Gps-v Refresh Rate

I recently lost my Garmin Vista (How does one lose a GPS... At least IT knows where it is).

 

I've still got a GPS-V that I use for driving.

 

When I use the GPS-V for caching (off-road goto), I find that the GPS-V takes a long time to refresh the navigation screen. I keep walking 20-30 feet past the waypoint before the navigation screen updates and tells me the cache is behind me.

 

It's done this since I bought it and is very frustrating. For driving it's OK. For caching, it's getting ready to be thrown in a lake...

 

Has anyone out there noticed this in their GPS-V? Is it the autoroute function that's keeping the V from updating? If so, is there a way to turn it off temporarily?

 

I really loved my Vista. It updated promptly and always (well, usually) got me to the cache location.

 

I'm thinking of replacing it with another Vista or upgrading to a Vista C. I read that the Vista C has autorouting as well. So I'm afraid to spend all that money on a GPS that's slower than my gait.

 

So, I'm asking for information and advice.

No, I don't see this on my V, at least not like you are describing, (and I own a Vista).

 

Maybe a hard reset is in order to put something back to default, then we can discuss specifics.

 

Oh yeah, in terms of auto-routing response time or even map loading time, don't try out the 60/76cs series. (Remeber the turtle and and the hare story?)

no not really

When using your V on a trail I assume your using the 'off-road' route funtction? (the gps would have all kinds of problems using the the fastest or shortest function because it would have to figure out what road you might be one and how to route you back along roads to the cache...)

I'll also assume your putting the gps into normal (vs. battery save) mode? Keeping it in battery save will slow it down a little bit.

 

oh, it also occured to me that your vista would have had an 'electronic compass' which would have keep your compass arrowed pointed the right way even if you stopped... something the V wouldn't do. (if you don't have this so called electronic compass your gps will only be able to give you the correct direction to the cache when your moving).

If you turn off WAAS it will speed up the refresh rate. That's the first thing I'd check.
