+Thot Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 (edited) Off and on I email someone through the gc.com system who sends a reply that doesn't let me know which cacher is replying. Almost everyone leaves the subject in the reply so, for example, I send SkyWalker an email and two weeks later I get a reply that reads like this: To: meFrom: John Johnson <johnj@foobar.com> Subject: Re: [GEO] Thot contacting you from Geocaching.com I'll do that. Thanks. John Since I only know these people by their caching name I don't know who's replying. If they leave my original message in the reply I can usually figure it out, but often they don't, so I don't know who's writing me. I propose the automated Subject line be changed to include the name of the recipient as in addition to the sender. Something like this: [GEO] Thot contacting SkyWalker from Geocaching.com The odds are high the recipient will leave the original subject in the reply and it becomes possible to know which cacher is writing (replying to) you. +Stuey Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 Great idea! I have that problem as well from time to time.
+Thrak Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 I have the same problem. Folks will send me email regarding a post I made and I have no idea what the post was or who the person sending the mail is.
+DavidMac Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 I like this suggestion. It also makes searching for specific messages by cacher easier. Say I were to email Thot and get a reply, the subject line reads as above. If I'm looking back through my email for the message a few days later, it's hard to find.
+The Leprechauns Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 It's working great, isn't it? Thanks, Groundspeak, for the quick fix!
+Tharagleb Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 FWIW this fixes the Gmail thread problem (wherein every email I generate from GC.com has the subject "Tharagleb contacting you from GC.com" and gets threaded together). Now gmail will thread based on Tharagleb/recipient combination, this helps a lot!
+fishingdude720 Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 (edited) sorry Edited December 30, 2005 by fishingdude720
+ODragon Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 Mines has always worked like this: {Snip} Mind removing my personal e-mail addy and AIM from the above please...
+Jeremy Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 I removed your email. Fishingdude should probably remove his as well.
+The Leprechauns Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 And in any event, it has not "always" worked like the example just posted. Until this month, it said "[GEO] ODragon contacting you from Geocaching.com" so that when you got a return message, you had to stop and think "who was the 'you' that I was contacting?" It is nice not to have to do that anymore.
+Ambrosia Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 The problem that we have with that, is we have four geocaching accounts on the same outlook. People will send cryptic messages that don't say who they're contacting, and the automated thingy from gc.com does not specify which user is being emailed. This can cause confusion in our household.
+Pasha Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 The change is lovely. The only thing left is to go back and change all those emails I already have in Gmail. Jeremy, you can do that, right? I have supreme confidence.
+ShowStop Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 Its the little things that really make a huge difference. Thanks for the update!

Either I'm blind, or this has changed. Our emails do show the name of the person that it was sent to. Whew.

Yes, it's been that way for a few weeks now, in response to the original suggestion, for which I'm most grateful. So that is why I said thank-you in my prior post.
+Thot Posted January 2, 2006 Author Posted January 2, 2006 Yes, it's been that way for a few weeks now, in response to the original suggestion, for which I'm most grateful. So that is why I said thank-you in my prior post. Yes, yes. I should have added my thanks before now. This unworthy pig apologizes and thanks you again.
+ChileHead Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 I like the new subject line. Something else that would be useful, is when contacting a cacher allow the selection of one of their caches in a drop down box. Often I'll get email from somebody saying "I looked for your cache and couldn't find it. Can you give me a hint?" Uh, what cache? Might be nice to have a cache selected, if applicable.
+BigFurryMonster Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Thanks for this change! Sometimes, small improvements make life so much better. Can the same trick be pulled for the email subject "Topic Subscription Reply Notification" ? Put the name of the topic in the email subject, so they don't get clustered anymore. Or do people prefer them clustered?
+Jeremy Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 No. Unfortunately we don't edit the forum software since someone else developed it. We're already running into issues with upgrading the software so we can restore functionality, due to the integration of the forums with the geocaching.com web site.
