North Carolina Historic Markers

I would like to start up a section listing North Carolina Historic Markers that are found along highways and city streets.

This would be along the same lines that are used in, as an example, Georgia Historic Markers Waypoints

Thanks!

Hi! I am the manager of the Pennsylvania Historic Markers Waymarking category. This was one of the original "seed categories" that was included when the site was first introduced back in August. It has since grown to become the category with the second-highest number of waymarks in it -- 246. Only the McDonald's category has more. :D

The popularity of this category, and the interest in other states like North Carolina, makes me excited about the future of Waymarking. Groundspeak has already created a separate entry in the directory for Historic Markers, under which the separate categories for each country or state's marker program will eventually be found. (They even borrowed my words for the category description -- I'm flattered!) Right now, there are only four states with categories but once the category creation and management process is in place, I expect that interest in this area will really take off.

In the future, I envision a whole separate forum where all the category managers and others interested in historic markers will be able to get together to compare notes. How to index the markers? How to work with government officials to make the Waymarking database helpful to them? What are the coolest/oldest/funniest markers out there? These are some of the topics we would be able to discuss.

As of today, there are 423 waymarks for historic markers. Think of that as 423 virtual caches which would never have seen the light of day. Many of them take you to interesting places where you can learn something and maybe even launch a bigger adventure to explore history or find a nearby geocache.

I look forward to seeing North Carolina join the ranks of Waymarking categories in the Historic Markers corner of the directory. As a former resident of the Tarheel State, with family living there currently, I will enjoy finding and marking some waymarks the next time I'm down your way for a visit.

Feel free to contact me for advice on how to set up and manage your category. I've been kept quite busy with mine, and have given a lot of thought to it.

i would be willing to manage the SC, TN, and KY categories. I guess i would look at the other categories, besides GA, and model them on the others.

I also think it would be great to work projects and stuff as noted above. i say i will manage those due to the fact that i have markers in those areas to post.

i feel that the historical markers are a seed for all of Waymarking. the problem would be getting managers for the categories. thus i am volunteering my services to get the categories up and running, and when the time comes, someon residing in those states would adopt the categories from me. i currently own 2 categories, and both were adoptions from those who retracted their rights from the locationless conversion, i guess.

i believe that the Waymarking community, much like the geocaching community, always enjoys a good historical marker--be it a cache, virtual, locationless, or waymark.
