+Bill & Tammy Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Why do these people never live in Eastern Iowa?? It's not fair I tells ya! So true! Back on topic, halfast... you may want to scroll through some of the threads here and check out the various signatures, I think there are some quite clever sayings and quotes. One of my favorites is "not all who wander are lost" -JRR Tolkien Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Okay, I've calmed down...a bit. You can always hook up later with that cacher. I bet they would love to discuss what to burn into the handle. If you want to insure only interested people apply you could just put in a certificate to redeem a stick. Quote
bogleman Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 I got a GC staff emblem as a FTF in a cache so I had an extra stick laying around and left the stick with the new emplem reset into the top of it at a cache for a local who hid many of the very first few caches I ever found. My way of saying thanks. Don't have to put anything on them leave them plain and let the finder dress them up the way they want Quote
+dinobalz Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Great FTF prize! Wish I could find one of your caches. I like the coupon idea; but how do you fit a walking stick in a cache in the first place? You must use missle size ammo boxes!! Quote
+olbluesguy Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 You could just leave co-ordinates leading to the prize in the cache for the first finder. Hang it in a tree or whatever they will know what they are looking for. Quote
+Team Maccabee Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Shoot, I'll go to Colville for a hiking stick!! There's a thread on making the El Diablo hiking staff. It may have a variety of ideas. I think the idea of customizing it for the FTFer is a great idea. Maybe putting their name on it. Team Maccabee Quote
+grueinthedark Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Also back on topic; as i walked along the supposed golden path I was trembling with fear all the lions and the wizards yet to come from "The Golden Path" by The Chemical Brothers Quote
+oldnavy59 Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Why not just FTF & th GC number or cache name that kinda makes it very unique cause it tells it all Quote
+LSUFan Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 (edited) There is a cacher in MS who makes much sought after walking sticks as ftf prizes and such. He does the coupon/certificate thing, which he puts in the caches. You then send him the certificate with all the info he needs, and he custom builds your hiking stick. He'll then mail it to you in a pvc pipe container. I know he goes to a lot of trouble and expense, but they are very popular in our part of the country. A lot of people watch his profile to see when and where he puts the certificates. His geocacher handle is SuperSquid, and the sticks are called SSO's. (SuperSquid Originals) You're just not a true geocacher down here, unless you have a SSO. Edited January 9, 2006 by LSUFan Quote
+Lafrog Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 I make walking sticks not only for FTf's, but I also leave them as my sig item at caches where they can be hidden nearby. I make special cards that I leave in the cache directing the next finder the the stick. I also leave one at each of my hides in the Spring when I do maintenance. Each one has a frog and a number burned into them so I can keep track of who has them. So far, I've given out 58 sticks, some as far away as Virginia Beach. Quote
+halffast Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 Thanks for all the suggestions.I want the FTF to have the prize when they log the cache so it will be at the cache site."FTF & the cache name is a great Idea"Possibly I will start that way and add some cool caching saying like "Im not lost Im geo-caching" as it says on my cards.Any other cool sayings will help me out with this..THANKS AGAIN for your great Ideas Quote
+wewalkthewoods Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Heck I live in Suncrest, Wa. 12 mi north of Spokane and would love to know when your going to do this. I also built our 2 staffs for the wife and I. I used hickory and black walnut in 3/4 X 1/4" strips and laminated them together, routered the edges and cut a bevel on the ends. Quote
+halffast Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 (edited) these are just sticks I found hiking and I just sanded them off and will varnish.Nothing real great like walnut.Mostly pine.I will put them out in new caches as soon as the snow allows.(spring) Edited January 22, 2006 by halffast Quote
+fishingdude720 Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 How about "I know exactly where I am, I have a GPS" on one side and Put "First is Fun! and GC code" on the other side. Quote
+halffast Posted January 28, 2006 Author Posted January 28, 2006 How about "I know exactly where I am, I have a GPS" on one side and Put "First is Fun! and GC code" on the other side. This sounds good exept for the GC code.I wont know the code until after I place the cache and get it approved. The stick will have to be completed and left at the cache site when I get the coords for it.Other wise I will have to dissable it for at least a week while I varnish it.I am putting the cache name on them.I just need cool sayings to go with it.I will use this one on one of the sticks.THANKS Quote
dutchmaster Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 Walking sticks must be popular in areas where there is no WOOD? My $0.02 worth from a different area. Quite often I've noticed/spotted a walking stick near the trailhead and until this thread I was assuming the practice was to leave your stick for the next hiker. I never bring them home. I usually pick up a good stick on my way back out from the cache, when the gpsr is stowed away and both hands are free. Depending on the time of year, a longer staff/pole is handier for vaulting over puddles, anti-soaker insurance. Sugar maple is nice but ironwood is bombproof and my favourite. dutchmaster Quote
+57chevy Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 I'm thinkin that simple one word sayings sometimes mean the most, they leave a lot to personal interpretation. Good ones for example would be, Strength, Integrity, Hope, Faith, Charity, Life, Love, Peace..... Anyhow you get the Idea. I like the avatar also by the way. Quote
+RUFFLEDOSTRICH Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Why not just FTF & th GC number or cache name that kinda makes it very unique cause it tells it all That would be what I'd want on a prize like that. I'd love to carry that to an event and use it as a conversation piece, but I'm a dork like that. Mybe even FTF, the cache name, and THEN the GC number Quote

+marvin1226 Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 How about putting your handle, FTF and cache name . Then you could give the finder the option of a quote or avitar? Quote
johndmann Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 This sounds good exept for the GC code.I wont know the code until after I place the cache and get it approved. I try to setup a cache before I place it. Doing this (just don't check the active button when setting up the cache) will give you a GC#### number to use. I do like the idea of the GC#### number, but it does take extra work for the cache placer. Quote

+CarlfromOH Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 (edited) I still like the sig of one of the contributors in the forums. It goes something like: "Don't mess with geocachers. They know the best places to hide a body." Edited February 9, 2006 by CarlfromOH Quote
Dino Hunters Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 Helen Keller - "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing." Wanted to confirm this quote so I googled it. Came to quotationspage dot com and then did some searches. Louis L'Amour - "The trail is the thing, not the end of the trail." Horace - "Remember when life's path is steep to keep your mind even." Frank A Clark - "If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere." Hosea Ballou - "Weary the path that does not challenge." There are likely more available as well. Hope this helps. DH Quote

+Tharagleb Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 I haven't read all the responses to the OP but I just got a hat out of a cache that had knitted into it the name of the cache and "First to Find". That was way cool, no need to have my name on it, I know who I am. Quote
+wewalkthewoods Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 i like the; FTF cache name coords Quote
+halffast Posted February 11, 2006 Author Posted February 11, 2006 From the last few suggestions it looks like I need more sticks.I would really like to put the coords on them and leave a certificate but how many cachers would make a trip to Colville to find the stick a couple weeks later??????? I will leave it as they are with the cache name & FTF & a cool little saying. If the FTF would like the Coords or GC # or even their ID on it we can arrange something after they have it. Quote
