This events thread (I already moved it to here) ;)

For a minute there, I thought you wanted to merge the SDC Events' thread with some master Events' thread. Thanks for clearing things up; I can sleep better tonight :laughing: .

Seems moving the thread was an event in itself.

 

As long as we're talking events... anybody want to come up to Nevada late July for a 2 day trek across the ET highway? This would include several 15-20 mile treks off the main highway and an overnight camping stop. Start Tonopah on a Saturday AM, end at Hwy 93 @ I-15 late Sunday. We will have an RV or two as a mobile home base and high clearance vehicles for the off highway adventures. Details in process.

Has anyone explored the Arroyo Tapiado Mud Caves? I have taken the Bandits out there a few times we had a blast exploring the caves. I was thinking of getting a group together for a day of exploring. Here are coords. There are a lot of caches out there. N 32 55.630 W 116 11.706

The ET highway is higher elevation than Las Vegas, and a bit cooler up there. However, the sun is intense so hats are needed. Of course, if the San Diego folks are wienies, I can understand that too.

 

And there are casinos around, but not on the planned route.

There are five in Horsethief I need plus the two by Miragee across Lyons due west of the staging area. And tnen there are the two by CTYankee up on Gaskill, I don't know if I'll time for them two. These may fun to 4X4; John driving down the FJ? Has he figured out how to NOT bottom out :D .

No, I'm not driving the FJ (yes I still bottom it our sometimes...), I wouldn't have much of a weekend..... I'm flying in afrter work Friday night!! I think Jodi and I will be meeting you Sunday morning early (0600). :D

I just wanted to add that the Border Field SP is closed to dogs the last time I was there, unless of course they are in your car.

 

Yes, dogs are not allowed in the State Park in any manner :) , there are a number of protected species out there to include the Least Tern and the Snowy Plover as well as Indian Burial grounds and even private property within the park {Lichey Mesa} :anicute: . Also the park has been closed to vehicle traffic for quite some time because of flooding {sewage :D } down near the park mesa itself comming from Yogurt Canyon. Although parking at the main gates and walking/biking during normal hours shouldn't be a problem as long as the signs are observed for the revegatation areas. If you figure a north/south line right at the main gate anything west of that is state park area and then anything east of that is county parks and recreation area {dogs welcome on a leash :) } minus any private farms out that way.

And 6a is late for us; we've started at 0530 in the past.

 

See, I needs to return home at a respectable hour for chores and such. Noon'ish is my usuall cut-off; so, the sooner we start caching, the mo caches Ginger! and I can visit :) .

:D No, it's closed to vehicles. Hike only. It's on Lyons Valley Road near Lake Barrett Honor Camp.

Thanks for the offer of a ride, Chuy, but if I go, I will drive me. I'm not sure if Splashman is on call again this weekend, but if he is, he can't go. $kimmer is in LV and doesn't do hikes anyhow, so it will probably be just moi, :anicute:

Sooooo, this is a definite 'maybe', until I see what Splashman is up to. I will be there at 5:55 am or earlier if I go, so don't wait for me if I'm not there by then.

Oh, are we going to do all of those caches in Horsethief? I've only done the original by Nighthunter a while back and some of them up top. And, are we going down the 'easy' way and coming back up the switchbacks?

Horsethief staging/parking area: N32 44.822 W116 40.133

 

Lake Jennings Park n Ride: N32 50.766 W116 52.888

 

Horsethief hike is about 4 miles; add a mile for Miragee's two caches across Lyons. There is some elevation gain to be had; a wild guess is about 800 feet total elevation. If I get a chance I plug the coords into Topo tonight or tomorrow.

Here is one Track and Profile of the Horsethief hike for the day I placed my caches. The track goes past where "Latitude 32's Treasure Trove" and "Hopalong Rides Again" were before the fire . . .

And, here is another hike I took there to go further up to BBB's caches, and up to "The Levitating Rock."

"Far Out Kitty" is up the trail further to the east from there . . .

 

The hike on the west side of the road for the other two caches is less than two miles.

Anybody interested in doing the Pushawalla Power Path Series (and surrounding caches) on Sunday, April 29th???

I'm going there in my Minivan and I can take an additional 6 people with me (although it will be more comfortable with only 5 more).

Start time between 6 and 8 am :) - returning after dark.

 

I got 1 confirmed and 1 maybe so far - anybody else interested? Contact me directly if you want to go!!!

My guess of 800 feet total elevation gain was pretty close. Looks closer to 900ft by your graphs.

 

Bring extra water; it is very warm in east county today.

No, you didn't leave me behind, I couldn't make the trip because we are doing a kitchen remodel and I couldn't run away as planned. Harmon always gets his days and years mixed up and he thought I went Sat. with you guys. We rectified the situation today and he hiked Horsethief with me. I hafta mention tho, that those pesky chicken feathers kept blowing out of his pack.......wonder why?

Oh, a few caches also fell out of his pack.......must be going around!

Y'all might want to take those backpacks back to REI and get 'em replaced with ones that don't have holes.
