Airmapper
I always have what I don't need when I want it, and what I want when I don't need it. Ummm.... GPS's (2 of em') Compass (Use it rarely) Extra caches. Logs (But never have them when I get to a cache that needs one.) Pen/ Pencil (A must have item) And a bunch of other junk I find I didn't need. (If your thinking I'm not a good example your exactly correct, this is a what not to do post To tell you the truth this post may be useful to me as well.) BTW, welcome to the forums and to Geocaching. You'll find this is your new use for spare time. It is also addictive. [EDIT to add] Batteries!!!!! never leave home without them!!! +Jester2112
I also carry all the items listed above in my pack plus a couple of pre-made micro caches and also at least one pre-made regular cache. +Team Neos
Good question. I have found myself not prepared to help out a fellow cacher now and then and have been trying to make sure that I can restock a cache from what I carry with me--so that when I find a cache 2 miles into the woods I can just fix it, instead of just logging that it needs to be done. With a little creative packing, I can carry all the things below without feeling too loaded down. Urban caching: trade items -several small and at least one fairly nice GPS PDA small flashlight spare batteries hand sanitizer extra baggies in a larger pill bottle small notebook or pieces of paper for emergency logs extra pencil stubs in a film canister ink pen pocket knife small digital camera a few laminated copies of CyBret's geocachingU cards and pamphlets (Funny story--I need to restock these!-- I gave my last one to CyBret himself yesterday!) to give to policmen, interested bystanders, and property owners I also have a lanyard with a compass, a whistle, a smaller flashlight, and a multitool that I wear around my neck For more extensive trips: trekking pole(s)--have two and use them both in really rough places larger backpack that can hold more trade items --for a long hike to 4-5 caches more supplies to repair caches gloves extra socks thermal/reflective blanket and the trunk of the car has: emergency change of clothes for two blankets a box of trade items to refill packs ammo cans--some ready to set out and some empty bottled water Quote Link to comment
q22q17
Here in SoCal we are also into stickers, the little return address label kind that you can make using Avery labels on the computer. It makes powercaching easier and quicker, but I also always bring my own pen, and almost never use the one in the cache. Other than that, hiking pole, Nike trail hikers, a hat with a wide brim, sunscreen, chapstick, GPS, and oh yea, my husband. AND WATER. Edited November 20, 2005 by q22q17 Quote Link to comment
badlands
Add to the lists above a small hand towel, a golf towel works great. Too many caches are poorly constructed and are damp, taking on water, or full of water [had one of those yesterday - full to the top]. Quote Link to comment

Rich the Bushwhacker
I keep it simple. Just my GPS and my Palm loaded with cachemate if it's under 2 miles roundtrip. Over 2 miles, I'll carry water and a bagel in a pocket. I usually forget the pen, which is an item you should always carry. Today I forgot and had to do two roundtrips to a cache so I could sign the log. Quote Link to comment

Miragee
I also carry all the items listed above in my pack plus a couple of pre-made micro caches and also at least one pre-made regular cache. You just never know when you'll turn a corner and find a perfect place for a new hide. Yup . . . I do that also. Yesterday I went caching in a different area and placed three more caches . . . I carry a lot of the stuff mentioned by others, but I also carry tweezers. Sometimes a micro log just won't come out of the container . . . Of course, they also come in handy for getting out those nasty cactus spines, or splinters, or . . . . Quote Link to comment
MolinoExplorer
3. S&W .38 spl For dispersing and scattering mugglers? Quote Link to comment
