Snoogans
Yeah. I had ammo can ghosts on my first trip back home to Mammoth after I started geocaching. Lots of elevation change. I just leave the containers cracked while traveling now. Quote Link to comment
altosaxplayer
Hmmmm...... Never had that happen to me before Quote Link to comment
TeamVilla5
EEEK! I'm such an "excitable little critter" (my hubby's fave description) I'd have to change undies every single time! Happy Caching! Lori V. TeamVilla5 Quote Link to comment
The Psion
Hehehe, ghosts! I go the third or fourth (depending on which study you look at) most haunted college in the country. I'm suprised the cahce (also an ammo can) on our land hasn't started to do weird things, guess I'll have to go down there some night and take a look! Quote Link to comment
Renegade Knight
I've got something like 40 ammo cans here and there and no ghosts. Quote Link to comment
Hoosier Katie
I am so glad I read this thread! I just got my first shipment of ammo cans today!! I have never even seen one before. You should have seen me opening the first one Since my husband is out of town, I am heading right over to open all the tops right now! I don't think ammo can ghosts are what Zeke (the cat) and I need right now!!! Quote Link to comment

Pablo Mac
I once found an ammo can cache in the woods because of this phenomenon. I was almost ready to give up the search and was reaching for where I had hung my GPSr on a branch when I heard a "POP!" at my feet. After regaining my composure, I found the can neatly hidden under the roots of the tree. If the ammo can ghost hadn't decided to signal me then and there, I don't know if I would have ever found the cache! Quote Link to comment
sept1c_tank
You can kill the ghosts by drilling a hole in the can; this allows the ghost to visit his favorite haunts, thus reducing all that pent up popping. Quote Link to comment
Jhwk
PV=nRT A puzzle post? pressure, temp, and volume have different relationships. If you hold one constant, and change another, the third will react based on this relationship. For instance, pressure and temperature have a direct relationship if you hold the volume constant (as in the case of the ammo can). So as the temperature in the room increases (increasing the temp of the air in the can) the pressure of the gas in the can will increase. because the ammo can has some flex, it is my assumption that as the temps change in the room the pressure in the can is increasing and decreasing and the ammo can is pinging. +sTeamTraen
If you've ever made home-made jam or other preserves, you can find out how the factory gets the "seal is safe" button to go down. You put the jam in hot, screw on the lid, and when it cools down, the button goes down with a satisfying little "pop". It also means that you have a good seal and your preserves will keep for a long time. So, I guess a popping ammo box means never having to say you're soggy. Quote Link to comment
SharpShin'
One of the posts in response to the original.......(By Skunk Ape) Posts: 644 Sometimes just out of the corner of my eye I see a small dark shape dart about the room. I turn my head and look real quick, but by the time I do, it's gone. Sometimes I think they go into the fireplace, but I looked up there and didn't see anything. I figured they were ghosts. They don't seem to hurt anything, so I try to ignore them now. Maybe they are coming from my ammo cans. I think maybe I will throw out the cans. John Quote Link to comment
treasure_hunter
I think this may be your ghost! Quote Link to comment
Prfctly Mad
Although I have never had this happen, It is good to know. I keep about 10 ammo boxes in my trunk. Now if I hear it I won't start a war when driving through the bad parts of town. Edited December 8, 2005 by Prfctly Mad Quote Link to comment
olbluesguy
Years ago I had a friend who was a pilot. He used to fly dead bodies back to their home towns an occasion. He had some stories to tell about strange sounds in his airplane due to pressure changes. Quote Link to comment
Bluesman63
Have not heard one "pop" yet. On a cache I found in Idaho, I had the lid blow open when I released the latch with a loud gush of air. Scared the you know what out of me! Quote Link to comment
CYBret
I know this is an old thread but this just happened on the shelf behind me! I about jumped out of my skin when I heard it. And then the first thing I remembered was this thread! See how helpful the forums are!!! Still...it was weird. Bret Quote Link to comment
