Stupid Question About Gpx And Loc With Garmin...

Recommended Posts

If you have MapSource 6.5 or later, you can do GPX; 6.9 handles LOC. I got 6.02 with my Garmin Quest and downloaded the free patch to update it to 6.9, and have imported several LOC files with no difficulty at all.

An additional followup question, are the notes and hints imported to your Garmin unit as well? You can actually view that information on your Garmin unit?

I'm not sure if you can do that when you open the GPX/LOC file in Mapsource. I use GSAK to deal with my GPX files and it formats the hint and the other info I want into the notes field of my Garmin 60c. You should look into the GSAK software. Its really nice and has tons of features. www.gsak.net

Do yourself a favor - get GSAK. You can try out GSAK free - in fact you can use it free forever if you want to do so. After a while you get a nag screen but you can still use it. I tried it out and paid the $28 to register it. It's the most useful thing you will find for your GPSr.

Since you are a premium member you can do a Pocket Query. The site will send you a file and you just drag it onto the GSAK icon and it unzips automagically. Then you tell GSAK to send it to your GPSr and you end up with all the caches loaded into the machine.

You don't get the hints, logs, etc. The GPSr only allows so many characters of data to be stored. GSAK will let you decide what data to send but the number of characters that will display is very limited.

GPX files have much better info than LOC files.

I saw something about a "Pocket Query" when I signed up as a member. Honestly, finding WHAT or HOW to work with the membership benefits is a challenge. Prior to your post, I really wasn't for sure what a Pocket Query was. Now, if I just figure out how to create and download them. ;)

The Geocaching.com crew really needs needs an informative page clearly explaining what member benefits ARE and HOW to use them.
