Wow, bit serious reaction that, though understandable. thanks for bringing it up. confirms the reason for getting permission from the landowner for your caches. and clearly marking the box.

IIRC, there's something in the cahce placement guidelines (along with the "no burying" rule) about not placing caches under bridges. Its a restriction I've seen flouted on plenty of rural caches (some of my recent finds have been at or under little footbridges) but for urban or highway bridges, then I guess the rule makes sense...as the story goes to show.

I believe (but am open to correction), that the no bridges guideline is particularly aimed at our friends across the water, probably for just this reason. I feel that our own mods would be more lenient! I suppose itsa the reverse of the dry stone wall scenario (except we don't need the bomb squad to blow up caches in dry stone walls! )

The particular guideline reads thus:

Caches near or under public structures deemed potential or possible targets for terrorist attacks. These include but are not limited to highway bridges, dams, government buildings, elementary and secondary schools, and airports.

This would indicate that a small rural footbridge over some backwater stream is OK as that's not likely to be a terrorist target - but sticking one under Tower Bridge is a no-no.

There is also the size of cache to take in to account - a 35mm film canister could be judged OK as it's too small to be a viable explosive device - a 5 gallon bucket wouln't be a good idea in such a position!

When reviewing UK caches we are well aware of the differences in culture between the USA & Europe and take a "very relaxed" view of this particular guideline. We have happily published many caches under bridges (and near dams) with no problems at all.

 

As long as common sense is used you should be OK.

I wasn't sure if pylons were included in this category and so avoided hidung under them but have since found a few caches sited under major power lines. A few pylons in the UK were blown by terrorists up some time ago.
