The Big Bear Lake Thread

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I would like to start a thread for those of us in the mountains and anyone interested in caching this area. Even though winter is coming, we have some awesome off-road and hiking caches. Last October, we hosted a fantastic event, so keep posted here for upcoming events and fun caches.

Thanks a lot!

It's winter now. Come for the caching, stay for the skiing!!!!!!!

Big Bear is LA, San Diego and Las Vegas's backyard. People come up here for all the outdoor activities. It's an outdoor mecca for boating, fishing, skiing, hiking, biking, camping, learning history of the gold rush, spotting bald eagles and of course CACHING!

Hi Big Bear Cachers....I see there have been a few lurkers out there.....come on don't be afraid...make a post!! This is such a great way to find out whats new, post some pictures and give hints and tricks on some of the caches out there. I am a San Diego cachers also, I have gotten so much help from the San Diego Thread. We also have a couple of spin offs...."This Just in", "Caching Widows" and the "San Diego Banter", just to name a few. Just tonight they are wanting to start a new one for organized non-events, like our Thanksgiving morning mini cache-a-thon.

A good way to get the word out on this thread is to edit all your cache (placed) pages and add a line that says "Check out the Big Bear Thread". I have 3 caches up there and I'll be editing mine. Also, Blonds Run Amuck, aka B.R.A. has a new commemorative trackable smashed penny.....check it out at www.bra.geocoin.net. I'll be placing them in Big Bear Caches soon. So come on Big Bear....lets keep this thread going!!

Anyone have any exciting caching plans over the holiday?? There are a few group meet ups here in San Diego for Thursday and Friday then I hope to be in Big Bear on Saturday/Sunday. Hopefully bag a few caches :)

We've been considering making another trip to Big Bear, but were wondering if

1. 330 is open again or if we have to go around the long way, and

2. Is there snow over the caches yet?

Anyone in the know?????

Trust the SD people to keep the BB thread alive :D

If 330 is open again, we might go up for a day over the long weekend.

BTW, we enjoyed Barbed Wire while we were there last. Quit digging up bodies and put out some more caches. :D

:o LOL.....I do have a couple of new caches to put out but they are for San Diego. Check out our other new one if you go up this weekend "ledgehog". Once the snow comes the road to there will be closed for the winter.

Weather in Big Bear is cold but delightful! There is no snow yet. Some of the caches in the back areas may take some hiking because they will be closing the roads soon that lead to the back areas, but there are plenty of caches that are not in the backwoods that are a lot of fun and a real "hoot". I guess I better update my Where the Wild Wings are cache. Ran outta log space. Coords for Shut Up and Ride are a little off, but still you should find it. Everyone else did. Picnic in the Park is safe and sound and all my other caches are ready to be found by you Thanksgiving cachers. How bout you, Badgercacher?

I was in San Diego over Thanksgiving and found the caches on Coronado Island. I just LOVE the homes over there! I recently did maintenance on my caches here and placed two more. They are waiting for any visitors :ninja: It is quite chilly outside and they are making snow at the ski areas.

Hey B.R.A....I snagged one of your smashed pennies, but don't have the heart to part with it :ninja: .

Hey everyone! I've been playing with my new DVD camcorder, and I thought up the idea about recording trips to peoples caches. (For example you have a cache that doesnt get enough attention in big bear and you live in san diego, I can make a little movie about your cache, or i can film me, or you or whoever, going up to your cache so you can later give the DVDs away in caches, or to friends to get some more visits to your cache...) anyne think this is a good idea? I am planning on doing this for my Serrano Indian Overlook cache some time in the next month. If anyone is interested, post here and let me know what you want in the movie. I'm only asking for a couple bucks to cover the cost of the DVDs. (or you can buy the DVDs yourself and give them to me and I'll make them for you.)

Be patient C.A., it's hard to have a lot of banter when basically it's just me, you and the Tandemanics up here  It's kinda like talking to yourself!

I suspect that things will pick-up when Springtime rolls around!

Until then, keep throwing out your ideas and have fun!

Since we have probably found more caches in Big Bear than San Diego County, we thought we better start posting here. B)

Most of our posts go unnoticed anyway over in the San Diego threads. ;)

Thanks, Big Bear Cachers for all the great hides! We love Big Bear!

Don't make it a micro in a rock pile and maybe I'll go find it.

I believe this was discussed in socalgeocachers.com.....if you Hazzmatt, of Fishpoet wish to degrade my cache any further then please contact me by e-mail and i will tell you want i think of you cache snobs. People can play this game anyway they want, but it doesnt mean taking the fun away from other peoples caching experiences. How about you visit my cache before you make judgements on it. I will be there and I will be bringing my collection of geocoins to share. I will also be bringing my last 5 Big Bear geocoins for trade only! So, if you have a coin to trade, bring it along and well see what happens.

No measurable snow should fall this weekend.

I have no interest in driving 2 hours each way on a Monday night to cache in freezing temperatures to find nano caches hidden in rockpiles.

That's what I say!

Since when have you said that? ummmm maybe never? To clear things up my caches are not nanos. They are in a 1x1- 6'x6' foot container. It seems to me you have not even read the cache descriptions, or even gone up to the cache its self, so you shouldn't be judging what you don't even know. You two, being grown men, because i saw you at the BB cache bash, should be more mature than my 10 year old cousin. Lets grow up a little and make caching fun for everyone, because its a sport that everyone should be able to have fun at.

How many people will be able to have fun on a 5/5 needle in a rockpile hide after a hike in the forest?

Or did you really hide it in a 6 foot by 6 foot container and mismark the cache as a small?

You want to have an event on Halloween in Big Bear....then list it on gc.com

Just because you do not enjoy that kind of a hide doesnt mean that others wont. You dont have to search for a cache if you dont want to. this thread is not about my geocaches. It is about getting people together and having fun gc'ing during halloween night. Your stereotypical ratings of how good you think caches are... is just flat out ridiculous. There is not a "right type" of cache location period. (besides those which violate guidelines.) As a hider i can choose to put a cache at the top of a tree, in a stump, a rock pile, or wherever i feel fit. This arguing with you is stupid. Please grow up and have respect for others.

So who is caching for then? I believe everyone should have an equal chance to go geocaching.

And, whats the "stop hiding caches in bushes supposed to mean?"

As a finder I can choose to not look for your needle in a rockpile hides after dark on Halloween Monday with the temps close to freezing and a 2 hour drive home. Which I believe was and still is my original point that you cannot seem to grasp.

*******Everyone this is what FishPOET has said to me in the past.******** I believe this post clearly shows how rude him and Hazzmatt were (actually Hazzmatt edited all his posts with a "bump" so people couldnt see what he really wrote...) I feel this is ridicilous behavior by anyone (especially geocachers). This issue needs to be addressed. I think Hazzmatt and FishPOET need to apologize to everyone they have degraded in the geocaching community. I have had people contact me who feel the same way. I am not alone in this position. I especially liked FishPOETS respose saying I am attacking him personally, it seems he can dish it out but he can't take it. I guess I'm not much better than FishPOET of Hazzmatt by stooping to their level but this needed to be brought up. Here is the website which has the discussion posted above on it

C.A., It saddens me that this is still a problem, and I completely understand both sides, and I am NOT taking any. This is between you guys. I simply did NOT want this issue to continue on this thread that I started for the fun of geocaching in Big Bear. Please put it to rest, start your own thread, or better yet, let's just all move along.

PLEASE...I am not mad you or anyone, just didn't want this to flare up again, here.

You have some serious personality issues that you need to deal with.

It's amazing that this cacher brings up guidelines for his own defense, yet, when asked in the past if a cacher had permission to place a cache on UC property (as set forth by the Geocaching.com guidelines) he lashed out at me saying that less than 1% ever ask for permission, so why bother? Just avoid this self-proclaimed "General" and don't take what he says/demands seriously. If caching isn't performed how he likes it, no one is worth their salt. Go figure: this is supposed to be a fun game/hobby, yet people make it their own and decide for other people how we should cache. I am disappointed... can't we just find what caches we want to find without being harrassed - as long as we do it by the guidelines? :anitongue:

Is it because your name is too long? We shortened ours to Tinfoil in the forums because our real handle (Tinfoil-Hat Head & Wall-Eyed Nutbag) was too long to log in with on the system over here for some reason...

I emailed the powers that be to remedy it as well and never got a response, so I just shortened it to Tinfoil in the forums. Not sure what benefits I'm missing over here not logging in with my premium member handle though...

Sorry I'm not much help, but at least we can commiserate. ;)

GOODIE! GOODIE! We'll be up to get them! We have also been eyeing some caches you have for some moderate hikes too. We need those type of caches to work off all the holiday treats! Great views and fresh air sure beat the gym. LOL!

Isn't there a cache near a shoe tree up there? I shredded a pair of hiking boots after trekking up Heavenly Harrison, and thought they might like to retire there. I could have a ceremonial boot tossing!

If forestry road 2N10 is open, there are some great caches up there with beautiful views and EZ hikes. I don't know if you were up there during the Event.

I took my nephew out for his first cache weekend and he is TOTALLY excited about it. Does anyone know of a cache group in Ventura he can contact? Thanks.
