When The Cache Appears To Be Missing...

My topic was about players who go to a cache site, do not find the cache, and drop another without ever having talked to the owner first. Their intentions are irrelevant. They did not find the cache, so it should be logged as a DNF. There is no option in the drop-down box for REWARD. However, my main point is that it is terribly presumptuous of someone to do that.

We replace missing caches quite often around here - did it twice last Saturday. In both cases we knew the owner, called from the cache site, assured ourselves the cache was missing, and replaced it with spares we carry. Yep. logged 'em as finds.

It's a fairly common practice around here - when owners drop out or move away their caches often become "community-maintained". I know of several where there's been no locatable owner for years...if we find it wet, depleted or missing we clean it, replinish it or replace it, log it and the game goes on.

Wow. I feel really blessed to live in an area where the hiders generally put a lot of personal energy into their caches and cache containers. It would never occur to me to replace a well-hidden, custom-made, camoflaged container with a cheap ziplock tub. So what if the cache is temporarily disabled while the OWNER checks on it's status after a few folks log DNFs? Local caches are continually disabled and enabled.

I personally take the words "owned items" at the top of my stats page seriously. Those are my caches. They are my responsibility and reflect a bit of who I am. While I would certainly appreciate a log indicating that the muggled remains of my cache were tucked into a ziplock tub for safekeeping until I can replace the container, I would consider a dropped container litter. Period.

As for the business of interpreting the word "find": I hate it when a driver who clearly has the right of way stops to wave me through an intersection, holding up traffic out of "kindness". If they followed the established rules of the road, confusion would be reduced and we'd all still get where we're going. In the same spirit...a find is a find. A reward is a Twinkie. Obviously the numbers are worth getting worked up over, since there's so much math going into the relevant posts. "Find" means find. Anything else is a DNF. That's how the game is played.

Games without rules are performance art. Ick.

OP...I've not seen any evidence of this happening in my area, but then, I've been at this less than a year. We tend to be pretty protective of our lovely PNW, so this sort of deliberate littering would be a bit shocking. I'm sure if it does happen, the locals will all assume the culprit was a visitor from California. :D
