+PassingWind
FYI....for you benchmark hunting guru's out there. Have a look at November's GeoCoin Club coin !! It's even trackable on GC.com http://www.geocoinclub.com/gallery.php Quote Link to comment
foxtrot_xray
Is there a semi-description on what the heck these are? The site doesn't really ''define'' what to use them for. (I mean, are they placed in places to be found, or do you carry one around..?) I'd be interested in getting one of November's designs, just to have, y'know. Quote Link to comment
ArtMan
Like most collectibles, the geocoin appears to be a revenue enhancement program for those who sell this product. -ArtMan- Quote Link to comment
+PassingWind
It's a travel bug !! Just like any Geocoin you would find in a cache and log on GC.com Quote Link to comment
+gnbrotz
Kind of looks like the old Columbia music club....the supposed 'savings' are offset by the fact that I have to buy more than I really want to. If I could get just the benchmarking coin.....maybe. Making me sign up for a 'membership'.....DEFINITELY NOT. Quote Link to comment
+PFF
It's a travel bug !! Just like any Geocoin you would find in a cache and log on GC.com The benchmark paperweights and pins are cool objects. We can display/wear them. However, during the recovery of over 400 benchmarks, I have yet to see a place to hide a coin. Moreover, since twenty to forty years can pass between visits to a benchmark (see table below), I don't think I'll live long enough to see a coin move even once! I'll pass on this offer, thanks. -Paul- Results from a search on October 4, 2005: FY0270. Monumented 1918. Last visit 1978. Currently missing/destroyed. FY0267. Monumented 1918. Last visit 1985. Now leaning to north. FY0269. Monumented 1918. Last visit 1978, after a Not Found in 1970. Found okay. FY1734. Monumented 1978. No recoveries till yesterday. And (tah DAH!) FY0176. Monumented 1932. Last visit 1934. Successfully recovered by GEOCAC yesterday! Quote Link to comment
+Rick618
They are sold as Travel bugs, but many people buy them just to collect. The TB option raises the collecabilty. The cost is about double what it takes to produce, most seem to run in the $5 range. Some even log thier travels to various caches with a TB, don't think that works for the benchmarks. This group is hitting a niche market and making a few dollars as well. Quote Link to comment
+4leafclover
can you buy them without being a member of the "club"? Quote Link to comment
+GEO*Trailblazer 1
can you buy them without being a member of the "club"? No, I just sent an e-mail to the designer of the coin. And he repiled they are only available through the coin club. You can go to their forum and maybe find that someone will trade. I am going to try and get a couple somehow myself. I am working on that now. Quote Link to comment

+Goldfinch593
This Benchmark coin was the reason I joined the Geocoin Club. Mine arrived in the mail last week. It is, most definitely, a very cool coin! And you are right, it's trackable on Geocaching.com. But I will not be placing this coin in any cache. It is a personal geocoin and will travel with me to events and caches. I will invite people I meet along the way to log it, so it's log will be a nice history of events I have attended and people I have met. Amazingly, I heard that these Geocoin Club coins are already selling on Ebay, so I search for the Benchmark coin... and there it is... current asking price... $75.00! Quote Link to comment
StripeMark
Could you post an actual photo of the coin instead of the drawing? thanks! Quote Link to comment
+maggieszoo
Could you post an actual photo of the coin instead of the drawing? I'm sitting here looking at my coin and it looks just like that. It is just a bit smaller than an actual benchmark. Could pass for the real thing, otherwise. Quote Link to comment
+Goldfinch593
I haven't had a chance to take a photo of my own coin, but here's a copy of the photo posted on Ebay: Quote Link to comment

StripeMark
Got my GeoCoin in the mail on Saturday. Pretty cool although smaller than I'd thought it would be. It's the same size as an Eisenhower Dollar. Quote Link to comment
+ODragon
I haven't had a chance to take a photo of my own coin, but here's a copy of the photo posted on Ebay: That photo is wrong... It's not greenish. That very disappointed me as did the color. It's still cool but could have been SO much cooler! Quote Link to comment
+GEO*Trailblazer 1
When did you that recieved the coin sign up? You say you got it This past saturday. Is that next months shipment early? Quote Link to comment
StripeMark
I bought mine on e-bay. For the minimum subscription in the "coin club", it was going to cost $36. There have been a bunch on e-bay in the last week that have been going from $30 to $75. I picked mine up for $38 (it was worth $2 not to worry about subscriptions and other costs). +DeoBog
If you don't care about the tracking feature, you can also get benchmark paperweights from a few web sites such as http://www.mountainclimb.com/ Quote Link to comment
