cow-girl Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Hi! I accidently discovered this site from an online journal link. I put in my zipcode and was shocked at all the activity within 40 miles of me! I loaded my dog up and off we went to find our first cache sans gps and our second, a virtual. I've gone looking for two more and haven't found them yet but I am determined. Addictive? Naw. I have an artists reception in Chippewa Falls on Sunday. I plan to map out all the caches I can find on the way and plan the reception around the caching. This is so fun! Any suggestions on an affordable gps unit? I live in a very rural area and plan to only use it for this hobby so a gps for dummies would be great. Chris in Wisconsin Quote
+StarBrand Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Garmin eTrex Legend is a great GPS and includes mapping, small size, ease of use, computer cable, WAAS and is rugged. Can be had for about $135 on Amazon. Quote
+Milbank Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Welcome and Congrats! The garmin yellow etrex or the explorist 100 are great little gps units for geocaching and can be had for well under $100 if you shop around online. Have fun and enjoy.. Quote
+New England n00b Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Well, you can a GPS reciever that can do maps, and ones that don't. Obviously, the ones that don't are less expensive - about $100 or less. GPS recievers that do maps are more expensive, but they are great - I am using a Garmin eTrex Legend (blue case) that now goes for about $140. Keep in mind most mapping GPS recievers have limited 'base' maps, and for extra money, you can buy more detailed maps, which I recommend. This will typically add about $100 or so more to the overall cost. Big names? Garmin, Magellan. Names to avoid? Cobra... Welcome to the addiction! Quote
+Airmapper Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Try to get one you can load waypoints into using a computer, entering caches by hand is a pain. Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Go with the Garmin Legend. Also check out www.wi-geocaching.com Quote
cow-girl Posted September 23, 2005 Author Posted September 23, 2005 Go with the Garmin Legend. Also check out www.wi-geocaching.com Thanks all for the suggestions. I've been reading other posts on the subject of GPS and am trying to learn the lingo etc. Guess until I see it I won't know. I appreciate the suggestions as it gives me a spot to start. +Super_Nate Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 I have a Garman Etrex Vista and it works just fine. Seeing you are not addicted an etrex would be great for you. On the other hand, I have found a Magellan to be better for the addicted crowd...those who spend every free minute in the thick woods, and those who hide caches in the thick woods and expect the coords to be bulls-eye! There really is no wrong answer between a Garman and Magellan...just spacifically avoid the Cobra and the Rino. Quote
