Tracking Numbers

This issue was brought up in another of the threads here, but was never really addressed. I will quote the exact post here:

Great coin  :)

Tracking would just enrich TPTB, so I would say NO!

Besides you can only "rent" the numbers, never really own them.

I do not ever remember signing a rental agreement for any of the coins I have purchased...

If this particular coin ends up being trackable will there be a tracking number rental agreement?

When we buy a geocoin (or TB) with tracking numbers what are we really getting? GBOTS has suggested we are "renting" the nubmers, but to date I have seen nothing to back that up. I have also heard a RUMOR that a tracking number is only good for 2,000 logs (I pray that I have a TB that can attain that in many years).

Another RUMOR is that specific numbers have been deactivated due to virtual logging activity and I question if that is legal/appropiate/allowable (personally I do not allow virtual logging so it is not an issue for me).

When I have "purchased" a coin or TB, I have just assumed that it was "all" mine and I could do with it as I wish. What are we really getting when we purchase a trackable geocoin or TB tag?

My take on this would be that you are paying for an entry (or, rather, a series of entries) in a database owned by Groundspeak. What you have engraved on the coins is a unique reference to those database entries.

At the end of the day, it's Groundspeak's database, and they can do what they want with it, and they can decide what sort of entries you can put in the database.

Unless you signed a contract with Groundspeak which says that you can log an unlimited number of entries in the database, or that they will no restrict how you transfer the coins/TBs around, then they are at libety to decide what happens.

The engraved code on the coin is doesn't place any restrictions on what you can do with the coin - the only restrictions would be what you can do with the Groundspeak database.

I never really thought of this before. It might be nice if any restrictions, etc. were spelled out when we paid for the numbers.

I don't what is meant by 'renting'.... Does Groundspeak get the number back if we don't make more payments??

Yes some virtual coins/tb have been disabled in a crack down... You haven't read those threads? Basically, they were killed because it was considered an abuse of the tracking system. You can use the number to track one item, or person (personal TB). You can't put the number on multiple things (replicators), or just pass the number around so everyone everywhere can log them (virtuals). It's also been noted that people can get there locked virtual coins/TBs unlocked if they actually choose to use the number for an actual traveler.

That last part is really for Groundspeak's lawyers...

As far as I can tell (no im not a lawyer, this is just my opinon), when you purchase a tracking number you are purchasing the ability to track some singular (1) thing from gc.com listed cache to gc.com list cache (either person to person, or your personal movements). You can track whatever item you want within reason (family site, no porn, no swearing, don't use things or goals that will definently tick people off). I've never seen it written, but I don't think you should expect to track things that don't go into geocaches, and there is no way to input coords on your own anyway. And finally don't do anything that will just beat on the tracking system... IMO thats what got the virtuals killed, there got to be enough of them out there just zipping around the globe a thousand miles an hour and being 'found' by hundreds of people day, that it was starting to be a strain.
