Team VaxCave
When a pocket query is executed based on distance (say... 25 miles from a point) which method of distance is used, the Pythagorean theorem method or the great circle calculation? Also, does anyone know the algorithm for converting from DD MM.SSS to UTM ? Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
I don't know for certain, but I'm guessing the folks doing such things know the world isn't flat and used great circle math. (They already have that math in other places on the site...) There are a number of resources to answer the second question. One such is: http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/UsefulData/UTMFormulas.HTM Quote Link to comment
Team WorldPeaceTurtle
I could be wrong but I believe topozone.com has a converter for UTM Quote Link to comment

+lindsychris
I think they actaully use the "dull pencil and old piece of string" method Quote Link to comment
+RocketMan
Also, does anyone know the algorithm for converting from DD MM.SSS to UTM ? I really like Fizzymagic's little GeoCalc program. No installation necessary - Just download it and run it. I converts the various types of coordinates and does distance and projection calculations too. RM Quote Link to comment
+The Cheeseheads
Also, does anyone know the algorithm for converting from DD MM.SSS to UTM ? If you only have a couple of points to convert, you could also enter them into your GPSr and them change the units to UTM to convert them. Quote Link to comment
Team VaxCave
Nah, I'm writing a program that figures out specific things. So I need to know HOW to do it rather than have a program that does it for me. Edited September 28, 2005 by Team VaxCave Quote Link to comment
