The Herd Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 I was wondering...(hope this makes sense!) Is there a maximum distance that two stages of a multi can be placed? Quote
Teamhawaii1981 & blueicyrose Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 I don't believe there is; someone last month was mentioning how they placed a 90 mile multi, then forgot to mark the final stage...I'm sure there are longer ones. One thing to keep in mind however is the traffic the cache will get. It might push the log frequency down; but if you don't mind that, that is all that matter! Quote
The Herd Posted November 17, 2005 Author Posted November 17, 2005 We are actually just thinking of doing something around town to take cachers to interesting places. There is by no means an overabundance of urban micros here, so thought this would be a neat way to get them seen and enjoyed! Quote
Moose Mob Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 Probably about 12,500 miles. That would be half way around the planet. Anything longer, and it would be shorter to go the other way. But, no there is no guideline as to the maximum distance. There is a practical maximum, and that would be the distance a person is willing to travel to complete the cache. Quote

hukilaulau Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 Just yesterday I was imagining the next person who buys a ride to the space station being a geocacher. Cache maintenance would be expensive though! Quote
Quiggle Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 Thanks for the fast replies...got some work to do tomorrow! While the stages of your multi have no guideline for the separation from the other stages of that multi, they do need to be 528' or more from any other cache, or any stage of another nearby multi. Hope that helps! Quote
wimseyguy Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 Peace Arch is a multi with stages in two countries. There is also a link to a trans-Atlantic cache on the cache page. Of course there is an easier way to complete the stages. Spread them out as much as you see fit, just remember that if it gets a reputation for requiring a lot of unecessary driving, it may not get looked for as often. But if the hide are great, then that doesn't matter as much. Quote

TheAlabamaRambler Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 There is, in fact, a practical maximum distance - the distance and area that the owner can or will get to each stage for cache maintenence. On rare occassions you can have a cache or stage that's far from home and in an area you don't often go to, but then a local-to-that-stage cache maintainer has to agree to service it for you. I personally think you should be able and willing to get to every stage or cache within two weeks of notice that it needs maintenance, with the exception of seasonal-access caches. Fortunately for most cachers I think the reviewers are more lenient! Why not make a spread-out multi into a series, where each stage is a cache that contains partial coords to a bonus cache. You have to do all the caches to get all the coords for the bonus cache, but you can do all but the bonus as a stand-alone cache if that's your choice. Have fun, Ed Quote
