My First Cache

Recommended Posts

You need your own webspace to save the pictures / music to (although you can upload the pictures to your geocaching.com profile)

Then you need to add the pictures to the page using HTML. Good tutorial on HTML here.

If you're not that experienced with html, then you can always borrow it from someone else's cache page.

The background picture will need the following HTML:

<body bgcolor="#74914f" background="http://yourspace/yourpicture.jpg" leftmargin="0" topmargin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0">

A picture on the page will need:

<img src="http://www.yourspace.co.uk/images/picture.gif" ALT "What you want to show when you point at the picture">

The music will be:

<bgsound src="http://www.yourspace.co.uk/yourmusic.mid" loop="99">

and you'll need to tick the "Descriptions are HTML box on the edit cache page.

Do bear in mind though that a lot of people don't like too many pictures as they take a long time to download (especially on the PDA in the field), and those of us who browse from work don't like the music too much.

What do others think about the inclusion of Music on cache pages?

If it's necessary, add a button to turn the music on (like my and Ullium's cache "The Musical Box").

Cache pages that play music automatically are just annoying!

There is now a "Background Image URL" input box so you don't need the "background" html line in the code any more (it's discouraged, in fact).

Upload your images to the cache page (keeps it tidy and working) backgrounds as stated above can be put in a separate box. Ensure you image tiles well simply pauls missing cacher background is a good example as are two of opurs let battle commence and krystal bday bonus.

For good use of pictures have a look at any simply paul cache page.

To see how the entire page is constructed just use view source in internet explorer (sorry dont know firefox)

Music is a nono especially when browsing at work !!

nice subtle cache promotion there Mark, although you forgot to link to them.. Again, apologies for thread-jacking, but I think the OP has been answered anyway. I'm not a music fan on websites - I can't get sound at work, so that's not a problem, but on the other hand, if its essential to the cache, then I can't tell that. A link is much preferred, IMHO.

Maybe its one of those fads that will pass out of fashion. B)

Yes, why do you want to spice up the listing? Personally I think the more simple the better. It is also worth noting that some more tags (including those for sound) appear to be removed now. Jeremy posted why somewhere in the announcements section of the forums.

I think you're right. Music will still play on the older caches.... at least, until they're edited , it will. I don't believe that you can put music on a new cache page anymore.... Thankfully!!!

If the question is how do I jazz this listing my answer is don't bother, it is great already.

Just went and actually had a look.

Nicely laid out and easy to read

Great description

Nice bit of history but not too much to read in one go

Clues well spaced to allow people to type / write notes as they do the cache you could possibly add some C=_____ to the page to make this even easier but as said above nowt wrong with the cache page.

Im planning some MK caches soon shall add it to the list.

MUSIC

Firstly there is a problem in that Jeremy and TPTB have decided that only old fashioned Kosher HTMLv4 code is allowable and its all stuck through a code checker. So the IE5 BGSOUND tag has become a DNF as far as music is concerned on all new pages ( dont edit a page and the BGSOUND tag remains ).

The HTMLv4 EMBED tag is not properly supported because it was one of the TAGs for ever scheduled for the axe - however there are workarounds which I have had to use.

As for whether MUSIC is appropriate in a listing: well its one of the tools available to the setter for clues particularly in puzzle caches. Just banging out muzak for the sake of it is pretty pointless but I for one was narked when the BGSOUND tag was no longer supported as for one of my caches ( and only one ) it had proven a valuable clue to get geocachers set on solving the puzzle. There are several music caches which rely on music ( obviously ).

So good luck in getting your cache pages looking pretty and singing sweet.

 *in a still, small voice*

I just want to say that I like the music/sound effects on one or two caches that I've come across accidentally. I think they can "set the atmosphere" of a cache very well, if used judiciously.

Never be afraid to voice your opinion Mrs B. After all, the worst that can happen is that we will all laugh at you, ridicule your ideas, and constantly remind you off such foolish thoughts, ad infinitum…. B)

j/k! B)

PS, I did say that for some caches where music is integral to the cache, then obviously its fine – but I maintain that a link is better. Should someone hard of hearing be reading the cache page, they may not realise that there are further ‘clues’.

Thinks to self - thats a good point, does the handicaching site include deafness?

We aimed to follow the guidelines for US Section 508 (and although untested should be close to or at compliance for European Union Priority 1). I'm not sure if this covers your concern or not. See hermish.com for more info.

What a bunch of grumpy old gits

Way to go to encourage a new cache setter!

No, sorry, don't think we are having a go. If the question is how do I jazz this listing my answer is don't bother, it is great already.

Missed your post somehow Alistair. Didn't focus on anyone in particular - just questioned the overall reaction to the OP.

Just trying to be impartial and nothing else.
