Mngca Geocoin Sales

The Minnesota Geocaching Association is proud to announce the presales of the MnGCA Geocoin.

The MnGCA Geocoin design concept was developed by a committee of organization members and voted upon by the membership at large. The Geocoin Committee is currently working with USCoin Force to render the concept in a final coin friendly art design.

Final%20Coin1.jpg

In the mean time we are opening up presales of the coin to the membership and to the geocaching community. So what do you need to know?

The design of the coin is intended to reflect the organization and the Minnesota geocacher. The coin will be approximately 1.5 inches in diameter made of a shiny silver base and have enamel coloring. The front side of the coin will depict the Minnesota Geocachers Association logo (state outline, pine trees, and Geocache) and will include the tag lines of “Minnesota Geocaching Association” and the web address www.mngca.org. Each coin will be serialized on this side. The back side of the coin is intended for periodic redesign. The first edition coin will depict a winter woods scene and a set of foot prints leading off into the woods. The tag lines for this side are “No GPS Needed…” and “Just Follow the Tracks!”

Cost: $7.00 per coin (includes shipping)

Shipping: United States Postal Service (1st Class Mail)

Insurance: Optional (Fixed Price Based Upon Quantity)

1-7 Coins - $1.30

7-14 Coins - $2.20

15-21 Coins - $3.20

Payment Methods: Paypal, Check, Money Order, Cash

Serialization Policy: This policy was developed based upon guidance from the MnGCA board.

1. MnGCA members will receive first priority.

2. Buyers with Minnesota mailing addresses will receive second priority.

3. All other buyers.

This policy applies to the first coin order by each buyer. Mass orders will receive one coin that complies with the above policy and the remainder of the order will be filed after all orders receive their first serialized coin.

Timeline: The prepay period currently is set to run through the end of the year (December 31st). If the minimum order of 300 coins is achieved and the funds are received then the committee will place the order the first week of January 2006. It is expected that it will take 6 to 8 weeks for the coins to be struck and shipped to the Geocoin Committee. As soon as they are received and inventoried they will be shipped to you. Based upon this timeline we expect to ship by March 15, 2006.

Those interested in purchasing a coin may follow the link below to the sales page.

If you prefer to place your order by mail we will accept checks or money orders. Please down load the Minnesota Geocoin Order Form at the link below.

Just paypaled for 3.

Why wait till January to place the order though? You should be at 300 coins sold before tomorrow morning.  Any possibility of placing the order earlier, like December 1st?

First page of This thread, Pg5

Well from what I can decipher, you're not making these gc.com trackable. So you wouldn't have to order 1500 min at all. In addition, I believe the requirement for purchasing tracking numbers for an organization (or state) has been reduced to 1000 now.

Nothing I read explains why you would wait 7 weeks before putting the coins into production when by tomorrow I would guess from gc.com forum sales alone you should have approx. $2400 (not including shipping) or more in sales (that's saying you sell 400 coins by tomorrow, and that's quite likely).

So can anyone answer my original question (sans links please)?

Maam

Being we were a small organization we didn't have the capital to up front the costs of tracking and such. Because we had no guarantee on the number of sales. As far as waiting. Again, we set a goal for presales within the organization. Your right we could order tomorrow. But what about someone who doesn't see the link until next week. Since we don't have capital to order hunderds of extra coins for future sales. This was the option we came up with. A 45 day sales period followed by manufacture of all coins ordered.

To be quite honest, we would have loved to have the funds to 1) front the funding for trackable coins and 2) front several hundred or a thousand coins for later sales. But we don't have the money.

In the end this is what we came up with.

Do I need to pay right now or is it safe to wait a bit... i.e. is there a maximum number of coins being produced?

I'm just asking cuzz we've run out of money with all of these coins coming out so I need to get the account restocked.

No you have time. LIke it says we are preselling the coins unti 30 December. You can order at any time up to that point. As I posted above we have no limit. We will make as many coins as ordered. A few of us may go in for a hundred or so extras for some post sales period late ones but for now. If you order between now and 30 Dec you will be good to go.

Arcticabn,

Thanks for the reply. I understand your position, but remember you're taking money from people for something you won't deliver on for nearly 4 months. That's an incredibly long time.

I am not familiar with the coin vendor you've chosen, but typically you can produce the dies and run half the order right away and then do a reorder for several hundred more later. It doesn't effect the price per coin if you reached the minimum number of coins that factored into the $6 pricing to begin with. I do it with my personal coin all the time. I cannot afford to run 500 coins at once (as an example), but I can afford 150 or 200 at a time.

Reorders with many coin vendors take only 2 weeks (cause the dies exist already). So it wouldn't take very long to get the second batch in (again assuming this vendor you've chosen is as responsive as the top 3 to 5 most of us in this forum are familiar with). I'm also surprised at the 7 week turn around time on your order regardless. Many of the coin companies used by geocachers turn orders around in 3 weeks (or less) from the date of final art approval.

Just some info for you FWIW.

I guess this is one of the downsides of working in a committee in an organization. To bad nobody stepped to the plate to take the reigns on getting gc tracking and the custom icon.....heck I'd be willing to fund that myself but I missed the boat on the MnGCA coin design committee. March is a very long time to wait! :drama:

I gotta agree with AtlantaGal and PassingWind's comments. If you're pre-selling coins you will have plenty of money to pay for tracking and the cost of the coins. Heck, you have $14 of my money.

Being we were a small organization
I don't think the size of the association matters... Delaware has a coin coming out, for example.

All, we the committee appreciate all of the advice. We really do. But we are going to stick with our plan of attack. We have already been working with our selected vendor and are comfortable with our process. Yes we realize 4 months is a long time. But not everyone is so connected to get their orders in on the first day.

We developed this coin first and foremost for the members of the MnGCA followed by Minnesota Geocacher. Though I understand what you are saying, it's taken us over 6 months just to get to the point of presales. We plan to take the lessons learned from this project and apply them toward coin development in the future. I will check with the vendor about split ordering to see if we can gain the same price breaks as with a single order.

But our bottom line is that we are reaching out to the cachers in this state and it takes time.

Link to comment
I do like the idea of taking care of cachers in your home area, though. But I wish your committee would rethink about splitting the order.

I read through much of the threads linked early on in this sale thread. The bottom line is geocachers as a whole are paying in advance so their local cachers can take their time and get this coin also. We're funding this coin production by prepaying. Otherwise, the MnCGA wouldn't be able to produce a coin at all. In the threads they said local interest was at 31 people.

###

For the record, tracking doesn't matter to me. BUT, if these were trackable, you would sell more easily, probably double.

If the coin vendor will allow the order to be split and paid for in two installments, then it would be best for ALL people who buy this coin. First, the people who are funding the coin would receive their coins in a more timely manner. And second, those that are hard to communicate with or are slower to respond to the offer would be able to do so by the deadline for the second half of the order. Just keep the original deadline for the second half of the order, and order the first half by 12/1.

Didn't your original discussion say that 500 coins was the break even point at the $6 price? If that's the case then the second half of the order would be where your association would turn it's profit.

So are these cachers computer illiterate or do they hang out in their fish houses way to long? How else can you geocache if you don't get on the computer at least once a week!

With that said, I can understand your position. You have some very active people in your organization and a lot of bench warmers sitting back ready to yell at the umpire....either way someone gets in trouble.

Thanks for your efforts thus far and I'm looking forward to working with MnGCA on the next geocoin!
