Don't know as a Yank that I'm even so welcome here. (I can recite most of "Lock, Stock" and "Snatch" by heart - won me points with the good UK Army guys in Baghdad!!)

 

However, I was lucky enough to get an extra Isle of Man coin on that sale last night, and would be happy to trade for a UK coin if anyone is interested... :smile:

Funny thing is, I was in the Navy many years ago, stationed aboard the USS Ranger (an aircraft carrier). The sister ship to the Ranger was the USS Kitty Hawk, stationed in San Diego for many a year. :mad:

'Newbie' questions, sorry...

 

I've found a few Geocoins in caches, and have my own UK coins. Sorry for being thick, but other than that I'm new to this Geocoin business - are they all manufactured by the same company? Is there a website that lists them all?

 

And more importantly, is there a Dorset Geocoin?!

 

These most likely seem silly questions, but I don't have a clue!

Not sure if there is a Dorset coin - I'd be interested if there is one though. This topic has a lot of info about coin minters and other coin related info.

I wouldn't want that for my coin. I'd want it to blow with the wind and travel the world. Am I being naive? Are you coin hounds just going to jump on it, keep it, sell / trade it?

 

If not (after all, there are some coins in circulation, but only a few mind - just 8 within 20 miles of my home co-ords at the moment), is there a preferred manufacturer / designer of coins for the UK caching community?

for a personal coin it will cost about $450 - $500 for 50 coins - gc trackable but no icon. This is a minimum order

 

For a personal coin with icon you would need to spend about $1400 minimum numbers 250

 

So unless you are really flush or want to collect coins then this is an expensive game.

 

I had 500 made and have sold some and traded some, and released some but I collect these coins :laughing:

 

If you want just a single coin you'd be best buying a single trackable coin - I believe there are best of british available still from studlyone see above or maybe lancashire or yorkshire. Also there will be event coins available from the shrops weekend and if all else fails drop me a mail, I have a few spares of various coins we can probably sort you one for cost

Very good advice from Jan and the Percey Boys. It can be an expensive game minting your own coins and its only if you do a largish batch that you can keep the costs down.

 

Get in touch if you want any info about doing it - I'm more than happy to share lessons learnt from making mine.

 

Some coins do very well with travelling but some people tend to think that they are just too "shiny" and spirit them away - its just one of therisks you face releasing coins into the wild. One option if you want to seed a special geocache is to get some wooden nickels donw - they work out a lot cheaper than metal coins.

Thanks to all those who have emailed me with info about the coins. I have a 'best of british' on order and have seen a pirate one i like! now about a cumbria coin. I understand that there aren't any at the moment :ph34r: . is there any one who is in a position to make one as i would love to have one. Also as i am a very keen paddler I was wondering if any one knows of a coin devoted to canoeing/kayaking. iv'e seen biking ones but not one for us paddlers. if there aren't any is anyone in a position to have some made???????

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone tell me if its possible to deactivate and remove a GC icon from your profile if you own it? If this is impossible as I think it probably is, does anybody know if a GC given up for adoption removes the icon from your profile or does it stay there permenently?

I'm not sure if it can be deactivated, but it can be transferred/adopted. If you send an email along with the pre-requisit voucher for a pint/glass of red I'm sure it will be sorted, it certainly was for me anyway.

 

That reminds me I think I still owe someone a pint :)

I have used two different companies for my coins. I have made both trackable and non trackables.

 

If you want coins to track or coins to trade will dictate your choices.

 

So to track a coin you need to make 250 coins - about $800 plus $375 for tracking and $150 for icon about $1350

 

The other option is to get a sponsorship type deal but this will limit your trading i.e. get 500 made and get a company to sell 250 for you

 

If purely for trade you can make just a 100 about $450 but you will not be able to sell on forum

about icons - if you adopt the coin out you lose the icon unless you have moved that coin first when it will stay in your moved list to the left

 

about mints:

 

I have recently been throught the whole shebang and been given the ULTIMATE link to the MOTHER MINT

I don't know of any UK companies that mint geocoins but I can persoanlly vouch for oakcoins they did a good job on my coin and the service was great.

Personal v. generic collecting is a taste thing - but if it's not trackable the numismatically correct term for the item if it isn't personal is a "medallion" - for instance drunners untrackable Loreley coin is sold as a medallion but listed as a gecoin so we can find it. Non cachers will also purchse medallions. well they'll also buy geocoins proper especially if they are sterling silver!

I suppose it is a question of what mkes a coin a Geocoin. There is mothing to attach your design to geocaching other than its trackability. It is an easy way to attach it to the sport/hobby/obsession by making attached to you - which you obviously have by using your avatar as an icon
