+chstress53 Posted October 5, 2005 Posted October 5, 2005 (edited) "Ramsar" is the name of a city* in the Caspian Sea region of Iran. It was here that the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands was born during a conference on 2 February 1971. A Ramsar Site is a wetland that has been designated as internationally important according to a set of criteria under the terms of the (Ramsar) Convention on Wetlands, by the Administrative Authority of the Contracting Party state. The Ramsar List had reached 1040 sites in November 2000, 1104 sites in October 2001, 1200 sites in October 2002, and 1317 sites in November 2003. The regional distribution of Ramsar Sites as of Sept 2005 is 1462 locatedd in 6 regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, N. Americca, Oceanic, and the Neotropics. There maybe more coming in Nov. when the the Tri-Annual Convention is held in Uganda. For more info look here http://www.wetlands.org/rsdb/ Edited October 5, 2005 by chstress53
