as the crow flies.  Still a heckuva day trip. But doable.

As indeed she is. But only 400? To my old fambly doorstep in Tennessee was 1,100. And when I used to go to DC every February I thought it was at least...well, near that.

You sure? By land?

Wanna go?

I know that at a few of the events here in maryland, when we have out of town guests the group usually tries to go hit the APE either the day before or the day after the event. But nothing as cool as an invasion.

I'd call it 425 driving miles from Providence RI to Gaithersburg MD. A dreadful drive along the east coast megapolis. With a Great Big Ammo can at the end.

I did wanna go, and I did go. Unable to bear the thought of I-95 all the way up the east coast, I flew. Through a snafu at the airport, my bags made the flight, I didn't. This meant I got the Full Body Inspection for passenger flying on different flight than luggage. A.P.E. indeed.

I prefer to think of it as a 'Geocaching Vacation'. Three new states for my map, plus the D of C. Lots of great places visited, and met an old friend whom I had not met before. AND the A.P.E ICON!! (Okay, I had taunted my broother with the fact that there is an A.P.E. cache not too far from him, so I had to ge the icon too.)

Sheesh I've been working within 50 miles of the that one since June and haven't attempted it.

I've also lived just outside NYC for 48 years now and have never been to the Statue of Liberty .Maybe some day for both.

Yes, but Auntie Weasle isn't going by crow, she drives, at least I think she does.

I'd like to see Auntie go by crow.:D;) I didn't know it was an option, next trip I'll go via crow express.
