+dino-irl
I'm specifically after a leather mobile-phone type cover for an Etrex Legend and a handlebar mount for the same. I'll also need a PDA Mount for the car shortly something along the lines of this which I use for the GPSr. There seem to be quite a few sites out there offering these so I would appreciate some pointers from satisfied customers. +Kitty Hawk
I got one of those with my PDA/GPS bundle from globalpositioningsystems.com. Recharger/car mount Quote Link to comment
+dino-irl
Wow! That's a neat piece of kit. Am I reading it right that it has an Inbuilt GPSr? How good is it? So far I'm picking up that it has GPSr, PDA Mount, Power supply, speaker and as it's a suction mount it's transferrable between vehicles. All for £80....pity I didn't spot this before Xmas Quote Link to comment
+shay_m
I've used these http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Westwind-Aviation for etrex case and dash mount, actually go my Vista C off them too. They also have a handlebar mount. Quote Link to comment
Moss Trooper
Have a look at Ram Mounts here. They cover just about everything.. I got a mount for my Quad and Pda from them.. Moss T Quote Link to comment
+Stuey
Wow! That's a neat piece of kit. Am I reading it right that it has an Inbuilt GPSr? How good is it? Yes, it does have an in-built GPSr. I know two people with them, and they are very good. Quote Link to comment
+Sue and Bernie
You'll need a very long cable to enable you to use Memory-Map in the field! Quote Link to comment
NickPick
Re: the mobile phone type cover: I use a case from my old Siemens C25 - it's exactly the right size, the clear front lets you see the screen reasonably well, and the earpiece perforations sit right over the antenna. It doesn't seem to affect reception. I made some modifications by cutting holes in the sides where the elastic covers the buttons. And it only cost me £1 from a local market. Quote Link to comment
+dino-irl
Yes, it does have an in-built GPSr. I know two people with them, and they are very good. I really like this piece of kit. I think it may be the one piece solution that I'm after to transform my PDA into an in-car navigation system. Can it be used out of the car though? I realise it might be a bit bulky but if the actual holder can be removed from the swan neck and the GPS is powered off the PDA battery then I'm definitely sold on it. Quote Link to comment
+Jonovich
Be aware that you probably will not be able to use the cover and the handlebar mount at the same time! This is the case with my Old Yella Etrex. Certainly not if you use Garmin Accessories and don't start cutting holes in the back of the cover! Jon Quote Link to comment
+Mr Nibbler
There's any number of cases for the etrex range on ebay (£6.99 including postage) - I splashed out and bought a garmin case (£12.95 excluding postage)when I got my GPS - and very good it is too. Quote Link to comment
+Stuey
Can it be used out of the car though? As far as I am aware, it is in-car only. Quote Link to comment

I'm getting confused bewteen MMC and CF and SD.....too many acronyms and options oh, and the model number is 3870 Edited January 3, 2006 by dino-irl Quote Link to comment
+tteggod trackers
yes ipaq takes sd cards. mmc cards are in mobile phones ,you will find that any sd slot will read an mmc card but not vice versa. Quote Link to comment

+Kitty Hawk
You'll need a very long cable to enable you to use Memory-Map in the field! Yeah, but its much easier getting back to the car Quote Link to comment

Dino Sorry, I actually posted the wrong link, I didn't notice the one in the link had built in GPS. I do have the same mount/recharger unit, but without the GPS built in. The GPSr I use is a separate unit that communicates with the PDA via bluetooth. In the car, it has TomTom on an SD card so I have in car sat nav. I can then change the SD card for the one with memory map loaded on and use it out in the field with the little GPS thingy in my pocket It's theoretical so far, becuase I haven't loaded the waypoints onto memory map yet, but it sounds good. I just need an Otter Box to protect my PDA in the wild, but I obviously wasn't good enough last year. Santa - pah! Adrian Quote Link to comment

One thing I noticed after I got one - there are fast and slow cards - can any of the experts here give an opinion on SD card speed? Worth the extra or not much difference? Quote Link to comment

+dino-irl
Sorry, I actually posted the wrong link, I didn't notice the one in the link had built in GPS. No worries, I'm glad you did otherwise I never would have known it existed I do have the same mount/recharger unit, but without the GPS built in. The GPSr I use is a separate unit that communicates with the PDA via bluetooth. I'm still toying with that idea but it's gonna work out a good bit more expensive than the mount with the in-built GPS. In the car, it has TomTom on an SD card so I have in car sat nav. I can then change the SD card for the one with memory map loaded on and use it out in the field with the little GPS thingy in my pocket This is the advantage that the BT GPS has over the one above. However, mapping in Ireland is pretty limited and my main requirement is for in-car navigation. The BT might be stretching the budget a little too far for no real advantage. It's theoretical so far, becuase I haven't loaded the waypoints onto memory map yet, but it sounds good. I just need an Otter Box to protect my PDA in the wild, but I obviously wasn't good enough last year. Santa - pah! Forget Santa. He's so 2005....I'm working on the Easter Bunny from now on Quote Link to comment
+dino-irl
I got one of those with my PDA/GPS bundle from globalpositioningsystems.com. Recharger/car mount Grrrr....I ordered one of those and it arrived yesterday. I'm having great problems getting the GPS to communicate with my iPAQ. The lack of instructions that came with the mount is diabolical and I'm being forced to trawl through newsgroups to find out how to get it working. Arkon (the manufacturers) seem worse than useless when it comes to support! Not pleased. I have a feeling I'll be contacting the supplier for a returns number and going down the BT GPS route after all Quote Link to comment
