+azspecter Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 hey guys- I'm getting my first GPS unit today- the 60CSX. Im just wondering what to do with it first? Are there settings I need to plugin? Anything I need to update/download? How do I get it 'working'? I know these are rudimentery questions here, but I've never owned a GPS before. Any suggestions? Thanks Quote
+mr. obnoxious Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 turn it on and wait for signals.....then I suggest reading the manual Quote
+azspecter Posted January 20, 2006 Author Posted January 20, 2006 lol- yeah... I didn't know if people wanted me to time the turnon/lock part or do any testing with it. Of course, you'd have to explain to me how I know when it's locked or found signal! LOL... Quote
+mr. obnoxious Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 oh yes thanks for reminding me I did forget to tell you to time the signal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess you should read the manual before turning it on since that is Important before use. Quote
+JohnnyVegas Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 like others have said --- read the directions, then when other post questi ns you can help them. Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 (edited) I wonder if these units still need to be 'baked' for 30 minutes. Edited January 20, 2006 by BlueDeuce Quote
moonpup Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Why don't you try a hobby by the name of Geocaching Quote
+azspecter Posted January 20, 2006 Author Posted January 20, 2006 lol- yeah, I'm planning on getting into some geocaching as soon as it arrives! Should be any minute now... What's this about baking for 30min? Anything else I should know? Thanks Quote
moonpup Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 (edited) What's this about baking for 30min? Anything else I should know? Thanks You need to let it sit outside with a clear view of the sky so that it can acquire the satellites and build it's almanac. Edited January 20, 2006 by moonpup Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 After looking through the manual it looks like it does need time to update the almanac. Let it sit in the open for 30 minutes (The dash of a car is the safest and most secure place for this). You would need to do this again if you travel several hundred miles without it turned on. Quote
+azspecter Posted January 20, 2006 Author Posted January 20, 2006 So, let me get this straight- the Trip and Waypoint manager software doesn't do a damned thing until I buy another software package? I already ordered Navigator (NA), but wont be in till next week. Quote
+Whittling Fisher Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 The trip and waypoint manager do not have downloadable maps, if that is what you mean. However, you can easily geocache without the autorouting maps of Navigator if you want to. Also, the unit comes with a built in basemap, so it will show you some roads. Quote
+azspecter Posted January 20, 2006 Author Posted January 20, 2006 ahhh, ok. I'll have to wait till City Nav comes in... Would you give me a quick pointer on how to find a geocache with these things? ie- do I type in coordinates or something? Then, does it automatically tell me where to turn, how to get there, etc etc? Or, do I do all that on the computer first, then upload it to the unit itself? I'm a little lost... Thanks Quote
+kgag Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 You can do either you can plug in the coords manually on the unit itself (the coords are listed on the geocache page). Or you can hook it up with USB and transfer them direct from the site. I would suggest getting another application called easygps to be the main transfer software it is a bit faster and less clunky than the trip and waypoint manager. Then tell it to find the waypoint you just created and choose either off road (no turn by turn) or follow road (with turn by turn) Good Luck! Thanks, kgag. Quote
+azspecter Posted January 20, 2006 Author Posted January 20, 2006 ok cool! How is that different from the Swiss Army Knife application? Can I download the cache info, including hints, level of difficulty, etc etc right into it and view it on my GPS itself? So, I pull up the website, download the pages, import them somehow into this software, and then upload them all into my GPS, correct? Here's the dumb questions- then what? Do I just choose a waypoint that was uploaded, and somehow have it route me to it, all within the GPS? Thanks for all the help! Quote

Or, the best way is to become a Premium Member, create Pocket Queries for areas you will be caching, get those delivered to your email InBox, open them up in GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife), filter the data to your heart's content, then send the waypoints to the GPSr from GSAK, and then . . . Go caching! Quote
