Y' see th' weirdest things along th' trails nowadays.

You know ... mirror-wise.

I know what my New Year's resolution is going to be! No more being nice to Harmon....he's been getting away with too much!

OBTW...next time John wants to fix the pee-trap in the only bathroom of my parents 100(+) year old house 30 minutes before we leave for the airport stop him! Yes he broke the old pipes and we had to leave the mess for my brother to finish....and now they have no sink!!!!!!!!

John doing plumbing? He hasn't enough B/C for a plumber for gosh sakes.

Nice work John, mess up the plumbing in your mother-in-law's house.

That should pay dividends for a long time to come.

Jodi, so you were away for the holiday were you? I worried that I might

have actually ticked you off ... what with no response from you. Sure

wouldn't want to start a new year with you truly mad at me.

Kiss-kiss,

Sweet ol' Harmon

my hills alive with the sound of music shot. Ain't

You know, besides her DTCMMBLB shot.

Splashette ... kiss-kiss for your birthday.

Thanks so much my pal! That was one of our more epic hikes, something about Nuns everywhere!

You always make things look so much better, I really like the matching frame.

I had a great day, thanks to so many thoughtful friends!

'Tis you that always makes things look bright and happy.

How lucky we are to have you amongst our Geocaching

Hmmm...well I don't know but I could swear I've seen that frame somewhere before...

Well done James, surprising to me because I personally eye-droppered

the red color from Janie's tee in the image.

Dang, wish I had thought of the Etch-A-Sketch idea before you beat me

to it. Darned good idea for an Yrium-card layout, maybe Sue has the

wrong guy doing card layouts. Before I give up I'd need to see if you

can Photoshop convincing shadows of all sorts into images.

Is that Flagman's bridge on the way to the pollywog rescue? scary....

Yes, once was but was soon stolen for lumber. Should have been a

travel bug it seems. Somewhere there's a home-repair project that

has an "SD Rowdies" signature on the end of one of the boards.

The bike that Denise rides is actually located in North Park with a

micro hidden under the saddle.

000206B5.gif Great job Harmon, animation in a photo ,only you could do that

Thanks pal, ... looks strange doesn't it? Of course

Photoshop CS5 Extended makes it easy once you

know how. Figured that James was a proper target

for the first Cinemagraph post.

Note the rythm of the fangers ... diddle, dee, diddle,

dee, diddle-dee-dee! Some sort of Scottish drinkin'

song ... surely "The March across Auld Brig o' Doon."

The really funny thing is ... that wiggly hand doesn't

actually belong to James, rather to me. Imagine my

hand playing James's pipes and him in a skirt!

Diddle, dee, diddle, dee, diddle-dee-dee!"

Note to Self: Can't wait until James goes off about my "skirt" remark.

Yes, strange. Almost creepy in fact. I shudder to think of the possibilities. "What could possibly go wrong???" he says as he ponders what happened when Harmon discovered the use of symmetry in images (scroll back a couple years on this thread...) If only we could count on Harmon using his super-powers solely for good...

Probably the great Neil Gow's "Fareweel to Whisky" followed by his later tune, "Welcome, Whisky, Back Again"

Note to Self: Can't wait until James goes off about my "skirt" remark.

When you've worn a kilt as much as I have, you learn that it's just not worth the effort to go off every time someone makes some remark about wearing a skirt. Far easier to let it slide and take comfort from the fact that there's a lot of women who think men in kilts are sexy. :anibad:

On the other hand I do have greater things in mind for this

cinemagram technique. This preview is but an intermediate

step toward the grand plan that my pillow whispered to me

last night. More to follow indeed!

Congratulations to the eight whacky GeoPals that were,

permit me to say, photographically victimized in the

interest of this experiment.

Before anybody asks ... you really don't want to learn

how this caper was pulled off. Just know that my pillow

and the Extended version of Photoshop CS5 were critical

stepping stones along the way.

Before you say it ... yes, it's stoopid but it wasn't easy.

Do keep in mind that I'm seven and seventy.

However, a beneficial side effect of the experiment is

that I worked out a simplified method for uploading and

posting images directly onto on a new-cache page before

the page is activated. Just imagine what the trick might

lead to. So there!

Bwah-hah-hah!

Mission accomplished!

Finally figured out how to crawl under the Groundspeak

uploaded-image resizing barrier to place a cinemagraph

onto a cache page.

If you had asked me, I could have told you that there is a 125KB file size limit. Stay below that and the image will not resize. I have always posted my images larger than the standard size. :P

Gotcha ... but this is a different issue wherein the posting

process converts GIF files into single-frame JPEG files; and

so, no animation.

An uploaded image, regardless of size or resolution, is

actually stored and kept on the Groundspeak server. What

is posted to a cache page is actually a derived image rather

like a thumbnail-image; whether resized or not. My finding

is that the URL for the image that appears on a web page can

easily be altered so that it refers to the uploaded image.

It was the breakthrough that enabled me to post a large GIF

image of LLOT's flying fangers right onto a cache page.

So in my case ... a GIF image was uploaded but what was

posted was a small JPEG version of the large GIF image

that I uploaded. By altering the URL for the posted JPEG

image I gained access to the stored GIF image. Same

approach works for resized images. Maybe nobody cares but

I was stoked when I pulled it off.

Now, to make use of this finding an extra step is needed to

place an uploaded image directly into a cache-description

field. Once the new-cache form is completed and before the

new cache is activated then one must edit the description

field in order to alter the URL so that it refers to the

uploaded image rather than to the derived image.

There's another important aspect of this process. Before

the "Activate Listing" option was added to the process one

had to post the photo somewhere else on the Internet so

that a URL could be taken for use in the description field.

Now one can upload the intended photo as a gallery image

right onto the new-cache page before activation. Once there

one can re-edit the listing to copy the URL of the derived

photo, paste it into the usual snippet of HTML code for the

cache-description field, alter the URL as mentioned above

in this article, check the HTML check-box, resubmit, and

finally Activate the listing. Two birds with one stone, and

as far as seeing an animated GIF image on a cache page

please keep in mind ... you saw it here first.

Hey, is anybody getting this?

So you have been uploading low-resolution images have you?

That explains why Lisa is alway prettier than you are in your

photos. She has an abundance of beauty and so her image can

tolerate resizing whereas in your case the loss of a few pixels

is not what I would generally think of as a good thang.

Thanks for caring,

Harmon

Thanks for your support pals. Maybe I'll spend some time to

work up an authentic SD Rowdies Website. Oddly enough I had

one until Cox Communications removed web-space without

reducing charges. Had quite a tussel over that ... destroying

intellectual property with no regard for the damages it caused

is malicious I say. On the other hand I suppose it's possible

for them to know that the phrase "intellectual property" and

I don't go together.

So while I was fiddling with LLOT's fangers I took the step to

purchase some web space on a Server in the U.K. Side effect

is that once in a while I call in a phony customer-service

request just to have a conversation with a delightful British

lady and her lucious British accent. Rule Britannia!

First step was to whip up the example you see above. Kind of

like that layout because it offers fairly large images.

This is great, now I have at least three, maybe four, Geocachers

to blame for any consequences that befall me for responding to

their encouragement. Also I called one of those help-desk Brit'

babes to talk over this matter ... if I knew how to write a

British accent I'd quote what she said to me. It was a heart

warming conversation by the way; only lower.

In the meanwhile I've roughed out a placeholder for an eventual

SD Rowdies website as a means to try out the tools I've gathered

for the effort.

Don't expect much from the alpha-test version ... just wanted to

make sure that the three or four followers that comprise my base

constituancy have some encouragement, as meager as it is. Try

the link that follows. ("... base constituancy ...," I got that from

BBC News by the way.)

Note: For now just use the Back-Button for returning to home page.

Well, looks like the tools and procedures are more or less on track.

So now I have not only an alpha-test SD Rowdies website hosted on

a British server but also a bevy of Brit' help-desk babes to talk

things over with. Of course I know very well that she has to pretend

to like me as part of her job but, for Gawd's sake, just leave me

Seems to be working fine for me... at least while using Chrome under Vista HP.

Good response and really clean images.

However, I still get vertigo from looking at some of them... however the ones of the ladies compensate for that.

Now I have to go think about shovelling another foot of snow today with a big storm coming in tomorrow as well.

Only -29C today so far. It should warm up after tonight (wed) and get back to balmy 0 to -10 highs for the weekend.

At least the snow is very light, just deep for now, I've been keeping up and pushing it back to the edges by hand. I don't have to do anything where I live... but I keep digging out the SAR building so we can go out if needed. Got behind when the big plow broke down. That was only 10 inches or so, except for the big berm left by the plow after it's first pass and before it broke elsewhere.

Now fixed and we have had it mostly plowed by them again. Got our Wilderness Classic dog sled races this weekend, good timing for once, we'll have snow and better temperatures.

One last thing... the monitor deterioration here stopped apparently (maybe temporary) I can work around the big black bit across the screen while I save for a new monitor... at least it still works mostly... and the things are not that expensive either... my first Sony EGA in 86 cost more than this whole system did. That 286 was the most expensive I've ever bought, over 3500 canadian, on the other hand it only recently passed on... or at least the hard drive did, and it isn't compatible with the new styles... RIP.

Ain't he th' sweetest thang?

Wow! my ship has finally come in what with my core

constituancy swelling to seven followers. Might have

to hire a staff member to handle customer support ...

probably a Brit' babe I'm thinkin'.

One of the things I must add to the photo-show is

accreditation ... the lost-child image is a classic

from James of LLOT. One of my favorites by the way.

As far as performance of the server I did note this

morning that scrolling between images wasn't all that

smooth but seemed fine at other times. Got to

investigate the bandwidth allocation issue, might be

served as a costly topping on basic service. So far

toppings have raced ahead of basic service, cost-wise.

Might have t' find a night-job for my sweet bride.

After all, what's the purpose of a host site? ... to

make money of course. Always toppings with an order;

however, there's a free customer-support line so it

doesn't cost me a thing to chat with that lucious

Brit' babe that picks up. Got to dial-back on the

number of chats per day it seems ... I sense that

she's starting to get a tad harpy with me. Probably

talkin' to other fellas when I'm off line. Begs the

question ... can true love be found over a customer

support line?

So it goes,

RIP.

Hi Doug,

Just so you don't feel bad do know that San Diego had about

0.02 inch of rain this week. Not to worry, I was able to

pull out of our driveway without much trouble after the rain.

We've been watching the progress of that big snowstorm. Mother

Nature is p'oed it seems ... she's been trying to teach us a

lesson this past year. Sandy and I got a dose in Virginia a few

weeks ago when we had to drive through a small hurricane that

dropped large trees around us along the I-95 near Frederiksburg.

My gosh, dog-sled races ... that's got to be a fabulous outing.

Post photos for sure.

Smart of you to adjust to your failing computer monitor. Funny

what we can put up with if we adopt a good attitude ... just

put a strip of duct tape on the screen to cover the black strip.

Hiding it with duct tape will keep you from noticing the black

strip and has the further advantage that you can write notes and

symbols on the duct tape with a felt marker pen.

If the cost of a new monitor is holding you back then get a

night job for your sweet bride. (We can compare notes after we

see how that idea goes down with our sweet brides.)

Life is good,

Harmon

Now it works I do have high speed internet access. Just didn't work this morning for some reason0002020B.gif

I've got my fingers crossed that the Brit' host server

is reliable. Of course if it turns out that I have to

go over there and slap somebody it won't be so bad.

Come to think of it SD Rowdies will be Geocaching in

Ireland and in Scotland later this year so with luck I

can motor down to meet that lucious help-desk lady

with the fabulous Brit' accent and perhaps, shall we

say, get hosted.

The test site works for us, now if you can just record that british accent lady and add it to the website I am sure your site hits will sky rocket. Of course you do know they do accent-training for helpdesk workers in Mumbai, so if you don't find her in England, another SD Rowdies trip may be called for.

core constituants? Hmm, a room at the Taj Mahal Hotel ...

let me get back to you on that idea.

SD Rowdies website Version 0.0.0.1

Right now I'm in the earliest phase of acquainting myself with the

many features of a brand-new website development-and-support

suite. At this point it's all about familiarization with the primitive

development tools and publication features. As you see I've taken

a few baby steps but have very-much more to do before being able

to produce a professional result. This will take A while.

"I hear ... I forget. I see ... I remember. I do ... I understand."

My thought was that my core constituancy of ten followers might

enjoy watching me work my way through this exercise. Right now

you'll see that I'm experimenting with a few of the many photo-

gallery designs offered in the development suite.

I'm glad to say that the lucious help-desk babe with the Brit'-

accent is maintaining her affectation of concern for my honest

endeavor.

If I may offer a thought on this matter, I prefer designs that offer the opportunity to view an array of thumbnails. Sometimes I have the time and inclination to click through an entire slide-show, but I do not always have the time nor the inclination. Having an array of thumbnails to peruse gives me the opportunity to see things that I might have otherwise overlooked.

P.S. I'm not sure that Marko (a.k.a. CPRG) would take kindly to being a "Banner Queen". No sense in stirring things up first rattle out of the box.

James,

Thanks pal ... both points are spot on; however, that

dig at CPRG was always intended as a joke. Truth is

it never drew a response so I'll take your advise for

sure.

I've been torn between thumbnail layouts and slide-show

layouts. Thinking it over my impulse was to shoot for

a layout that offered the largest images but now I not

only get your point but quite agree with it.

At present I'm just learning what the development suite

has to ofer rather than trying to produce a final layout.

Still, next issue I'll splash a thumbnail layout for

consideration.

So much to do and so little time to do it, this is

cutting in on my Kindle time. By the way, Team Fatman

checked in with an email suggestion so now my core

constituancy has swelled to eleven followers. Woohoo!

Version 0.0.1.3

Goofed off all day in a delightful way ... Sandy and I went

to Santa Ana to see the Warriors, Tombs, and Temples exhibit

at the Bowers Museum and Gallery. A rare chance to see

examples of the tera cotta warriors, horses, animals, and

all sorts of related artifacts from the earliest Chinese

dynasties. On exhibit for a limited time at the Bowers.

Warriors, Tombs, and Temples

Took a few minutes after returning home to incorporate the

suggestions made by LLOT and Team Fatman.
