+Roving Rangies Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I have concluded that many cachers are caching not for fun, but at a competitive level. I cache and also visit here for information and also to give my view but most of all have fun about cache related subjects! How do you cache? Quote
+daytribe Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I cache just for fun but I have to admit to racing out last night in the pitch black to get my 1st FTF. It was freezing too. I got the FTF too! Woohoo!! Quote

I got the FTF too! Woohoo!! That's not competing, that just goes to show you are a normal caching nutter. We did our 1st FTF a few months back...and oh boy did it feel good! Quote

NickPick Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I cache for fun, but I can see that the competitive spirit can add to the fun, depending on your personality. I know that my first FTF was, for me, a great acheivement, and nervously checking the cache page to see if anyone else had bagged it added to the excitement. Quote
+daytribe Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 We did our 1st FTF a few months back...and oh boy did it feel good! It was great fun running around in the dark. I took my son with me and we occasionally saw other torches and were worried we were going to get beaten to the cache. I have noticed that some seem to be quite competitive and are racking up quite a few FTF notches on their walking sticks but now I've got one I will relax (I think, till the next new cache pops up). Quote
+Mr'D Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I would not like to presume our UK 'top' cachers do not enjoy caching, just that their enjoyment is on a different level to yours and maybe mine. I don't think competitiveness and enjoyment have to be exclusive of each other, just that their ratio is different for each and every one of us. Jon Quote
+Roving Rangies Posted November 18, 2005 Author Posted November 18, 2005 I would not like to presume our UK 'top' cachers do not enjoy caching, I am puzzled at the word OUR that you refer to? Quote
+Roving Rangies Posted November 18, 2005 Author Posted November 18, 2005 Ours as in our cachers the UK Sorry, I am a cacher of the WEB! Quote
+Satellite Kid Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 Have to admit that yesterday I did a similar thing....so a new cache pop up and rushed out for an hour and a half lunch just to get a FTF...also my first one....and it was a great feeling even if i ususlly cache for fun!! a few weeks back I was just out caching for fun and located a cache and realised I was the second to find. Hadn't intended trying to be first but when I realised I was second it did make me feel rather disappointed....a bit like Scott must have felt when he read Admunsen's letter at the south pole!! Quote
+Kitty Hawk Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 Depends what mood I'm in, depends how busy work is, depends how close to a milestone I'm at, depends on the weather a bit. depends if there's a jeep in it, depends if there a challenge, depends if it's a FTF, depends if I'm in a non cached in county, depends if I'm with non cachers. Apart from that, a league table usually spurs me on a bit. Quote
+Pharisee Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 Very definitely not serious about it any more To be honest, I rarely go out caching on my own any more because I just don't enjoy it as much as I once did. I've found just one cache so far this month and that was in London when I had to walk past it anyway. Only found 8 last month and that was on one splendid weekend in the company of Omally and Motley Crew. Quote
+Alibags Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I hate caching, I only go out to do it to punish myself. FTFs really mean something. I am in hot competeition with everybody because of the huge amounts of fame, money and kudos I will get if I find more lunchboxes in the woods then they do.... ... or not?!! Quote
+Satellite Kid Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 and kudos I will get if I find more lunchboxes in the woods then they do.... LOL!! Quote
+Alibags Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 and the pain, I mustn't forget how much I enjoy the pain Quote
+Satellite Kid Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 My Webpage yeah know about the pain!! Quote
+Kryten Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I am not at all competetive and the numbers mean nothing to me. That is why I completely changed my plans last weekend when four FTF opportunities suddenly appeared on my doorstep and also why I went out in the dark and rain when a couple of white jeeps appeared in my vicinity. +Firth of Forth Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 (edited) I have concluded that many cachers are caching not for fun, but at a competitive level.I cache and also visit here for information and also to give my view but most of all have fun about cache related subjects! How do you cache? If it wasn't fun, I certainly wouldn't be doing it. There's nothing wrong with some informal and lighthearted competitiveness. I don't think that I've yet heard of any cachers fighting over FtFs or TBs. Mostly, the competitiveness is internally driven rather than against other cachers. Edited November 18, 2005 by Firth of Forth Quote
+walkergeoff and wife Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I am not sure that there is a hobby around that is not competitive - even if the goals are set internally rather than between players. Even stamp collecting can be very competitive, to complete sets etc. The great thing about geocaching is that the competition is not confrontational, in the way it is in team sports. I got my first FTF the other day, and it gave a real buzz, but I have made a decision not to go for every new cache that comes up - and this is not a critcism of those for whom this is a real attraction of geocaching. I am fired up by numbers, but my best caching days have been when I have managed to plan a really good circular walk to take in several caches - the walking as a fun as the caching. Geocaching is such a wide activity that it caters for all kinds of approaches - and none of them can claim the moral high ground, as though there was a 'purist' approach to geocaching. Quote
+kewfriend Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I'm fearsomely competitive so ... (1) If someone's on my tail I move the cache 50 feet (2) I log every locationaless I can find (3) I let down the tyres of geocars and leave spikes in the road (4) I set caches in the middle of nowhere with unsolvable clues ( psst why hasn't anyone picked up the EU geocoin from Boa Trace ) (5) I send FewKinder into the nettles to save myself getting stung and then she's so p*ssed off she wont log her find (6) I leave broken 'Golden Arches' toys to persuade kiddies this game aint worht it (7) Other people's TBs go straight to the grave yard (8) I delete logs ( other people's ) .......... ok the rest another time ....... And you thought we did this for fun - GET A LIFE Quote
+Mr'D Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 psst why hasn't anyone picked up the EU geocoin from Boa Trace Ain't there - nicked it already! Quote

dpoet Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I already had a gpsr for hill walking. found out about Geocaching and combined the two. I tend to plan a walk with a cache in it. but have not had time lately, after starting a new job. I don't really bother about numbers, but as i get more time i will probably log a lot more finds. I think competition is important, and fun Quote

+Bekandian Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 We already had a GPS as we do a lot of walking, but were introduced to the idea of caching by a good friend of ours, Julian (GadgetManUK). Fitted us perfectly as we now get to see loads of places we would have otherwise not known about, get out walking and have some fun whilst we're at it. Plus we've made some really good friends in the process Quote
+Alibags Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 Actually, on a sincere note (when you can fake that you really are onto a winner! ) , I really think that BEST fun I have had when caching, be it numbers or super duper quality caches is doing it in the company of friends. One or two joint caching trips have had me literally crying with laughter! Quote
+zensunni Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 One or two joint caching trips have had me literally crying with laughter! Us too. Even last November thigh deep in cold flood water we had a great time, a great laugh and more importantly great company. Anne & Ken Quote
+Sensei TSKC Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 It's definitely the fun aspect that draws me to this sport / pastime / hobby. I do agree with what others have posted in relation to a bit of competitiveness does/can add to it whether it's your own goals, numbers or just beating others to caches. Caching with others can be great fun though. Thoroughly enjoy it. Oss! Quote

+Tupperware Hunters Posted November 19, 2005 Posted November 19, 2005 if you are a serious type you have cacher of the month if it is a bit of fun you have (time away from the other half) and a reason to rib your taller OLDER mate in your local fun for me Quote
Da Rubber Chicken Posted November 19, 2005 Posted November 19, 2005 Stuck between serious and a bit of fun so lets just say it's Seriously Fun Quote

nobby.nobbs Posted November 19, 2005 Posted November 19, 2005 i only go for ftf 's to save everyone else the angst of the attempt and race so a public service not for personal pleasure! not that there are many times i get to try as not many round here. competative? nope not guilty, purely doing it for a dadgum good excuse for a walk. so i do it for pleasure and health reasons. when istarted i had trouble walking far, now i'm not exactly running marathons but i can do the bigger hills. Deego Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 (edited) Its all fun I have been sitting at 396 for 2 weeks and there are 5 unfound caches with in 10 miles of my house. But when I feel like caching I will get them. As others have said, I also enjoy caching with others and had some of the best days out when in the company of others. I have caches that are not very far away from me and have been there for a while. Eventualy I will do them and enjoy doing them. After all it is a hobbie Quote
+thewallys Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 We are serious about having fun, and caching is serious fun. We love to cache, that's why we do it, no other reason. We cache a lot, we like getting TBs and FTFs but it's because of the hunt and the game, not the numbers. Quote
+Daisy&me Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 I'm just determined to have more fun than anyone else! Quote
+Roving Rangies Posted November 23, 2005 Author Posted November 23, 2005 It seems not many actually cache! They just come to Groundspeak to post instead. Just as I thought! Quote
NickPick Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 It's cold out there, and we have to work aswell. OK strictly speaking, Groundspeak forums don't count as work, but I have to look like I'm working Quote
+Skippy and Pingu Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Did it for fun to begin with, then Phoenix made it personal for the FTFs. So we beat him a few times, then got bored of it and went back to doing it for fun!! Quote
