Goofed off all day in a delightful way ... Sandy and I went

to Santa Ana to see the Warriors, Tombs, and Temples exhibit

at the Bowers Museum and Gallery. A rare chance to see

examples of the tera cotta warriors, horses, animals, and

all sorts of related artifacts from the earliest Chinese

dynasties. On exhibit for a limited time at the Bowers.

Warriors, Tombs, and Temples

I've had the good fortune to visit the tomb of Qin Shi Huang Di on two occasions so I can vouch for just how amazing these artifacts are.

(Too bad Santa Ana's such a long way away, though. Otherwise, I'd go see this exhibit...)

Mr. Harmon, you shouldn't have taunted Miss Jodi........ I'm just say'in.

Happy_fun_ball.jpg

John,

Hmm, I heard that Jodi fell into a stream today so there's

some chance that she's too damp to retaliate. Seems to me

that as her husband you should have hoisted her gently over

that little-bitty stream; you know, as the officer and

gentleman that you once were and surely so remain.

Just for the record sweet Jodi has already let me have it

for her little aquatic adventure by way of log entries on

Sweetwater and Saddleback trails.

So c'mon John, towel th' ol' gal off and serve a glass of

wine to her ... this too will pass.

Deeply troubled,

James,

There's no keeping up with you ... that's 5,000 warriors for

you and two warriors for me; not counting the small ones,

the animals, the jewelery, and the other fabulous artifacts.

Even so the exhibit is worth seeing ... and the delicious

lunch at the adjoining restaurant was terrific.

Rainy day improvements in the brand-new SD Rowdies website.

Added pages to feature the Yrium collector cards; a page for

each of the several sets.

Much to do before this site is acceptable. Assuming a wet

winter one can hope for significant progress. Must track

down the cause for spinners instead of thumbnails on the

gallery pages. At present they go away after using either

the right or left next-set buttons. Submitted a support

ticket but no answer as yet.

SD Rowdies Website: Version 0.0.1.4

It seems that the spinner problem might be related only to

the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer. For the most part

the spinners don't show up when using the 32-bit browser,

and then when rarely a spinner does appear it immediately

resolves into the expected thumbnail image. That's a good

thang.

Had good response from the host-site technical support

team ... advising that it might be a browser issue, thus

passing the ball back to me.

Going to look into the 64-bit browser issue ... maybe

some useful add-on is present on the 32-bit version but

not on the 64-bit version. Good chance to drill into the

Microsoft Knowledge-Base website.

Of course I know that you few Geocachers that check this

Forum thread now and then would be thrilled to know of

the progress I'm having with the SD Rowdies website.

Will be interested to hear from others with regard to

the presence of persistant spinners that appear on the

photo gallery pages of the SD Rowdies website. Also

wouldn't mind receiving suggestions on further uses for

the website.

Jim,

From what I can gather Denice has some sort of built-in

ray-gun that shoots smiles onto the face of everybody

she meets. A day on the trail with that sweet lady almost

latched me into a endless-loop smile-mode. If that happens

again it will ruin the grumpy old curmudgeon image that

I've worked so hard to perfect and maintain here on this

Forum thread.

Still, there's work to do along the many trails and fire

roads of Cuyamaca rancho State Park. Sure would be a

shame to leave things unfinished out your way.

Fact is that I'm dealing with the problem of having enough

containers ... been thinking that I'll have to start going

door-to-door in senior communities to beg for prescription

bottles. Might have t' get a part-time job too, just to cover

the cost of cammo' duct-tape and FTF dollars.

Clodhoppers duct-taped

There's a certain ol' gal with cornsilk hair that shall

remain nameless doesn't think much of my years-old

$40.00 bargain boots, always and often referring to

them with a sneer as Harmon's "Clodhoppers."

Forestalling an impending breakdown in a right and

proper way one can see that the restorative power of

duct-tape has instilled new life into my most cherished

footwear.

Here, by the way, is an anagram for the name of that

ol' gal that casts frequent aspersions at my faithful

"clodhoppers."

Anagram: jinea

Awesome, Harmon!! Great site to showcase the Yrium cards!!!

Tom,

Whew! I've been hoping that you would approve of the

Yrium-card images being online like that.

Been out on the Blue Ribbon Trail and the South

Boundary Fire Road I see. How surprised I was one day

while driving up to the SBFR parking area Denice of

Kwvers! ran onto Highway 79 and threw herself down

on the pavement so's I would stop and pick her up.

At first I figured that she had a fatal-attraction for me

but it didn't work out that way. ... fact is that she was

just trying to talk me out of putting more hides up that

way.

Another small step forward, added a photo gallery with photos

that will be needed once I write and post a procedural paper

with instructions for editing the long-description field of a

cache page so that it presents a photo as well as text.

As is the photos in the new gallery suggest the steps needed

for the task; however, it's pretty hard to read the HTML

snippet that must be added to the end of the long description

field. Of course one can right-click and save the photos so

that they can be enlarged for readability.

Well, shoot, below is the snippet of HTML code that's needed.

Trick is that the photos must first be uploaded to the cache

page gallery and then the URL of the photo must be copied and

then pasted between the double-quote marks of the HTML

snippet. Shazam! ... end of story.

<br /><br />

<center><img src=""></center>

<br /><br />

I'll work on the procedural paper, shouldn't take long to post

it. Might produce it in PDF format including the needed photos.

If so then the photo gallery might not be needed.

Of course it's true that the essential steps are already posted

on the Geocaching.com website, without procedural photos.

Could be that I'm just waisting time but I've got some time to

waste so not a problem for me.

So my question is whether or not there an interest in this

material? Many Geocachers already know how this task is done

and I can imagine that there won't be much interest otherwise.

Hey! one person learns how to do it and does it, I'm a happy

man.

Worse case is that I'm spending some quality time with my new

website tools. Beats th' heck out of having to commute five

days a week or more. Snark!

So it goes,

Repositioned thumbnails for Yrium-card pages.

Very nice addition, can hardly wait for the next "pillow inspired" addition

Thanks pals ... yes my pillow whispered to me during

the wee hours once again with the following result.

Version 0.3.1.1

For one thing I reordered the Yrium's-Pals cards into

ascending order. They were scrambled in the previous

versions. Sloppy work I say.

This edition includes a new "Photo PDF" button on the

home page that enables a viewer to view, to print, or

to save a procedural document describing how to place

a photo into a cache-page desription field.

Of course I have no expectation that local Geocachers

have a need for the procedure. Mostly I prepared the

document because Joe of Map4Nav' once asked me how

to post an image on a cache page.

That leaves me with one very modest hope, that one

person will learn from the procedure, will actually

accomplish the task, and will let me know where to

see and admire their result.

Otherwise I am making good progress with the

development tools for the SD Rowdies website. I see

that it's past midnight and so I must go to bed and

hope that my pillow will whisper to me once again,

another inspiration to improve this work in progress.

Dang, you rascal, you caught me at it. I meant to sneak

those "spashul" misprints onto the website once the usual

of thang. So maybe ... just maybe ... who can tell?

By the way I do intend to post new images at the front

end of the photo galleries so that a viewer doesn 't

have to plod through aimlessly looking for new stuff.

Yeah, sure, like anybody would do such a thing.

What I've learned from your remark, James, is that at

Here's th' thang ...

During my first Merigan Fire Road outing I surveyed

the stream-crossing at Sweetwater Creek and realized

that if I were to placed new hides on Saddleback Trail

then the usual suspects would rush out to score them

as finds and would have to cross the stream twice.

I plead my case, in what way could I have resisted

such ripe temptation?

Well of course I did return to set bait. So far the

payoff is that five of the usual suspects have ladled

water from the stream with their hiking boots and

soaked up the self-same water with their socks and

pant legs, a case wherein my imagination has been

gleefully rewarded by an uncommon reality.

(Hee-hee snark!)

Problem is that an addiction set in and I find that I

am hypnotized by the idea of placing hides all along

the fire-roads and trails of Cuyamaca Rancho State

Park. One might ask "Why is that a problem?" To which

I reply "If placed 0.15 mile apart then it takes seven

containers per mile." With several miles of trail left

to cover I'm faced with a need for something like fifty

containers.

Result is that I've gone over to the dark side of

Geocaching as evidenced by the fact that I have placed

an order for bulk shipment of amber plastic jars with

black lids. It seems that I've joined the ranks of the

critically obsessed Geocache hiders ... but not nearly

as far gone to my addiction as some people I could

name that actually bought a separate outbuilding for

their stock of Geocache containers.

Uniformity vs. Trash Picking

Three day delivery and a day of logsheets and pencils

and then I'll be the new me that my pillow has always

urged me to be. Open trails, soon I come!

Note to Self: Hmm, a new pillow is probably cheaper than the jars.

One of the neat things about Basket Bush and Poison Oak is that both are from the sumac family and they often grow in conjunction with each other. So you could say to yourself, "That plant is sessile (has no petiole), therefore, I'm safe." while not realizing that the next leaf over has just set you up for a date with the calamine lotion bottle...

Here's a nice example of poison oak and basket bush growing together. It also provides a clear picture of the differences between the leaves. The exercise for the viewer is to determine, based on Harmon's description, what is Leaf A and what is Leaf B?

Well done James. The Basket Bush I saw in Horsethief Canyon

was indeed growing right amongst a clump of Poison Oak, all

entwined as if on the same plant. The simple approach is to

treat either plant as harmful ... unless, of course, you want

to gather material for "Indian" baskets. (Leaves of three?

Let it be!)

More rare even yet are the plants you see in the photos James

posted here. He is too modest to have mentioned this. Those

plants are the alphabet-soup varieties of Poison Oak and

Basket Bush. As a boy I had the delightful experience of

encountering such a plant with adjoining leaves that spelled

out my full name. Depending upon the particular variety of

alphabet-soup Poison Oak and Basket Bush one will find that

typographical styles differ from plant to plant.

It was a playful habit of native Americans to weave naughty

words and phrases into their basket designs by including a few

well-placed leaves from alphabet-soup variety of Basket Bush.

This practice was little known until late 19th century when an

archeologist from Northern Arizona University (Go Lumberjacks!)

realized that the naughty words and phrases weren't written in

the English language. So it goes.

No wait, lemme see ... a one-L lama is a beast ... a two-L

Llama is a priest; is that right? I get so confused.

On the other hand if four of my hiking gal-pals will bear my

sedan chair and Janie will come along with the palm-frond

fan then I'll forego the beast of burden.

Blame this on BlondHiLites ... please. Of course 3CDs isn't without a

measure of blame as any right-thinking person can see from Denise's

photo. Do keep in mind that I'm but a mere pawn in this sort of thing.

So it goes.

C. I didn't take that photo.

D. I haven't met nor even seen th' lovely Lois.

E. She's in good company.

F. Besides, it don't look big, do it?.
