+TEAM RETRIEVER
My wife and I will be coming down to Myrtle Beach in early April, on a golf vacation. We'll be celebrating our first wedding anniversary. Was wondering if anyone suggest a really good cache in the area. Not going to spend too much time searching for caches, but would like to find one really good one in a different state (smile)! Quote Link to comment
+DiskDevil
I think the caches at the old Air Force Base are really good. Crystal Lake Cache( GCJJ25 ) is a nice walk and usually is well stocked. If you like drive-by caches there are loads of them here, but be warned, check the logs before you waste your time on a missing pill bottle. Happy Caching!!! Quote Link to comment
+tands
The Atalaya Cache located at Huntington Beach State Park, was very hard for us and fun. There are many good caches at the State Parks at Myrtle Beach. - T of TandS Quote Link to comment
+Deliveryguy428
If you are looking for park-n-grabs, Geo13 has some down there. If your more toward the middle of MB and not up toward North Myrtle. Then I do suggest the ones at the Air Force Base Quote Link to comment
+wimseyguy
Vereen Memorial Gardens was one of the best I have ever found, period. (and I have found a few.. ) PS I just gotta add that you are one lucky dude; a wife who likes to golf and go caching!! But um, what will you do to get away from it all......? +lissie
I agree with tands on the Atalaya Cache at Huntington Beach. There are a couple of other caches also in that state park but the house, history and grounds there are amazing. You could spend hours there just taking in the history and beauty of the place. Myrtle Beach State Park also has a few nice caches as well as the old Air Force Base that DiskDevil mentioned. I never ventured far enough north to do Vareen Memorial Gardens. I will have to add that one to my own to do list. Quote Link to comment
+TEAM RETRIEVER
Thanks everyone! I'll add some of these to my watchlist and have to find a few while we're down there. Would really like to find a good cache on the old Air Force base!!!! I was stationed at Shaw AFB (up near Sumter, SC) in the early '90's and we visited Myrtle Beach quite a bit. I remember when they closed the Myrtle Beach base. Quote Link to comment

+TEAM RETRIEVER
Since I want to do some GEOCACHING in SOUTH CAROLINA (keeping it topic related...LOL!), what are they using the old base for now? Can anyone just drive right in? Quote Link to comment
+jamrasc
There's lots of housing in there, several parks, including dog park, soccer fields, etc. Yes, any one can go in there. There are quite a few caches there that are good. MB State Park has around 4 or 5 really good ones too...ammo cans! Like others have said, there are plenty of drive-up micros in just about every shopping center and many restaurants. Quote Link to comment
+shawhh
i'll second vereen memorial gardens. very well done. several nice walks in mbsp. atalaya is also worth the hunt. just down the road in georgetown, s.c. i enjoyed a days worth of looking around that area as well. lots of history and a picturesque town. -harry Quote Link to comment
+Sarg863
I agree with the others the Old Air Force Base is a really neat place to get a few. I particularly liked the Old Campground cache and the ARC was cool. Quote Link to comment
+slowstarter
CENTER YOUR SEARCH AND DIVIDE MB INTO TWO PARTS I DIVIDE AT WELCOME TO MB SIGN ON SOUTH END SHOULD BE ABLE TO PICK UP 10 TO 12 IN 2 HOURS THE ONE AT MUGGLER PARK IS REALLY GOOD Edited December 27, 2005 by slowstarter Quote Link to comment
+sis
while i found vereen memorial gardens a memorable cache; i thought avian island #1 (gca19) was even better. if you try it, be sure to stop at the mailbox in the sand to read, rest, and add to it. vereen and avian are both "must does" in my book. Mvillian
I would suggest "Down On Ocean Blvd." GCMRGV you will likely go very near it anyway Quote Link to comment
+JHutch
My all-time favorite is the Vereen Memorial Gardens Cache. There are two recent additions in this park: I Could Use A ? Right Now and The New Knot Hole Cache - three fun caches in one great park bordering the Intercoastal Waterway. Quote Link to comment
+2by2
I like the old Air force base. I am a little partial, since I have placed of couple of those caches. Within the area, you can find quite a few caches. One of the best is Take Off. It is not really hard, but you can sit for a while and watch the planes take off from Myrtle Beach International Airport. Quote Link to comment
Fenderstrat72
One of the best is Take Off I got that one last year. Besides I to am partial to the old base also. I spent 7 years of my career there. Here is a photo of the A-10 that is located at the front gate only this was taken during DS1. Edited January 29, 2006 by Fenderstrat72 Quote Link to comment
DAD-DONT-GET-US-LOST
check my gallery to see some pics from Myrtle. The only cache I would be careful on is the park in the middle of town. All we found were homeless people creeping around behind us. All we found was a drug pipe where the cache was supposed to be. The state park had a really good one. Had to walk out on a foot bridge over a swamp. I have a pic of that one in the gallery. We're from WV and had a good time. We tried to cache at least once every day. Quote Link to comment

+bahama97
Will you be driving down on I-95? I know of some quick ones very close to the Interstate in Smithfield, NC. Quote Link to comment
+TEAM RETRIEVER
Sorry I haven't checked this thread up until now. I trip is getting close (only a couple of weeks) and I thought I would bump this to the top. Oh, and no, we won't be coming down I-95. Quote Link to comment
