+Chuy!
Harmon, if you noticed we drove from Sunrise Hwy all the way south to I8 on Thing Valley Rd. That's 'cause someone cut off the lock at the mid gate. I called the Border Patrol Campo Station to inform them. They said they arrested five guys on the 1st trying to cut the gate, and they were in DEA custody. They wouldn't tell me more about the arrests, but DEA's specialty is enforcing illegal drug laws. BP was surprised to hear the gate was unlocked again. I also called the Forest Service. They also corroborated the BP account of the arrests, and they too, were surprised to hear the gate remained unlocked. That road appears to be a popular route for smugglers! Excellent collage Trailgators. Edited December 4, 2005 by Chuy Quote Link to comment

+SD Rowdies
Harmon, if you noticed we drove from Sunrise Hwy all the way south to I8 on Thing Valley Rd. They also corroborated the BP account of the arrests, and they too, were surprised to hear the gate remained unlocked. That road appears to be a popular route for smugglers! Excellent collage Trailgators. Chuy, Thank's for the information. Yes, often a vehicle chase came right by Sandy Creek Ranch. Once we had a shootout right at the gate and another time the fleeing truck spun out and into the bank near SCCC #4. The wild west is still alive and exciting out that way. Most people have no idea of how many illegals come through that region. Ranchers are armed and ready out that way. There's a major foot trail beyond the ridge just west of the ranch that the coyotes use to hoof around the checkpoints. Funny part of that foot trail is that it leads right through the huge herd of bulls that are kept in the valley between Kitchen Creek Road and Thing Valley Road. That's my belief that those road gates, especially the newer ones, are locked for three useful reasons. One reason is to reduce rescue workload for the Sheriff's Department, another to restrict illegals from bypassing the I-8 and Old 80 checkpoints, and finally to restrict drug-running traffic from using the dirt roads to bypass the checkpoints. Occasionally those mountain roads are used to dump bodies so the gates tend to keep the drops near Old 80. Bodies were found quite near Sandy Creek Ranch on two occasions. You enjoyed a rare chance to drive the length of Thing Valley Road. Mostly we rode the ranch horses when we made our Geocaching finds so that the road gates were no bother. The east end of road near the road gate is a place that one can always see the tracks of Mountain Lions. The lions frequent the cattle herds of Thing Valley Ranch, especially during calving time. All the resident ranchers have keys to road gates that affect their property. That sort of gate will be locked with interlinked locks so that many agencies can open their own lock to open the gate. +SD Rowdies
Congratulations to all of you that scored Snail Rock Cache. I'll share a little secret with you now that you've done it, I knew you could and would do it easily. However, the problem is that you've made the accomplishment seem ordinary whereas once it was notable. Lord knows I've tried my best to teach you the fine art of cowboy exaggeration but no, not all caught on. I beseech you to punch-up your log-entry prose to build up the legend of Snail Rock. Many thanks to all of you that have enjoyed the Sandy Creek Cowboy caches of late. Due to the driving distance and to the uncalled-for high gasoline prices those caches have been mighty lonely. Please know that your many log entries are greatly appreciated. We put some time and effort into those hides and it's nice to know that you enjoyed them. What's really special is that many of you enjoyed them together. Harmon Quote Link to comment
