Shame you never put your name on it hence making a personal coin

someone else said that they would be interested in trading only if it were a personal coin. what is this thing with having your name on the coin? am i missing something

I suppose it is a question of what mkes a coin a Geocoin. There is mothing to attach your design to geocaching other than its trackability. It is an easy way to attach it to the sport/hobby/obsession by making attached to you - which you obviously have by using your avatar as an icon

thats fair enough. we decided the coin looked cleaner without having our names on it but we are planning a personal coin in the future so watch this space

HayLin won an Around the World In 80 Caches geocoin at the Hogmanay Hangout event. It has turned out that the coin is 1 of 8 original proof coins, and is a collectors piece.

As this particular coin isn't trackable on GC.com she has donated it to go towards my fund raising page.

I have now listed the coin on ebay and I am hoping that collectors will bid a nice high sum for it?

If you are interested then please bid, or if you know any collectors that don't frequent the forums then please pass this message along to them.

What a pity this wasn't discovered before the event, in which case it could have been sold on Ebay for the purpose it was donated, i.e. fundraising for the Scottish Spinal Injuries Charity in Billy Twiggers name!

I think a number of people donated coins in the belief that their value would have been maximised ...

I FULLY believe that their values where maximised. We raised well over £200 at the event alone. I also believe that a raffle would probably have raised less than £100 and an auction would have dried up before everything went.

To my knowledge you are the only person to air such a grievance, and this is the first I have known anyone has had a problem with how we raised money using the donations?? I am willing to be proved wrong on this of course!

For the record, I have asked avroair's permission to sell the coin on in this way, and I have his full support. Also the current owner which is HayLin has kindly donated it towards my fundraising event.

Please, let's not get into a wrangle over this. Everyone has been very generous, and everyone has made efforts to raise funds for charity. A lot of money has been raised. There was a lot of organisation to do for the Hogmanay event - and those who had to organise the fund raising activities really didn't get a chance to socialise at the event as they were kept permanently busy!

It will really detract from the goodwill and the spirit of things if people start to argue about how things were done.

You are quite right. Sorry!

In my opinion, I made it quite clear how funds were being raised on the event notes. If anything was misleading I apologise. The money raised at the event went to the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southern General, money donated online went to Spinal Injuries Scotland. I'm sorry if this wasn't clear. Overall we raised £1300 between the two charities so thanks for everyone who donating anything!

I totally applaud the actions taken by the Edinburgh cachers to raise money for the Spinal Injuries unit helping Billy Twigger, however I can see where some people may have reservations.

The individuals and companies involved in donating the coins/TB tags/membership/GPS etc, all did so in the knowledge that they were supporting the spinal injuries unit. Looking at the prizes donated, it would not be unreasonable to put an e-bay value of £400-500 on the items before taking into account any particularly rare coins.

According to the cache page the tombola raised £140 out of a total of £228 which was a fair amount of money for a group of 30ish caching teams to raise

Perhaps for a future fundraiser the tombola or raffle organisers should maybe look more fully at how they can raise the maximum amount of money for their cause?

May I also take a moment to congratulate HayLin for her thoughtfulness and wish HaggisHunter all the best in the challenge he has set himself

This is fair enough as regards a future event, but in relation to the recent event it's really missing the point. From the start it was clear to those who donated that it would be for a raffle/tombola, and not by raising money on ebay. It was never about raising the maximum amount of money from selling each of the items that were donated.

I'd like people to consider what this kind of discussion will do for Ewan and his family. So far, they have been bouyed up by the positive responses that they have read on the geocaching community forum. How are they going to feel about people getting into disagreements about this fundraising event??

I, for one, am never going to get involved in a fundraising event, as it's guaranteed that someone somewhere won't like what I decide to. Rather than applaud what the event organisers have done (as Team Clova have done), there has been criticism. That's appalling, in my view.

I've been looking into this 'personal coins' business - this is not the first time I've thought about it, I posted on this thread a while ago. However, now I'm hooked to coin collecting (you know who you are! :D ) I'm thinking about it again and with the exchange rate as it is at present, it doesn't seen as expensive as I first thought it might.

I have a plethora of questions (ooh, big word!) - would anyone who has had their own coin made be willing to help me out? Should I post them here, or email individuals?

One general question - can you have anything you like on your coins (providing it is not copyright or 'unsuitable' of course)? Are the coins for individual counties made by anyone in particular, or could I make a Dorset coin? If I did this, would I be treading on the toes of any of you veteran coin-type people?

I'm completely new to the world of producing my own Geocoin and I was wondering what advice some of the more experienced have. Are there any pitfalls to consider (e.g. customs) and any recommended mints?

The coin I hope to produce is a personal one which will be based on the following graphics:

front.pngback.png

I'm hoping it'll be a shaped coin in the outline of the graphic. The text & stuff on the back isn't fixed yet but that's the general outline of what I propose.
