rescue557 Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 I could have sworn that I saw what appeared to have been a benchmark in a local mall. Interestingly enough, it was inside. Was this an actual benchmark set by the NGS? Are there indoor marks in existance? Just curious (and confused). Quote

+Dew Crew Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 Hey! There's an indoor benchmark in my area. Not possible to get to since half the mine is flooded and they only give tours of one of the floors. Quote
+bobbarley Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 How about a bench mark on top of a building? Is there any of those? Quote
Papa-Bear-NYC Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 (edited) How about a bench mark on top of a building? Is there any of those? There are scads of horizontal control marks on roofs of buildings. When I seacrh for them I usually log them only if the building is gone. Then I log it as "destroyed" on GC (see KU3038 "WASHBURN 1932") or "not found, presumed destroyed" in NGS (followed by an email with pictures or other documentation) to Deb. If the building is there, I don't bother to log it. in this day and age I have little chance of being allowed on the roof of the building. In addition there are intersection stations (flag poles, cupulas, etc. on top of buildings) which are probably not what you meant. Papa Bear Edited November 20, 2005 by Papa-Bear-NYC Quote
+bobbarley Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 Thanks PB I am in Canada I I got ahold of some Benchmarks here and one was listed ontop of a building. I wanted to know if that was unusual. Quote
+Black Dog Trackers Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 It is unusual. Maybe 1 in 300. Quote
Papa-Bear-NYC Posted November 21, 2005 Posted November 21, 2005 (edited) It is unusual. Maybe 1 in 300. I would guess the proportion is a bit higher higher in cities like New York. A quick check for Manhattan which I have on a spread sheet shows about 1:100. I got these: (there may be more) KU3600 KU3934 KU4038 KU3585 KU4002 KU4005 KU4012 KU3911 KU3912 KU3993 KU4008 KU3972 KV4394 KV4395 KV4449 KV4373 KV4375 KU3928 KU0871 KU3958 KU3933 KU3913 KU4029 Check out KU4029 It'sa chiseled cross on a balcony of a high school. I'm used to seeing chiseled crosses (and squares and "T"s) as bench marks (elevation control points) not horizontal control points up on top of a building. Cool. I have no idea if it's still there. I'm working my way through Manhattan (about half done) but I haven't got up there yet. Edited November 21, 2005 by Papa-Bear-NYC Quote
kgbinmo Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 I saw a benchmark in side the rest area building in Iowa On I 80 West bound from Illinois. First rest area in the state. In the floor of the main visitors building. I do not know if in the data base. Quote
+seventhings Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 kgbinmo - I did a radial search on N41-35.850 W090-28.750 in both the Geoaching and NGS databases, and there are no registered marks within 1.8 miles. Found the coordinates using Microsoft Streets (very cheap, surprisingly good & functional software). Good eyes, though. Will Quote
+Harry Dolphin Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Indoor benchmarks. Hmmm... We were wandering about in Wayne, Passaic County, NJ today, looking for easy caches and benchmarks on a cold day, and saw the page for this one: KV3435. Inside the fire company, near the trophy case. Unfortunately, no one was there to ask if we could look for it. Quote
