+TrailGators Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 (edited) I sense some apprehension. I prefer doing caches along the coast in the summer. Last Sunday I took my son and his two friends to Oceanside for their beach volleyball practice. When I left my house in Escondido it was 104 degrees. When I got to Del Dios it was 98 degrees. As I drove through Rancho Santa Fe it had dropped down to 85 degrees. When I reached the beach it was 75 degrees! Now where would you rather spend a summer day caching?! We had a great time . . . its amazing how much you can get done before noon when you get up at 4:30 . . . For a crippled, you did alright ; you were never more than a minute or two behind, and that's probably cause you were snapping photos on the way up, nothing anyone is going to complain about . That last portion between Are You My Mother and Atop San Miguel was quite a hike. The trail was well-defined, but the brush towered us and overgrowing to the opposite sides; we coudn't see the top until the last 20 feet or so. The grade for that short 275 foot climb is 26%. The mistake I made was breaking in new hiking shoes; my feet were killing me on the descent, but, they'll be ready for El Cap . Quote
+Miragee Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Does anyone want to do just part of the Friday hike? The moon will be nearly full. It will be up early, so we will have light for the descent. I know I cannot make the entire distance , so I might want to turn around near the four-mile mark. I'll look at my map and post it to see which caches are on the first part of the trail. Quote

+Snake & Rooster Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 You crazy people be careful out there at night. There are mountain lions roaming about. That's right Redstareg; newbies, oldies - all that accept the challenge are welcomed. Besides, mtn lions prefer newbie meat . I'll recommend at least 120 oz of water. Last time, I carred an extra 50oz in a lunch bag and hid it near Gurls Turnaround cache. We didn't need it, but I felt good knowing it was there. Email me if you want to park at my house to carpool. Some of you may have missed Travalita's logs; she started this hike at midnight with a friend a few weeks back and completed it around 9a.
