Beware of strangers bearing gifts ...

What's wrong with this picture? - or - Cox ... your friend in the digital age.

Can you say "DOCSIS 3.0?" It's coming your way.

Crap! That's going to kill streaming movies from Netflix.

My speed is still OK for the time being...

217bac3b-9835-422e-89f9-3a59449b44f8.jpg

No lie ... streaming videos would run only six seconds before reloading for ten

seconds, on and on..

Story goes like this ... one day a UPS carton showed up at my front door. Inside

was a Motorola SB5101 cable modem and a letter. Said ""Your existing modem

will be incompatible with our service on August 31st ." Provided was a replacement

modem, no charge. Installed it and lost 72% of my download and upload speed,

totally unworkable.

Turned out that the modem sent to me was second-hand and already had an

assigned MAC address. Down where I come from we've got a name for goods like

that.

Time passed, ... time passed, ... second carton arrived at my front door today.

Result as follows.

ebfcdd2d-ca57-43f0-8a04-1bc8093afa16.jpg

Now I'm steamed because Trailgators one-upped my download speed. Thanks a lot

fella, I was going to feel better. Maybe you pay extra for more speed?

Underlying issue is that Cox is heading toward DOCSIS 3.0 so all old DOCSIS 1.0

modems have to go bye-bye. If any of you encounter this then make sure to call

the Cox technical guys at 1-888-556-1193 so that they can verify and validate the

HFC MAC address that's on the nameplate under the modem.

Make sure you don't use the email support address, nothing but a summer-intern

call-center with a generic troubleshooting list; as in, "Is the power cable plugged

into the wall outlet?" or "Do you have to go to the bathroom?"

Nope, I don't pay extra. If I did the premium service would supposedly give me 30M down, but that's peak and they guarantee nada. There are some nights that the speed drastically drops for no apparent reason and I have to call them. I agree about the poor support but they must be an equal opportunity employer because they obviously hire the people that put the round peg in the square hole.

Harmon, I live off the 15. You know what they say "Some like it hot!" :)

If I were you I would complain or least least tell Cox you should pay the fee for what you are actually getting. The basic Cox plan is 1.5M down, the normal one is 15M down and the premium one is 30M down.

Yeah well, I asked three times now for them to reimburse me for

the two months of bad service while trying to get them to resolve

the modem issue. No response from them whatsoever. Maybe

English is just their second or third language.

Of all my carefully composed problem statments sent to them, not

once did I receive a reply that gave me the slightest assurance that

somebody read my messages; much less understood them.

I'm bundling a package of my unanswered emails and sending the

bundle to the Cox mojo-man. Maybe his staff will let a few of my

remarks leak-through to their boss ... should give him a few laughs

during cocktails.

Hey, thanks for sharing. Also received results from FisnJack by way of email.

Here's my improved result.

b22b9b7c-fae7-4eea-b8a6-f11c578062a7.jpg

Gives me a chance to do a wrapup on my situation which, as

you can see above, is much improved.

At one point during my bout with Cox over the cable modems

I took my laptop and the first modem out onto my driveway

and connected directly to the streetside cable so's to definitely

counter any argument about splitters, household cable, Ethernet

wiring, and router. That confirmed the same 0.84 download and

0.29 upload speed.

Once the second cable modem arrived and was installed, same

poor result. Called Cox once again and went through the same

elimination process with the surprising result that my Linksys

router was faulty. My bad not rechecking that possibility once

I had the second cable modem installed.

As you can see from my post above I'm back in business as

expected. There are three levels offered by Cox ... Essential

at 1.5 Mb/s download, Preferred at 15 Mb/s, and Premier at

30 Mb/s. With cable modem and router problems behind me

speed tests range between 14 and 19 Mb/s as expected.

Back to being a happy-camper for Internet access ... for all

those high resolution photos and videos in my life of Photoshop

usage and tutoring. Nothing like beariing down on a problem

that took over two months to resolve. What really spoiled me

was working at Sandy Creek Ranch where we had a T-1 line

and a 30-mile line-of-sight wireless access point.

The heart of the cable-modem swapout is that if your cable

modem is only good for DOCSIS 1.0 then it will have to be

swapped out as Cox embraces DOCSIS 3.0.

This problem first came up with the increased type and number

of DTCMMBLB images I've had to handle. ... putting some strain

on my broad band service if y' know what I mean.

FisnJack is learning to post images on Forum threads.

So far my instructions haven't paid off for him but he's

real close. Might be a case of too much information.

Worst case I'll drive down to his place and spank him

until he's got it figured out.

A spanking, a spanking, there's going to be a spanking tonight!!!!!

...and after the spanking.... the Oral Sex!!

I tend to agree. I rode in the FJ this morning up the Pine Creek road (with John driving) and had the opportunity to test those floorboards for myself...

Harmon, my neighbor is an engineer at Motorola and he just gave me a Motorola SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0, Wireless-N WPS Modem/Router to try out. Sweet! Here are my updated speed test results:

Best Buy sells the SBG6580 for about $150. Wireless-N is nice because that gives me 300M on my local network for DLNA streaming. Now that I have Wireless-N, I might get one of these. :)

Harmon, my neighbor is an engineer at Motorola and he just gave me a Motorola SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0, Wireless-N WPS Modem/Router to try out. Sweet! Here are my updated speed test results:

a9d3c44e-569d-41d8-8587-3bfa73b552fb.jpg

Best Buy sells the SBG6580 for about $150. Wireless-N is nice because that gives me 300M on my local network for DLNA streaming. Now that I have Wireless-N, I might get one of these. :)

Pat,

Don't return it! No, wait, tell him you lost it and then ask him

to loan you another one so's I can have one too. Guess I'll

have to Photoshop my SpeedTest report to get ahead of you.

What router are you using?

Sure feels better now that those problems are behind me. As

it was watching six seconds of streaming video followed by

ten seconds of a spinner, over and over again, wasn't a lot of

fun. Made it too miserable to watch the Adobe tutorials when

Photoshop CS5 was released.

During off-hours I'm seeing up to low twenties and then down

between 14 Mb/s and 19 Mb/s during peak hours. I can live with

that but now I'm encouraged to consider buying an SBG6580.

Amazon offers it at $99.95 with free shipping.

Thanks pal,

Harmon

Hmm, would be fun if other county Geocachers would run a network

speedtest and post results and mention their general area of the county.

Maybe not, it'll just make me feel worse won't it?

Hey, thanks for sharing. Also received results from FisnJack by way of email.

Here's my improved result.

Jodi,

Great, here's the URL to run a network speed test.

Speedtest.net

What comes up is a map with a star-spinner.

14048fa7-4356-4eae-8e84-c7273c23c0f0.jpg

Hover your cursor near the spinner until you see

a popup list, then click San Diego. That will start

the speed test ... three things ... ping, download,

and then upload speed test. At the end it will

display a results window. Because you live out in th'

sticks maybe Chula Vista is your ISP, just try both.

Yeah, you and the TXHooligans are right ... all those

images on our critter thread take some patience.

Wow! Tyler, Texas in Smith County... all them Smiths

and roses. My momma was a Smith and she married

a Smith so I was born a purebred Smith. Didn't have

a birth certificate so when I became eighteen I had

to got to court and pay $140.00 for an official name

and by then I was using my stepdad's last name. No

wonder I'm always confused.

Holy Mackerel! ... 0.66 Mb/s download speed, you call that a result?

Make it seem better, call it 660 Kb/s. Honestly, I feel your pain.

Here's Plan A:

When you are holdin' the tin can up to your computer make sure

that you keep th' strang taught; otherwise your bits will be all

mushy. Mushy bits are a bad thang, technically-speaking wise.

Plan B:

This plan depends on you having an actual telephone line. If so

use the "Check Availability" button at the link below to see if

AT&T DSL Internet service is an option for you. If no phone line

then maybe AT&T DSL Direct.

AT&T DSL Service

Plan C:

Shoot girl, you live right under a mountain that has antennas sprouting

from th' summit. Have John run a coax up top and patch into one of the

Internet systems.

Plan D:

Next time John deploys pack up and go with him. Shoot, the've got decent

Internet service on th' boat.

:P Harmon...Plan A and C are the only feasible ones because those results were AT&T DSL !! [:0] John's ship can't even get GC.com since they started adding so many advertisements to the pages. I tried Plan A and it works ok since I only type with one hand so I can hold the tin can with the other. Plan C has me interested: How many feet of cable do you think it would take? Trouble is the rabbits eat everything out here unless it's buried so I bet that cable wouldn't last long . Do you think we could hold an event and get some help stringing that cable? Rumor has it there's a cache at the top..or very close to it.

Can you imagine what life would be like if Jodi had good internet?

Harmon, do you think Jodi is still waiting for the results from her speed test? It's been a few hours now.... :D:D

Pat...you are too Funny...but I don't have SNAGIT so how do I show you my results...which I don't think are good....

Jodi, my ol' heart goes out to you. I had no idea that you and

John were so seriously deprived. So how in the world are you

able to send me hi-res photos so often? Must have a lifetime

Starbuck visitor pass.

Well of course a work-party event, you know I'll be there. As far

as cable-length goes ...

27f6d6f2-5277-47e6-9c89-a2daecf6cd20.jpg

Crow-flies is 1.75 miles so double that t' 3.5 miles for th' ups and

downs; well, just th' ups and ups. Best be safe and buy a 5-mile

spool 'cause you'll get a price-break on that. Make it easy on

everybody and order fiber-optical cable.

What with all the fiber to Cat-5 converters and such you should be

able to hold th' cost down to $6,543.21. Here's th' way it will work,

I'll drive up to the summit pullin' one end of the cable along behind

my truck while John walks along th' cable run t' dress it up so's it

follows th' contours of th' mountain.

Did I mention mulch? Have John cover th' cable-run with mulch.

Let me know when y' got thangs ready t' go.

You're welcome,

Sweet ol' Harmon

Note t' Self: You cain't get good stuff like this on Facebook.

You can download a free program here that works as well, if not better than SNAGIT: http://ffextensionguru.wordpress.com/2007/...no-longer-free/

Use the link for version 5.3 which is free.

Plan E: IP Over Avian Carriers (IPoAC)

IP are the Internet Protocols and Avian Carriers are birds (specifically Carrier Pigeons). The round-trip packet times are probably not going to be great, but the raw bandwidth of a few carrier pigeons outfitted with microSD memory cards is at least 25 times the speed DSL or 5-10 times the speed of CableModem.

Data errors due to coyote might be a problem but that can be addressed by using redundant birds (those of us in the telecom industry would call it "carrier diversity").

Frankly, I'm surprised that Harmon didn't think of this...

Why I oughta ....

IPoAC ... birds is birds ... ain't that what Twitter is all about?

So data-rate expressed as Mb/s would be Mega Birds per second, yes?

Sounds like a new spin on Cloud Computing ... how would you feel

about Flock Computing?

Hey Jodi, James may be onto something here. Lemme see, fifty pounds

of bird seed from the feedstore and a back yard full of pigeon coops

and you're good t' go.

Thank goodness for small favors, now Jodi will be hanging them danged

Bison tubes on pigeons rather than in trees, bushes, and shrubs.

Free at last!
