Well, I started a poll on the ncgeocachers.org website and got some interesting responses. So what do you carry when you are out and about caching? Amateur Radio??? FRS??? GMRS???

Never without a cell phone, for emergency and 'phone-a-friend' applications. Most calls are incoming but it's a comfort to know I can get emergency help, if needed. Only use the FRS when at an event.

I carry my Icom IC-T8A Hand Held and my Cell Phone.

Have also used FRS if I'm caching with Non-Ham friends.

Well i find my HT (VX-7R) ham radio much more reliable then the cell phone but I carry both with me when caching.

Sometimes I pack a 14 channel GMRS/ FRS radio, but doubt it would help, it's only to talk to whoever is with me.

Cell phone and a very big stick. If I have problems, the cell phone will get a message for help. If one of the kids gets out of hand, the big stick gets the message across to shape up! LOL!

Always have my cell phone and occasionally an FRS radio if I'm searching an area that my allow for seperation from caching partners.

Cell phone, if anything. Never had the need for an FRS radio, although perhaps at an event I could see its usefulness. When I'm caching with friends we stick together so nothing more than the nod of a head or a slightly raised voice is necessary.

I always have a cell phone as I frequently cache alone. If there is a chance of meeting up with another cacher, we coordinate with FRS or cell phones.

Cell Phone and HT (Kenwood TH-6, tri bander, which also gives me weather alerts, plus is small and lightweight but still puts out 5 watts on each band) N3ORX

Nextel, Motorola cell phone, with built in 2way radio, that also works off the cell networks, I belive it uses GMRS for off network use, goes up to about 10miles. Operates internationally while on network. It does not cost much either.

I also carry a VX7R ham radio and well as an FRS radio and cell phone. My girl freind carries her cell phone and VX150 ham radio

We always have cell phones with us and since we cache as a pair together we have FRS radios with us as well. We use them a lot, even when relatively close by, because it surprising how even just 50 to 100ft away from each other its impossible to see the other person or locate their voices precisely in the woods. Has kept us from separating accidentally several times.

We usually take our FRS radios so the Mrs. and I can stay in touch should be get into a situation where she doesn't want to go any further. For example, a lot of times she won't want to bushwhack so I'll leave her on the trail and carry on solo.

FRS radios in the nearby forests - no cell coverage anyway. We're both hard headed and often make different navigating decisions. We're supposed to meet "at the cache", or failing that at the car. The radios help make that a more comfortable way to cache 'together'.
