One Question For People Who Arent New To This

Yep. But either way, it just makes it a tempting target, if discovered.

good idea or maybe have a key somewhere else in a different cache then they unlock the new one by using the other key or whatever,just an idea :-/

I've found a few where the owner used a bike cablelock, and also a cable with a combination lock and had them cabled to a tree or some other object. Works great.

You would want to put the stash sheet on the outside then to explain what it is to accidental finders.

Maybe you could make it a multi with some of the clues being the combination aswell. Sounds like a cool idea

There are even some multis out there with padlocks, where you get the combo from the other stages.

 

Of course, an evil muggle who wants into your locked cache will just take it home and cut the lock off...

Just yesterday we did a multi-stage, where the third stage was a magnetic key holder with a key inside. The final stage was a fake electrical box with a padlock on it. Very ingenious, we thought!

You can try, but you have to remember that locks only slow people down not stop them. If someone finds your box and wants to steal it/steal whatevers inside a lock isn't going to stop them.

The multi cache with the combo is good. Often I'll just see the blue dot on my GPS as I'm driving by. I'd hate to find it and still have to log a DNF as I have my share of them already.

I would be stymied as It is rare for me to carry such information with me. But the idea is sound. If I was the property manager, however, I would probably not appreciate you padlocking items to the property I was entrusted with. ... if it's your own land, then go for it.

If you're doing it to add a twist to the geocache hunt, its a great idea. If you're doing it to discourage theft it may have the opposite effect.

 

If a non geocacher comes along and finds a geocache, they open it up, see what it is and in many cases return it to its hiding spot. Now if they come along and see a locked box, they are much more likely to wonder what's inside, take it home and get out the hacksaw or sledge hammer.

It would also keep park rangers, local law enforcement, etc - from seeing what is inside - which might make them very nervous. That doesn't make it always a bad idea - I found a cache once that involved a combination lock - it just means that you want to be very careful how and when you do this.

How about this one in Glendale, Az...Yes, it's mine. It's "keyless" because it's a combo lock on an electrical box. Because it's placed on other larger boxes, it blends in nobody seems to question the lock. Only been up for just over a month, but still in great shape.
